Fred's Maps for Era 3

These maps are the culmination of over a decade of graphical work and constant redesign. These two, and a handful of other maps that either aren't up to par with these, or incomplete(as my future campaign), were the motivation for me to even learn to mod game art, which I am now going to college for, because it has become a passion of mine.

I want to personally thank three people, without whom this mod wouldn't have been completed: FanofHeroes, Salamandre, and RerryR.

*This mod isn't compatible with other mods. It is best to add this mod to it's own Era 3 folder.

This mod contains two seperate, Expert XL maps:

1. "Domination", a possible multi-player map where you play as one good/neutral faction against multiple other solo good/neutral factions and a trio of evil factions.

Playable as:

  a. Tower
  b. Rampart
  c. Fortress
  d. Stronghold
  e. Castle

against whichever above faction you didn't choose, plus:

  a. Inferno
  b. Dungeon
  c. Necropolis


2. "The Dark Alliance", a single player map where you play as the aforementioned unified evil factions against the others; who have teamed up against the evil trio.

Playable as:

  a. Inferno, Dungeon, and Necropolis

against the combined forces of:

  a. Castle
  b. Tower
  c. Rampart
  d. Fortress

P.S. As I didn't get anyone to actually test these maps for weaknesses or playability besides myself(whom is not a competitive player, at all), I cannot be blamed for any negative effects on the player. I tried to make the maps somewhat difficult, but not ridiculously difficult. The layout of the terrain and accessibility contained, were primarily to extend the time a player has to play the map; and to help them venture around more. I don't play fast maps, as I don't like them. If I had my way, I would make gargantuan, multi-layered maps that take actual weeks to play. But, I have to work within the current constraints of the game. Hopefully, in the future those constraints will be breached effectively.

P.P.S. I will be updating this mod once all the graphics contained in the pac(not the maps, as it isn't needed) are completed. These graphics aren't in these maps, but will be used in future maps for the campaign I have planned; as well as solo maps for two new factions I have planned. You'll find these incompleted graphics by looking through the pac(they are the uncut terrain patches and some of my future two new faction work placeholders).

edit: updated with the dat(plus script addition) and json files.

edit 2: i received a report of faulty gameplay due to a mod that was still active from the era 3 general release, and i realized i left something out. when installing era 3 into a seperate folder for my maps to run, it is important that ONLY these mods are active/running. the ones not pictured, i removed from the era 3 release:

thanks. check out the mod. lots of nice stuff in there. the dirt road took 3 tries to get to look right(that was years back, one of the oldest things i did).

Amazing work. I particularly like the swamp trees, making swamp even more beautifully garnished then ever. And that brings me to the only negative observation: please, pay more attention to the originally poorer terrains, like Lava.

The screenshots are as amazing as ever. This post might actually make me want to reinstall WoG/ERA again after many years of not playing it. The attention to detail is what I really appreciate the most in maps, and even if it's on a platform I don't really "care about", your maps look like well worth it to check out.

i've done a lot of work on lava terrain patches, so you must mean objects, which i've done minimal actual volcanic work for. that'll be coming in the future. i'll be remaking the homm2 lava mountains, as well as decent amount of underground lava stuff.

@ gnollking: thanks. i hope you check them out, i put a lot of work into them. i'm a detail-freak myself(except when i miss updating an entire screenshot, apparently).

Please, disregard from the previous post anything that is not a big compliment. I misread something and I thought this was an objects path.

cool. hopefully it'll spread out to the russian community and they can have a go at my noob maps.

i expect that, over the time i'm mostly inactive, people will "fix" my maps so that they are more challenging for the bloodthirsty heroes maniacs who eat AI for breakfast. i'm not one of those people; i'm what you could call "a disgusting casual".

and for the rest of the players, we have the Difficulty Mod that allows adjusting the AI smoothly for every level. It will also work for your scenarios.

Amazing work! I've been waiting for your map for so long, fred. I will test them this weekend.

By roughly checking your mod, I improved a few details, including:
1. Optimise the archive. Now the mod is less than 200 MB. You can do it yourself by clicking on this button on your .pac and .snd.

2. Replace .gif with .png as they would result in a crash with HD OpenGL graphic mode.

Download: Google Drive (ppl don't use deposit file in 2021 )

It would be very handy if you could provide a list of frequent-used mods that are incompatible. You know, many players are now using the launcher edition. They don't know much about compatibility. They just download, install and play everything they could find

thanks for the info; i wish i knew to optimize the drive for better compression before... i'm not aware of any gif file in my mod, could you tell me where you found that? or are you saying it's created in the 1st step, and i fix that in the 2nd?

my map mod comes with it's own scripts, which will overwrite or crash with any other scripts. it has to be standalone-installed, or you're going to have crashes.

also, what's wrong with depositfiles? i try to stay away from anything like google, as they farm info like nobody's business, so i give them as less traffic as possible. i boycot lots of places and things for their dirty deeds, and would certainly boycot it all if i had that option.

The problem with DepositFiles is the slow download speed (hardly anyone has a premium account there for fast downloads).

The .gif is from the modified emerald tower script (Mad Scientist). Looks like it is based on an outdated version of the ET but ok.

Just checked your scripts. I don't think it is a script-heavy mod at all. Should be working with most mods IMHO.

One small thing you can improve is the main script. You don't have to write the function FU25003 every time you use it. It needs only one.

we also must disable some WoG options with ERM script. For example in Dominance the option "Neutral Stack Size" cannot be enabled, otherwise, these Monks won't join your army, making that scenario impossible to play.



Please add that line to fred.erm
!#UN:P232/0; Disable Neutral Unit Stack Size Option


Edit: and I agree with Archer here, the mod is not script-heavy. Most things will work. Not saying you should enable other mods.

If you give me a list with WoG options that should be enabled or disabled to properly play the scenarios (most likely the ones you had enabled while testing/developing) we can either make it in script form or save as a settings.dat
