I made a return to Cities Skylines recently just to scratch that city building itch. Have to admit Paradox really knows their stuff, even though you have to throw a lot of money to get that ultimate experience. Never liked their DLC policy.

Gandalf196 said: Loop Hero is the most addictive game in the history of addictive games, maybe ever.
Hah, I've also picked it up, probably becasue of all those articles highlighting how well it sells and it being a Steam hit. So far I'm learning it, becasue it looks like the important part of the whole game is to know when to retreat. The game is not clear enough about some of its mechanics though... so you need to learn by experimenting.
I also recommend Legend of Keepers: an addictive and simple game, I believe it's pretty close to getting out of EA.

Monster Hunter Rise
I wasn't interested in this game (while they literally made a Nintendo Direct focused on it ), but it caught my attention how much hype it was generating and that there are some fun and unique systems like wirebugs and wyvern riding. And the doggo (Palemute) ofc. The decision to buy it took me around half a day. The thing was that I purposely omitted the franchise since my first and last interaction with it, which was MH II on PSP. At that time the game wore me off with how cumbersome and tryhard it was. It felt that bringing down a big monster was tailored specifically for multiplayer. But it seems the franchise evolved much since then. It still feels like a try-hard game, but various additions have lessened the steep learning curve. I think especially the "buddy" system makes the game solo-friendly.
So far I'm pretty enchanted by the game. I'm amazed at how much personality and charm it has (you can pet all your animal friends and even the owl!), and how much you can tailor it around you. You can literally customize everything from facial tattoos to layers of fur on your buddies (it took me 2 hours just to create my team ), create loadouts/shortcuts which give you quick access to your favorite sets, items or even strictly cosmetic things. The game can be overwhelming with how much sub-systems and mechanics it has (skills, jobs and training for pets, gathering items, cooking, crafting) but once you get a hang of it you realize how well it all is inter-connected and accessible (you just need to remember some things) and how many helpful subsystems there are to help you (auto-crafting or restocking). Want to upgrade your armor, but you like the cosmetic look of a particular item then you can use "armor layer" function which doesn't change your armor stats only its look. Making armor creates scraps which you can use to forge armor for your buddies and so on. And there are many other interesting things. It feels like a sandboxy experience actually, there are even "explore" quests which enable you to freely roam and hunt and focus on what you like, using a particular weapon (14 types yikes!) or just gathering stuff.
Ofc, the story is not that big of the deal (though it's the world that actually makes the story in itself), and the prepare-hunt-restock/upgrade rinse and repeat formula might feel tedious, but judging by the popularity of the franchise it never grows old
There is still a lot to learn about the game and I might still face a roadblock (the harder monsters might turn out to be a big challenge), but it really does seem it is a good entry point for a newbie and one of the better timed-exclusives on Switch this year.

After playing through Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 recently in coop with my brother, I'm currently playing through Divine Divinity, which has been amazing so far (lvl 25 right now). It is always so fun to see how much game studios have grown playing through their older games.
Also been playing Classic WoW since release and not planning to stop until the end of Wrath.

Total War Warhammer 2: If you like Total War and Warhammer, I cannot think of a better game for you. There is a LOT of content and it's a ton of fun. But !@#$ the orcs. Seriously. Those guys are the worst.
Warhammer 40,000: Battle Sector: Solid turn-based combat in the 40k universe. I recommend it.

Another cultural victory in Civ 6. Kinda annoying how easy it is to get one.
Huge map, deity and a lot of mods enabled. Little under 500 turns on marathon! I had a great time. I'm gonna disable cultural victory next session. Didn't even get to see the secret techs yet. Never mind that, I didn't even get to build a single GDR! That doesn't sit right with me.
Biggest takeaway from this run though: right now, with all content unlocked plus mods, Civilization 6 is by far the best game in the series. If there was any doubt before the New Frontier pass, it's not completely dispelled from my mind.

I bought Trials of Fire in Early Access, and the game was good then, but there were chamges, additions and balance patches each week. I revisited it, and I have to say it's completely addictive. Absolutely wonderful game for not that much money.
A clear recommendation.

After trying the Diablo 4 beta, I can say that this might be that one project Blizzard didn't screw up in however long. Pleasantly surprised. After reaching the level 25 cap, I only wished I could play more and go higher. There are enough mobs and activities on the map. It looks good aesthetically. The music is classical and very atmospheric.
Now, the comparison everyone's thinking about: PoE. Although they're both hack & slash, there's a world of difference between them. PoE mechanics/skills are at times very obscure and confusing but allows for a wider variety and range of what you can do, whereas D4 wants things to be understood easily at a glance and therefore is more streamlined and limited. This means that build variety in the long run is going to be lacking and that meta builds will probably be one or two maximum for each class in D4. I think they chose this route to make the game more inviting to new players, which is the correct strategy when launching a game. Also, depending on how the post-launch updates go, they might introduce more skills and mechanics and increase the late game variety.
There's much more to say, but that's the biggest takeaway for me. A positive experience overall. Waiting for the release now.
