Mages are very good at siege battles, however, they are too vulnerable. Try to avoid mages against ranged towns, like Haven, Stronghold (Cyclopes) and Necropolis. Well I allways build Golems, when I'm fighting Necropolis, because threr are many units, which can waste you mages in no time...

golemz!

mages are good in all types of battles. in one certain activity -- dieing. except maybe if you fight battles against weak AI groups.

but if you play a multi -- golems! not only are they bigger and badder, they are also mind spell immune and damage spell resistant. means safety from the lighting of chaos (bye-bye mages). means safety from hypnotize or berserk (how about your mages going crazy and poisoning your hero?). means safety from song of peace or terror -- your golems can charge while the mages light up a joint or soil their robes in terror, because any army planning to win an order army is deemed to have some genies or nightmares in it. and last but not least -- golems are the ones to stand and hold the hand of your hero in an hour of harm, to protect and serve. mages could never do that.

Golem Fareva!

Although it may seem convenient to create magi in order to have an extra magician with powerful spells, gold golems are tougher and can become your only front-line creature (I don't use dwarves after making Titans...)
After all, if you later choose genies instead of nagas(which I find a wise choice) you will have a magician-helper which will be stronger than the weak (in terms of hitpoints and melee) magi.
Genies have more srength, more hitpoints and can be your 'Heavy Ranged Attackers' if you're a fan of Order. The Ice Bolt spell is the most important spell, which, when you have a great number of genies, can inflict a great deal of damage (it has reached 5000[!] damage to me)
Golems are mechanical units (with all the ops and cons this includes) that have 50 HP (which is a great amount for a 2nd level unit) and can easily handle a tough battle and a town siege.
So, why spend your time creating magi that will easily vanish with a blow of a group of Venom Spawns or an attack of a bunch of Devils?GOLEMS FAREVAH!

I always choose mages...i agree that in a multi the golems are better...but i,ve always played with mages...cause they can do lots of damage when they are in big quantaty, they are targeted by any other army...so some other creatures are protected.and if you keep them on back row they are more protected, and it makes your battle quicker cause the golems are slow.

Everyone automatically goes for the genie, so you will have your spellcaster troop. Taking magi would mean that you have nothing to defend your troops except for the lowly dwarves, until you get your level 4 creatures.
In the early game, the golem will help you stay alive, while some fast creatures will wipe out your magi before they can do something. The magi spells are quite weak and only get any significance at higher numbers. But if you keep losing your magi, you will have a hard time to build up a proper army. Golems, on the other hand, will stay with you forever.

magi too can be good

though i said magi die too quickly, it could be sometimes useful. thats because these dangerous yet fragile critters are not just inviting, but even obliging the enemy to take care of them first thing in the battle. so if you want to make sure that your genies or dragongolems or whatnot will not be bothered too early, bring magi along -- to divert the attention of the enemy. only problem is that you can use the trick just once...

Well magi can be very useful when you have many of them- they do lots of damage with m,agic fist or poison. But if you have few of them... in this case golems are better. But as i said, magi are also good with their easy spells

I normally choose golems because they are simply much stronger and more powerful than magi - with their 50HP, they have the highest HP of any level 2, plus they deal reasonable damage. However, if I have the need to do some more ranged attack before I get genies, I then choose magi. However, it is to my experience that magi get universially targeted, are very weak defensively and against large armies go down fairly quickly.

Yes, I always choose genies for level 3.

Golems rock!!! I used to love magi when i was new to homm4 because i thought they were like homm2 or 3 magi, but they melt away like ice in the sun too fast. Good hero killer, though. Still, I think you should stick with golems. If you choose magi, don't bring them along in battle until you have about 50 or more.

Golems are cool with their resistances. Slow speed though (like Magi)

Question is if you want to bring them for endfights at all. Splitting genies / Level 4s or bringing one more dispel-casting hero might be much more effective.

So if for some strange reason (playing Dog Days for example) I must bring Order level 2 into endfight, I'd go for the golems.
