Heroes 4, questions and answers
Do you have questions about heroes IV? Or are you someone who knows the game very well and might be able to help less experienced players with their questions? Then this thread is for you!
In this thread, I will gather the most commonly asked questions asked about heroes 4. Please post your questions here (after you've checked if the question isn't answered here yet) and some of us more experienced players will try to find a solution for your problem.
I've divided them into categories to make it easier to search for a specific question in the future. More questions and answers will be added from the top pages of the Lands in the next few weeks.
1. Questions concerning installing, upgrading and patches.
2. Questions about heroes 4 multiplayer features.
*Where can I find the hotseat option?
- The hotseat function isn't located under the multiplayer function. You can find the hotseat option by clicking on the icon you would choose to start a a single player game, then select the hotseat option. Check the little boxes to the left of "Computer" for each extra player you want. They'll turn into "Player 2", "Player 3", and so on. There should already be one checked for the first "Player".
*Error: "DirectPlay failed when attempting to open a listening connection" when I try to play as Host in a TCP/IP game. What to do?
- If you have high speed internet, you have probably encountered a non-static ip that routes you to your server, which in turn gives you a "True IP". If you are giving out the ip that comes up when you load the game. Or you input into your networking neighborhood on windows this could be your problem. To obtain your true IP, type in winipcfg or ipconfig in the run command box in your start menu. For joining games trouble you are probably behind a fire wall, or using a machine without administration access like in a school or cafe or something.
3. Questions about the map editor.
*Is there a zoom in/out feature in the heroes 4 Map Editor?
- No, though that option did exist in the heroes 3 map editor, it is not available in the fourth.
4. Question about the campaigns.
*GS Opposites Attract Scenario 1. How do I get to the fiery island in the SW corner?
- Check out all the Oracles and dig for the ultimate artifact. That can be found in the center of the map, 3-4 steps southeast from the black dragon stack. It is a summon ship scroll. Then get to water and use it!
5. Questions about problems you had while playing. (spells, structures, ...)
*How do I get my army out of a Sanctuary?
- Double clicking on the sanctuary brings up the "Do you wish to leave" option.
*How to cast quicksand?
- Hold down the right mouse button at the spot where you'd like to start. Drag and move around to make the desired path till it stops. If you run the path over obstacles, the path will not work past the obstacle.
*Suddenly the towns have only the garrison army row left, the visiting army row is missing! I cannot move armies out of any of the towns now. What's wrong?
- The maximum number of wandering armies is 8. Put one of the armies into a garrison and you can leave from the town.

Prisons
HI, can anyone tell me if it is possible to move the enemy heroes from one prison to another?
I need that as most of the high level enemy heroes are kept in a town I can not defend well and each time the town is conquered they escape and have to kill them over again.
It would be nice if I can move them in a prison that exists in a safer town.
So, is this possible?
Thanks in advance

No, you can't move them. Once they are imprisoned they stay there until released by someone capturing the town. Your only chance is to let the town be captured, and take another more defensible town. Once you have that, then defeat the prisoner heroes who were released at a point on the map that is closer to the more defendable town than any other.
But anyway, I think it's part of the strategy and fun of the game to have to defend yourself against attacks. Look at it this way: At least your opponent is putting up a fight, despite the poor AI.

Question:
Does the Hitpoints of Sacrificed creatures follow after the combat is over? (Hope you understand what I meant...)

terje, I think that troops that you resurrect using sacrifice, count as permanently resurrected, if that is what you meant. So they stay after the battle.
But you can't sacrifice summoned/raised/animated/illusionary troops. You have to sacrifice other permanent troops. You could use vampiric touch instead in none of your stacks are expendable.
Elemental, mechanical and illusionary targets can't be sacrificed nor reinforced by sacrifice. But both actions work on undead.

I've a question about the hero special class thingys!
Can anyone make a list about them, what is needed and what it does for every ability,I think there was one on h3trio,but I can't find it anymore!
And as I understand, some heroes don't get special class abilities, can anyone tell me which ones exactly?
And does my hero change class if I advance some other skills that should make up another class?

H4 Runner
i made a map but forgot to set it as campaign, and now im half way through making it and really don't feel like going back through and making everything again. I know that H4Runner can copy the whole top side of my map, but I just can't figure it out. If someone would help me with this that'd b real great.

Combat Speed
I've noticed my heroes cannot go above 12 for speed. Is this the limit? Any bugs regarding this in any way?
Thanks.

powerfull heroes of Lich King
Hey Lich King ,
How were you able to build such heroes?
Is that the result of a campaign or a single scenario?
If latter can you mail me the map?
I love to play long games where heroes can grow like that.
Thank you

I believe I'm playing the last map of the Order campaign in the original. I'm going to pay closer attention next time. I think I was using an artifact that was supposed to increase your speed but maybe it was just for stacks and not heroes. I'll also experiment with the haste and other spells that increase speed.
Thanks for the feedback.

Then you might like to play the map I just finished:-}}
Map was downloaded from Map Haven, name is Sunken Empires 1.2. It is a very large map with up to four human players and two computer players.
Because of the map size and a number of trees of knowledge and other skill enhancers, I got my three main characters to be levels 65, 62 and 61. They started out as thief, necromancer and death knight -- but ended up eventually as arch mages all. The level 61 death knight needed only a few more upgrades in necromancy -- but that was a useless skill for him when he was traveling with the necromancer who had GM in that skill for a long time. The other two characters had maxed out every skill they had.
My GM Necromancer was getting 10 vampires per fight. They ended up carrying 2891 vamps and 294 devils, with many more that could have been picked up from the castles far away -- but I did not bother at the end.
The secondary team of order characters were no slouches either with levels in the mid thirties.
Before you start -- use the map editor to look at the home towns of the various possible human players. Blue starts with a particular advantage and you may or may not want to select him -- but it is worth it to be informed ahead of time<G>.
