Are you using it right? With tolerance set to 0, and contiguous set to be on? Magic wand should be able to get rid of just the white. 
Note to Dj - upload images for the contest creatures as bitmaps i.e. bmp files. That way, magic wand is guaranteed to work painlessly.

hey guys, I hope I can still jump in. Here's what I made:
War Unicorn's body, Ancient Behemoth's hump and head, the belly of the Naga's snake part used as the belly and the horn on the head and the harness from the Dread Knight was used to make that spine on the back.
Edit: hehe, forgot to name him, thanks for reminding me. I can't think of anything original right now because I have other things on my head, so I'll go for Infernal Steed.

Dark Knight:
Used Unicorn horn for the weapon, Champion as the 4th creature and used Naga's hair as extra part for horse's tail. No recoloring used.
