I Like ToH Because....

I thought i'd open a new thread, and maybe get some positives up on this board!
We're in our third season in ToH , and on the verge of HoMM4 so i thought what better time and place to reflect on the great things we've been enjoying in ToH so long, and will continue to enjoy thru the future of HoMM!
I for one have enjoyed the great people i've met in the tournament, ToH has given us a means to meet and play people from opposite ends of the earth - people we never would have ever met were it not for toh and heroes
I also think a huge Thank You should go out to Ves, and the volunteers - as well as a huge Congrats!  There are not many people i can think of who could endure as long as Ves has, most people really don't understand the insanity that was ToH in the earlier days  hehe   And its not just sticking it out with Ves, he's constantly looking for ways to improve the site, both in ideas for gameplay but in the way the site looks!
Take a look at the old news and screen shots of what ToH once was - Ves has taught himself to become quite the webmaster, hehe
Anyways, i hope people will reply here, and share why they love ToH and point out more of the great things about our tourney - would be nice reading happy thoughts!

toh cooolll!!!

Hehehehe, any group that would put up with slow bastards like zud and annoying peeps like jb239 or happy-kane cann't be all bad!! Seriously though, one of the things that i've always liked is the sense of community in TOH. We really seem to have built our own little Cyber City for ourselves. Replete with crime and political intrigue!! Yet also like any community, much getting together and working towards common goals. We all want a place where others share many of our same interests, we can connect, interract, and have a good time!! For many of us TOH is one of these places. For the most part, except the affore mentioned group , i really enjoy TOH and hanging out online with other members of the cult!!

p.s. I guess I even like Zud, JB239, and Hapkane. just don't tell anybody else. OK!!? hehehehe

Dedication

I can sum it up in one word; dedication. Pandora touched on it, and I think it's really true. I play so many different games online, but so very few last as long after they are released as H3, and in large part that is due to ToH. There are other tournaments, but zone is the most frequented gathering spot for players, and ToH is the largest ladder on there. It takes alot of dedication on the part of Ves and volunteers to make it work for this long. I've been a member of many other ladders, and this is the only one I am still a member of after this many years. There is so much potential still- all the different ideas people have about things- it's very good to be associated with that.

On a related note, I think bringing something up from another thread will annoy certain people, but ohwell-

I have to agree with Pandora that someone who has a disagreement with the maps or a certain style of play should do something about it rather than whining all the time. Ves is very open to sub-tournamnets or anything that can improve ToH. I've been talking to him awhile about creating a strategy forum or somethin gof that ilk linked to ToH's site and maintained by myself, or other volunteers. I'm not dedicated enough to take away time from my other activities to develop the site, so the idea has languished so far. The point is, anything you don't like you should constructively deal with. There are many options to go about that, you just have to use your mind and consider it for a little while.

the community

I think even in my small part of TOH what a wonderful community of players there are, when i go to the zone and see how many people are playing toh and how well toh has supported heroes for tournaments.  Most important to me though is how huge the player photo page is!!  Where else do u find REAL people's photos for a online gamers  community and such witty comments?

After reading all the recent posts it is good to see a more positive one, and partly related to others is 1 thing why I think TOH has been great, and its Variety. There have been sub tournies, etc that have catered to all players. Not everyone is the same, and this goes for maps too. TOH has such great diversity and variety that it can go this long and longer w/o becoming boring.

If someone has the initiative, dedication and motivation there is the option for anyone to create a sub tourney off of TOH too, so those who want a great idea put to work, go for it. Its the players that make TOH with the help of Vesuvius and Volunteers

Good idea.

I have waxed long and hard about some things I'd like to see added to ToH so let me also be reminded of some of the things I love.

I love automation.

I love knowing if I report and someone doesn't it goes up on the board.

I love seeing my rank change everyday.

I love Deth_8, Dargon, ZX9, Reanimator, Starknight, Adin, Pandora, Salamandre, Frank, Amazon King, BlackMagikDuck, Jarviss, Prometheus, Maxym, Vulture and tons of others who play in ToH.

I love the fact that we have this board to discuss ideas on.

I love the fact that no style of play is outlawed except cheating.

Most of all I love that Rob has stuck it out all this time because I know it hasn't always been easy.

I will always seek improvement in anything I do in life including ToH. To me when someone seeks improvement it is a way of showing that love.

Well, just got one word for TOH. Companionship

Guess thats the mainreason I still hang around here, besides the gaming offcourse

I mean to talk to guys like Maxym, Franen and Titan about all and nothing really makes the long hours of waiting worthwhile. And guess Im missing a whole bunch of other ppl who are great to talk to aswell.

And this is all because a mad dentist somewhere in the States decided to make a hell of a tournament, for a helluva game
Guess Im just awed by the magnitude and proportion TOH has taken. So thx TOH, and more important thx Ves ( Damn now Im talking like a commercial)

Ok Ok Ok, I won't snow :)

I like TOH because over the last 2 1/2 seasons I have made a lot of new "friends" that share a common sickness...I mean interest in this great game. I have always been able to find a great game and quality players of heroes at just about any time I have wanted 24/7.  The Special tournaments are great fun, and The automation has been a blessing for the high frequency of updates. (and for the volunteers I am sure) you used to hear all kinds of whiners in the zone snowin about "when are they gonna update the site"  I sincerely thank Ves, Melissa, Deth and all the volunteers past and present for their efforts so I can play this game I love so much. Now all I need is a girl like Melissa, Pandora,  LB, ...wait scratch that, then I would have to get another computer and internet connection. or heaven forbid have to share mine. and then they would want us to spend quality time outside of heroes and that would also cut into my gaming.

Cohesiveness of the structure as a whole, its very well organized (order, not chaos). Friendliness of the people involved (for the most part). The feeling of self improvement, ie the ladder system etc etc. Hell it must be good, look at how many people play compared to other leagues

Toh is a wonderful tourney all together, mucho kudos to the volunteers that actually do the hard work.  The people make the tourney and most of the people are wonderful.  I've met many "friends" playing in the zone and TOH, like Mango, Jb, Pandora (BANK!) and list goes on.  Best wishes to all !

ho hum

JB the only reason why people snow about things is because they care (I hope) and they are wanting to see improvements.

There is a good way and a bad way to snow and sometimes it is just hypocritical.

ie when someone used the point system to climb very high then said they wanted it changed as to make it harder for others to do the same.

But what one person calls complaining another may see as attempting to improve.

After all nothing is ever complete and perfection is merely always moving forward.

We all love ToH and this thread is sappy and some people aren't comfortable with that. That is why not many people post to it.

The best way we can show our love of ToH is to play in it.

And the person who started this thread doesn't even do that anymore :-)

I've played a few games recently, so there!
I just didn't play against you for ToH, doesn't mean i don't play
In fact my clan is at war right now, ps. to Dargon and MKLTHRKNGL  play yer games!!!!

I didn't think my thread was sappy , lol  I just wanted to hear something positive on this board.  The reason i took a break from ToH was feeling suffocated with all the negativity, so i was hoping to change that in here

so c'mon readers you must have something nice to say hmm?  lets hear it!!

I like TOH because...

I like TOH becuase of.....

The Challenge, i love the challenge and the complex strategy invloved in online play and TOH gives us the ability to do that with a very large group of fun and experienced players.

The People,  I really enjoy the players in TOH. Meeting new people for an Enjoyable game of Heroes.  I enjoy the camaraderie the players.  I find myself sometimes being more involved with chatting in my game than the game itself.

The Ladder, It is nice to have a Ladder for Heroes I like being able to track my progress, or in my case--- track my regression back down the ladder to Cadet-level points.

The Tourneys,  So many different styles of sub-tournies exist within TOH that players from all styles of preference and maps can always find one to enjoy.  I only hope someday we will have an Addicts style KOR tourney.

The Learning, I enjoy learning from every game.  Every game i play i learn something new, something always happens during the game that i can learn from.  Knowing there are so many TOH'ers out there and having the ability to try and use my `new skills' on them is a great thing

The Volunteers, without them, there is no TOH.  To all of them.... THANK YOU.

History & Improvement

I guess I will post here as well... I would say first and foremost I like ToH because of its history.

As long as heroes exists, in whatever form, TOH will be there and not disappear.

All records stay in historical format; you can see your ranking in season I, you can see news that started TOH 2 years ago.  Players who had a record summer of '99 can see their win/loss and medals restored and playing again today.  Such is the beauty of TOH.

When you go to the rankings page, and see 100s of players with records of 100 or more games, you know that TOH is a piece of homm history.

Improvement - For those who have been in TOH since its first season know what I mean; the site is constantly improved and updated, and a possible reason for its success; it has never remained stagnant.

Heroes 4 TOH will be a another jump in the evolution of Heroes and the Tournament of Honor, and wait till you see the improvments in automation.

Improvement of Site

I think avoiding stagnation is very large part of what makes ToH great. So many people hear of it visit the site, and are so enthused by as Vesuvius said, the sense of history and maybe they can carve their own name into the history of Heroes of Might&Magic. Each person that comes leaves something, if only some losses and wins, or even teaching others to be warry of cheaters. Then some of them leave much more, adding ideas and their time to ToH and ensuring something new is always going on, so the old players keep coming back, and new players always arriving. Sure many people don't play often or even less than that, but everyone that ever played ToH for Heroes3 will come back sometime when Hereos4 comes out, and also even more new players, so if the history is always added to, ToH will always keep growing as long as Heroes exists as a gaming series. Of course there are even detractors of ToH who refuse to play ToH members or even talk to ToH members on zone, but they too are adding to the sense of history of ToH. I hardly play any ToH games anymore, mostly because of limited time and the fact when I have 4-5 hours to spend gaming I can't find a ToH game that is either non-random, non-closed map, or non-plebe within 2 hours of getting on zone. If play something else, I can get a game within 2 minutes of signing onto zone or wherever usually. Yet ToH and H3 is a fun enough game I still come back and try to get a game, maybe once a month or less I am succesful, but on those occasions it's all worth it. I have found quite a few ex or non ToH gamers on zone lately. Most of them quit or don't play ToH because of the maps situation, but will still play ToH members with the knowledge of their general skills due to rank and also the politics of online gaming.

I like toh because it allows me to put off all the things I should be doing and spend hours in erathia =0

I like toh because when the game was finished when I had completed the campaigns and scenarios when I was about to put the cd on the self for good I found a tournament that keeps the game alive.

I like toh because of the great fun and the great players I know through it.

I like toh because I can play in a tournament for free with prizes available!

We all owe Ves and all the volunteers for providing such great fun and expert service.

Oh yeah, and 3do owes TOH bigtime, but thats another thing.

In a spirit of all that is good and holy and against my previous resolution i decided to reply one thread and this is it. Why only one you ask? Well i am sitting in a Friendship Centre in Moosonee, Ont. and taking away valuable internet time from poor Ojibway and Cree children..

J/K I have been her  for 2 hours and no children have dropped by yet. I just needed to express my gratitiude to Ves and everyone else involved in TOH for a great job.

I have had my ups and downs with this ladder but i think that the positives greatly outweight the negatives. I think the TOH's best contribution is bringing in and exposing  new players to what is IMO a best strategy game EVER and at the same time providing top notch competition for the veterans.

Somehow through 1.5 years of playing online i can call myself a veteran without flinching and most of the skill i have acuired is due to TOH. I have been shown how this game can really be played, i have been humiliated,  and i have vanquished my opponents and i enjoyed every minute of iot. This cometitive aspect is a big reason i play in TOH. I know i am good and i want to play witht he best players out there.

The other reason is that this game attracts great people. Not only that it allows us to talk to them and get to know them. I have met many amazing people playing this game or even just chatting in the Zone. I won't list any names because i might forget someone, you know who you are

And last but not lest it is this forum where we can all talk about the game we love and whatever else we want as long as it is appoved by the censorship J/K

Once again thanks for a great tournament Ves and everyone else in it.
