Heroes damage and health stats  Posted 3-20-2001 15:45

The thing that strikes me the most in the picture are the Health and Damage stats of the hero. Although it seems a good idea to involve the heroes more actively in the fight (ie. they can inflict damage or get killed) I have some doubts how the 3DO developers will make this work. What attack, defence, hit-points stats does the hero get ??

I think there must be some extra protection for the heroes. I mean how can my hero survive against 5 dragons (or 10, or even 50 dragons). At some point the number of monsters and therefore damage dealt is just too big. After one such attack my hero dies, and in the current tactical war model there is absolutely no way i could prevent this.

Some additional changes in the combat system seem necessary to make it work.
Any ideas on this ?

(PS: The reason the system could work in the 'age of wonders' game is that there you have the limitation of 8 units engaging in battle)

Killing dragons...  Posted 3-20-2001 19:42

A good point you have there. But I am very happy that I am going to see my might heroes fighting. It was a little bit unfair in heroes versions till now, cuz magic heroes did damage with spells and they could be pretty good in att/def too.
Dragons (the majority of them) have breath attack, so, to be a dragon slayer you need to have some artifacts that have rezistance to fire, or so. I think this could balance a bit. Or multiple heroes joining the battle. Interesting...
I hope that the castle (town) will be more good looing, not just walls and in the middle of them town structures.
Anyway this is going to be a great game, just like other versions.
Have fun guys...

Balancing heroes power  Posted 3-21-2001 11:46

Razor, I am not sure you fully understood what i meant. Off course my hero can also be attacked by other units than dragons. So protection against breath based attacks does not solve the vulnerabilty of the heroes.

Even protection against any form of attack (ie. high defense and resistance skills) does not really help. Not only could does this have the potential drawback of making nearly invincible heroes (as was the case in the 'age of wonders' game). But also later in the game (or on larger maps) battles tend to get bigger with many more units involved. At some point the number of monsters involved and therefore damage dealt to the hero will be just too big. My fear is that in a large battle between two armies both lead by a hero, the first round will lead to the death of both heroes.

The thing that makes it extremely difficult to balance the power of heroes is that the scale of battles is just so diverse in the Heroes series.

I am very curious about the opinions of other veteran players on this topic. Let me know what you think.

Duel  Posted 3-21-2001 17:03

It is a bit strange, a hero can easily be killed this way. A better thing is that if they would make two options at the beginning of a battle they two players can choose whether to make an ordinary battle where the creatures fight or make a duel where the heroes fight, they heroes gain levels in the traditional way, all the EXP that the units gain together is what the hero gets.

attacking heros  Posted 3-23-2001 01:16

I am more concerened about what happens when two humans are fighting . The obvious strategy would be something like. "HEY!!! its a wizard!!! he has power 20!!! he can cast chain lightning, got to kill him first!!!" Then concentrate all attacks on that spell caster. Maybe 3do has thought of this but just in case....

Exactly !  Posted 3-23-2001 13:06

You got my point. Both players will attack the opponents hero with all units they got. This leads to death of both heroes in round 1, just like I described above.

NO CREATURES?!

You've seen the screenshot, heroes can fight. But what if there are no creatures in the game anymore? Just heroes who gain a variety of skills and items? Army of few heroes fighting another army of heroes? Or maybe there will only be single monsters like in AOW or LOM, no stacks? Otherways heroes are way too vunerable.

Facts about HOMM4

That "no creatures" possibility is very frightening, but there are some clues on the snapshot to reject it. The structure on the left seems a Beholder dwelling, and inside the walls (I'm seeing the snapshot only in my memory) I remember another structures which only could be a champion dwelling. Forget also the "one creature by stack" option.

Jennifer Bullard, a 3DO designer who was authorized to explain some doubts to the Stateman's Quill members, admitted the walls we see in the snapshow are not a town. "There are no towns present on the snapshoot" she said. Those walls are new map enhancements (like advanced garrisons). But... let's her to say it to you. I'm gonna search for his original post to the quillers and copy it here.

Searching... please stand by

Here you got it

Here you got it. The following quoted test is the response given by Maranthea (The 3DO designer I talked about) to the members of the Statesman's Quill forum. It discovers a fistful of very interesting things about HOMM4.

>Since some people are starting down the wrong tangents
>with their guesses I'm going to de-lurk for a moment,
>address some issues that I'm allowed and then go back into
>my office.

>The hourglass is not the ability to go between real-time
>and turn-based. Now I know that amazing screen shot was a >huge distraction, but the little bit of text had a few
>reassurances wedged in there.  "3DO sent us a screenshot
>from its upcoming TURN-BASED strategy game, Heroes of
>Might and Magic IV. The game is the latest installment in
>New World Computing's popular series, and it is currently
>scheduled for release in September. The game will support
>higher resolutions and feature significantly enhanced
>graphics. We'll have more details about the game soon."

>That funky structure you see is someone going hog wild
>with walls and bridges. They are decorative objects that
>can be used to block off sections and the like. There are >no towns present in the screen shot. I am saying nothing
>about player colors.

>Right now this is all I can clarify, but I do know more
>information will be trickling down the pipeline, I just
>can't say when. Keep your eyes open and remember what
>assume stands for.  ; )

>Maranthea

The main discussion there in the Quill was about the two groups of heroes seen in the map. What I expect about is that you will be playing many PARTIES of heroes, each one having his own creatures. There was a hero portrait repeated in both groups, maybe the leader of the party. Imagine three of your favorite heroes sent as a party to a dangerous mission in a far land and facing united the enemy threats. With a good warlock, a good barbarian, and a good necromancer, your "dream team" could be overwhelming.

If u ll play Age of Wonders with resolution 1024*768 or higher the graphics ll be almost the same as in this heroes4 screenshot and it is the great shame on NWC because Age of wonders is quite an old game and has not very good graphics.
But i hope the only reason of it is the bad quality of screenshot.

No castles

Hello, count Duke (don't know the appropiate treatment)

If you read carefully this thread you'll find the following text in the 3DO communication I inserted some time ago:

"That funky structure you see is someone going hog wild with walls and bridges. They are decorative objects that can be used to block off sections and the like. THERE ARE NO TOWNS PRESENT IN THE SCREENSHOT."

I personally prefer the towns like they are in HOMM3, although they can pass through different graphics shile you build up structures. About the spell to guess the buildings inside an enemy town, that's a good idea.

Heroes or Age of Empires?

I don't know... forgive me if this may be going out on a limb, but it seems like the new heroes engine for HOMM 4 looks strikingly familiar to Age of Empires, or at least the screenshot does...

I did read that it was still turnbased, and I'm not sure if that detail of the town will be seen in the adventure window, completely removing the "build in the town and adventure" model that sets Heroes apart from some of the other notions.

I do like the look of the town, however, and it looks like it could be some fun.  I have to share the general opinion of the heroes being killed as well, though I think the idea of being able to combine heroes into a single party could work...  It would mean having to buy new heroes every once in a while because of a favourite hero's death, which you'll have to begin in building again, unless there is some advanced form of "resurrect" that could bring the hero back to life at a later point.

Hero resurrection idea

Just thinking, if you could resurrect a hero, make it so that the hero cannot gain any more experience, since he is reanimated with magic. Hero would just have what experience he has before death. Or that could be a low level of the hero resurrect option.
