Nirvana vs any other rock band

Ok a few days ago me and some friends were all at a bar, having a drink. Somehow the conversation drifted towards music, and I mentioned Guns N' Roses as my favourite and one of the best bands ever. I was quickly told that they're ok, but no one compares to Nirvana. As the ultimate 'gunner' which I am, I felt insulted and we started arguing. Althoughj we were all good friends the argument got fierce, as I strongly attacked the rest of my friends, who all prefered Nirvana. After a bitter argument, none had changed theyr opinions. But no one could really, I mean really prove me why nirvana is better than GNR; or any other rock band of that time.
So here I am, asking all of you: why on earth is Nirvana considered so damn good? Or, in other words, are they better than GNR? I really think not...

The value of a band is mesured by the length of their hair. Oh, wait, that would mean Guns'n'Roses were good. Nah, forget about that.

Seriously, if you are looking for the greatest rock band of all time, you need a much larger scope than Guns'n'Roses and Nirvana. Much larger.

No not ever!!!!

The Gunners are ALWAYS the best!
No-one comes close!
Sure Nirvana was good while they lasted, but GNR kicked their habits, they didn't grab the nearest shotgun!

I listened to RAP hahaha
yes, Dr Dre, MC hammer, I dont remember cuz I was 12 and 13.

Nirvana smells like teen spirit was what got me into the other side.
I soon got into my favorite band NiNe inch nails.
Nirvana -after i developed my sense of music- honestly makes my stomach quiver with some of their loud songs. (yuckiest example is the hidden track in disc smells like teen spirit)

GnR, is more talented than nirvana. Their style requires more talent than Nirvanas.  Some of Nirvana is very catchy and not all bad. But like I said, the screeching guitars and screams can turn my stomach

Well i used to listen to Nirvana, back in my teen days....than i grown up , they are good thouh (much better than GAR anyway)
GAR are just a commercial piece of $**t, maybe even worse than the rest of metal bands.
I am really opened about music, but metal IMHO is simply the worst kinda music ever existed. I find it empty, ponitless and above all false.

GNR were never metal, they were rock.
Their songs are technically difficult to play and very well constructed, compared to Nirvana, whose songs could be included in a beginner's book of guitar songs.
I do like Nirvana, they had lots of great tunes, but GNR just had a bit more class about them than any other rock act at the time.
And who cares if they're commercial ffs! If I had a band, I'd sell out tomorrow - I'd rather have millions of fans worldwide than a couple of grungy layabouts smoking pot and debating whether I'm better than *insert other un-known but non-commercial band here*
Not to mention the exta cash.

If my friends had read this they would have killed you, I mean literally.
Hey Shirastro, I don't like metal much either, but the worst?! Come on, it can't be worse than Beyonce or Enrique.
Also, metal is an extremely complicated kind of music, given the complexity of the musical composition (i'm not talking about all metal sub-genres, just some). I think it's closest to classical music, but since I don't like classical music that much, I'm not a metal fan either.

PS: I prefer Nirvana to GnR.

Thou i dont like neither Beyonce or Erique, i would shoose them above GnR.
I'm not saying that tehnicly they weren't good, but that  is not what art is about.
But i guess it's all about your personal view of art.
IMO it's not about how you are doing it, but what you are doing, and i don't like what they (GnR) are doing.

Why are you comparing GnR and Nirvana anyway? I dont think they have anything in common beside using guitars.

They don't have much in common - and Kurt and Axl hated eachother's guts. But they were the 2 biggest guitar acts of their time.
I DO have an open music taste, and will listen to the likes of Beyonce and Enrique IF I like the song.
But GNR were the reason I wanted to learn the guitar - to BE Slash.

Nirvana was the revolution for the 90's. No other band has had such a profound influence on popular music in the past 20 years or more.

Oh, Slash... that reminds me of a fellow aquintance of mine who also had a crsh on rock, before he turned to islamic fundamentalism after his father had died. You beware of those evil influences Asmodean.

Nirvana was so popular only AFTER cobain comitterd suicide. It was a good marketing strategy, IMO. But they ar not that good, grunge is not about good style. It's a lot of riffing and that's all.

A, btw, Sihastro... *sigh* ...talking about musical culture... *sigh* let's just say you have much to learn about musical culture. And i'm saying that coz i don't wanna get messy

If you were romanian, i would have understand why you think rock is crap but seriously, it's not a clever thing to say that, because you don't like rock, then rock is crap.

You do not hold the ultimate opinion, mister. I DO

this is incorrect. "Nevermind" sold like crazy and Kurt was pretty much alive then.

as for my personal taste, I like Nirvana very much, which doesn't mean I listen to everything they made. For example, "Bleach" sucked for me. Same goes for GnR, I like some of their songs, but they did alot of mediocre stuff as well. I recently transfered one of the "Use your Illusion" albums to my MP3 player and listened to it while running. It was a good run =)

Nirvana's great! My favourite CD is Unplugged in New York... I love that one. But no one, I said no one, can compare to the might of Metallica! OK, they're not that good anymore, but Black Album is the greatest album ever made.
But GNR vs. Nirvana? Hmm... GNR has made a couple of great songs (14 years, Sweet child of mine, civil war and so on), but when they sucks, they sucks. Nirvana did mostly good songs, and a couple of bad ones... So my vote goes to Nirvana. We love you Kurt!

You couldn't be more wrong
It is becouse i love rock that i dont like GnR.
....*sigh* You think that i dont have a musical culture *sigh*...
Its funny how people take a having of taste with a lack of one

Anyway i dont think i have to deffend my music taste. As both you and i said its just our opinion and i never pretended that mine is the ultimate one.
