That's what my friends said. Musical revolution of the 90's. That's when I come in and ask: revolution? What revolution? What did they revolutionise? I'm sorry, but at the beginning of the 90's there were a lot of great rock bands, GNR was just one of them. Aerosmith and Metallica are just 2 examples i can think of; but there were lots more. What did Nirvana do in music that was so radical, compared to all the rest...besides having the frontman commit suicide.
Oh, by the way, no one can ever top Slash.

I am not sure I would title it a 'revolution', but I think Nirvana was the most influential rock band during the particular time...that time being when the music industry broke free of the 1980's 'techno', 'new wave', 'electronic' type of music (for lack of a better description). Too bad these young rock stars keep succumbing to their lives' pressures, otherwise who knows where or how far their musical influence could have progressed.

Nirvana revolutionized music by being the promotor and establisher of a whole new genre - grunge. They "invented" it, hallo?!
And the 90's, a time of desoriented youth, without ideals and future. They were the saviors for the X-generation. A retrieve of the lost identity, or better said - the creation of a new one. Just listen to their lyrics and all will reveal to you.
as for GnR lyrics, I cant see anything special here.
And that is a revolution for me!

I Have Something To Say About This
Well I will say this:
 I remember Guns-N-Roses when they were fresh. It was long before Nirvana. Guns-N-Roses + Metallica were the first bands to ever actually give me pause. I hated heavy metal rock before those bands. They brought me over from nothing to something. All of that was when I was about 13 years old. I remember it vividly. I was in junior high(7th grade I think) and I decided to take a drama class for my choice elective. In the class I had these two friends that nobody else would really talk to because they were weird by their standards. Lance always wore jeans and a T-shirt of Metallica/Iron Maiden/Jimmy Hendrix/Guns-N-Roses/etc... Greg dressed kinda strange too. He always wore the same clothes to school. A pair of raggedy old faded blue jeans, Pink Floyd white crew-neck T-shirt underneath a very old military over shirt. I think his dad was in Vietnam or something. We sat in the corner together while the other kids would form those tight-nit cliques. We didn't care. Anyway, Lance was asking me if I liked heavy metal and I told him no because all they did was yell really loud. I said, "Who cares if those people are angry? I don't." Well Lance just started laughing when I said this. He said, "Ok you're right about a couple of groups but not these. Megadeath does that but not Guns-N-Roses or Metallica." I looked at him with mistrust. He told me that I need to grow up and learn about the real world. I scoffed and told him he was an idiot. So he told me that I should take these two tapes with me on my boyscout trip that weekend that I was going on. He said, "Dude you're gonna come back a man. Trust me." I really didn't want to listen to the stuff. Anyway my scout troop and I were headed for a place on the coast in the Gulf of Mexico called Port Aransas. The trip was long, very long, and it rained the whole way so we had to drive slow. I was so bored in the van that I finally gave in and decided to listen to his tapes. That was the first time I ever heard "Welcome to the Jungle". I was transformed. I started moving my head as I looked out the rain covered window. I looked around and everyone else was sleeping. I couldn't sleep because my heart was racing a million miles an hour and I wanted to just start banging the seat in front of me. I didn't want to because I was angry, but because I had so much energy that was being created inside me, I badly needed a release of some physical kind. So I simply began to throw my head back and forth as hard and fast as I could. The other guys began to wake up and get all angry at me because I waking them up. I just didn't care. I kept going until I couldn't go anymore.
When I got back from the trip and met Lance in drama class I smiled like I never did before. He took one look at me and said, "Holy **** you've changed." I just kept smiling and I told him that "I didn't care about the stupid class or my grades"(I never would have said that before). he asked me why and I said because I knew what i wanted in life now. He asked me what it was and I told him, "I don't know but who cares? I'm just happy." That was the start of my interest for heavy metal. There are a lot of bands that suck so badly while others can reach you in a way that you never thought possible. After the experience I never bought the tapes for Guns-N-Roses. I was satisfied with the new appreciation I found within myself. I didn't need to hear them again to know they were good.
As for Nirvana they inspire me. To this very day when I hear the music I leave this world and find a different existence. In that existence I feel like people understand me. I don't need to stay there because I have a family that loves me but if I was all alone then I would never turn the music off, if you know what I'm saying. It's exactly as the name implies, "Nirvana".

PPl still argue over what bands are better than others? *sighs* What's the world comin too? Why argue about Nirvana and Guns & Roses? Why not about more...recent bands? Such as 3 Doors Down and Good Charlotte? I suppose many here don't listen to that style of music. Some may proclaim that its not even music, and yet there are others who'll argue that it's the better than most.

Yes, indeed, why do we argue about musical legends such as Nirvana or GNR when we have the brilliant recent music such as Good Charlotte and what not. Well while we're at it I suppose we could forget about Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen too. Who needs that old stuff...after all, we have Good Charlotte, real music. Yeah man!

My apologies. So my taste for music may be different from some other's. Yet, I'm positive that there is no overall BEST rock band. That's like saying that Pepsi is the best soft drink.

So that would mean that so many people only listen to those bands because they were proclaimed good, when in fact they have no value and all those people have no taste in music. Damn shame....

Actually I discovered Guns n'Roses/Metallica/Queen/Nirvana - all the legendary bands by myself. No-one in my school or house was proclaiming them as legendary.
But heavy metal/rock is not ALL that I listen to. I like quite a bit of modern pop music and R&B and people like John Mayer, Alanis, Sheryl Crow, The Corrs etc.
But I wouldn't tell anyone what to think about music.
Except that GnR are the best.
And Coke is better than Pepsi.

I am not saying that listening to those bands is bad, but evryone should build their own taste, and dont just limit them selfs on famos bands. You don't know what you are missing before you try it. Frostwolf if you think that good charlotte is the only thing a modern music has to offer, than you are wrong.
If you listen GnR you should do it becouse you really like them, not just becous they are famus and "legendary".

Queen, they suit me because of Range of music and their live act was just superb. None of the others have ever compared. Plus I like to be able to understand lyrics in the song without having to look them up online first...

Nirvana - Is supposed to be the band of the 90s. However the lead singer Kurt Cobain supposedly commited suicide sometime in the early 90s.
Guns and Roses - Well I guess I'm a youngin to, because I don't know whats going on. I've probably heard there music before, but I'm not sure.
I like Sublime though. They are the band of the 90s IMO.
