Well... I haven't forget them.. but they have all those problems with simple spell like lighting bolt(a powerfull spell, even if only lvl2) and with chain-lighting

lvl1: centaurs (fast and tough)
lvl2: harpy hags (strike&return, served with frenzy.. not to forget that no ret.)
lvl3: grand elves, I hate them, but I need some shooters
lvl4: crusaders (double attack)
lvl5: Minotaurs, damnit! Ok, mighty moos might have the death stare, but I hate everyone is always picking them into their dream teams.
lvl6: maybe nagas, for no retal.
lvl7: Black Drags, or phoenixes, for the reasons Woock already listed
My army would need more shooters, but I didnīt get them fit anywhere.

lvl 1 - centaur captains - very fast
lvl 2 - harpy hags - runs away after attacking
lvl 3 - evil eyes - shooters
lvl 4 - vampire lords - get hit points back
lvl 5 - minotaur kings - strong
lvl 6 - dread knights - awesome damage and speed
lvl 7 - black dragons - spell immunity

You got me thereviking with that lvl4 creature. They really are the best. No enemy retalation and all the rest. Cool stuff indeed. About Minoturs.. Well don't see why. Strenght makes someone vulnerable to magic. Mad Cows have Magik. Minotaurs defeteated my MaD Cows. At the part with Death Knights. Believe it's wrong. Naga Queens have fixed damage, no enemy retaliaton and also same HP as Death Knight. While Death Knights got only Double Damage(with chance) and Curse. About those Dragons... well must say that we apply the 2 cuting parts issue. While immune to enemy magic, also immune to your magic so can't cast a Cure at least. Only big advantage is those 300HP, but in compartion with Chaos Hydras... well.... too bad they get overwhlemed.... No enemy retalation and that awsome multiple attack

yeah but sometimes when i play them they die so fast 
but still think that they are the best lvl 4 unit
