If allowing debators to address spectators would make a mess (I agree, this could be distracting), than the debators could agree to 'ignore' miscellaneous comments. It would probably be easier to get debators to follow guidelines than peanut galleries, since the debators have more invested in the structure.  Personally, I found the separate debate thread rather awkward and ineffective, so this was just an alternate idea.
