Viking's Guide: How to Rock?
This is a guide for the ones who wanna rock.
First
(This is for people who don't listen to rock)
Whatever music you are listening to, you must give it up and start listening to rock. You must first get to like it and know how to appreciate it.
The rest of the guide is useful only after finishing the first step
Second
You must start looking for cool rockers or rock bands that you are gonna listen more often, like U2, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, Def Leppard, Guns'n'Roses, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Kiss and... I am not even gonna list that many...
Third
You must decide which of the instruments in the bands do you like the best. When you hear those solos by drummers like John Bonham, or lead guitarists like Eddie Van Halen, you will try and imitate them, by drumming the air or playing the air guitar... using you imagination in other words. (If you never do this then you aren't enjoying enough).
Fourth
You will start getting poster and t-shirts of your rock bands.
Before I go onto fifth you must know some classic rock bands and at least hear them play once to continue this.
Fifth
Unless you already dont have a guitar or a big drum set, you should by one (unless you wanna be a lead singer). Keyboard is also fine. You begin playing the instrument.
Sixth
The minimum requirement for a good guitar player is to know how to play the Smoke on the Water riff, from the Deep Purple, perfectly. For lead singers, you must be able to sing good(well duh), close to Freddie Mercury because there is no way you can ever sing as good as him. For drummers, you must know how to keep your rock rythm and switch to another without mistake.
Seventh
After proving that you are a good gutar/drummer/singer/keyboard player you will start getting friends that are about the same skill as you. You will for a small garage band and start playing songs. Styles that you can play: Easy Rock, Hard Rock, Rock'n'Roll, Heavy Metal, Metal, Power Metal, Industrial Rock, Progressive Rock, Alternative Rock... and such. Making up your own style might be good, too.
Final
If you get good enough and publish an album, you must get a good place on the charts. If you don't then keep trying until you get there or until you give up. Being famous then gets you to major concerts and interviews.
Some cool rockers.
You can put other bands in here too. You can discuss songs. You can comment on my guide. No "bad spelling" comments, please.
ROCK ONLY
Don't like it? Well then Too Bad

I'll never sing nearly as good as Freddie, while a guitar or drums would be straining my wallet quite a bit

Yeah, but neither did Robert Plant and many other singers but they were still popular. Being close to Freddie is like being second best or third.

Well, one day I'll learn to play the guitar . I may never be nearly as good as Brian May, but I've got a better chance becoming a good guitarist than singer

Drums seems simple enough for me, so maybe that would be a better choice?

It your choice... But you have to know how to play a guitar anyway. Bass requires rythm skills. Lead Guitars require rythm too.. but they are just awesome in solos.
