need some help
ok, i'm running windows XP pro and i'm trying to install HOMM3(no expansions). now, when i try and install, it gets to the legal agreement, and when i click next, it gives me an install shield engine error. i cant seem to get past this. i've updated windows, i've rebooted several times, i've even copyed the CDs contents onto my HD and tryed to install from there, nothing, same error. anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm.. Lots of threads about Heroes 3 Complete vs WinXP, but those are for running the game, not installing. I don't remember seeing anything for the original H3. Ah well, it can't hurt to try the usual answers:
1) Change the compatibility mode. Right click the install program (probably from your HD copy), Properties, Compatibility tab, change to Win98/ME.
2) Kill hardware acceleration for sound. Start->Run->DXDIAG->Sound tab.
3) Try installing in Safe Mode. Shutdown->Restart->hit F8 during the reboot.
If it still won't install, give us the exact error including the hex code.
Oh, hey, did you get WinXP Service Pack 2? I've seen quite a few complaints for various games not installing. I already rolled back to SP1. SP2 kept getting in my way. It's evil! EVIL I tell you! *snarl fang spit*

well, changing the compatibility got me farther, it now asks me for about DX 6.1 before install  . but same as before, right after the service agreement it gives me this error:
InstallShield Engine
InstallShield Engine has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
error signature
AppName: _ins5576._mp AppVer: 5.53.168.0 ModName: chkreqs.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00007fc6
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUME~1\Andrew\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER9.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt
and thats all, having clicked on the 'click here' tabs for extra info. i tryed in safe mode, same deal. as for service pack 2, all i know is i DLed all the updates i could from the automatic updater, and i dont know how to check for service pack 2.

Seems you're not the only one getting that error.
As for which service pack you have, Control Panel->System->General tab should tell you.
