I've already decided that the first competitions that will be set up will be so that everyone can compete. They will be medium-sized projects. So basically we will have word limits to help us do things.

I also think we should have mini-comps for those that have the time.

This means like something like.

Describe a tree in 75-100 words.

Maybe something less dry than this. More like...

Describe a dragon in 75-100 words.

Dragon one sounds good... I think that if we have a mini comp first with just the few of us, then it might attract more members. And there should be an experience system.

I like role play experience systems. Especially detailed ones.

But it seems that Mighty Mage is away so we might have to wait for him seeing as he counts for a large percentage of the the whole guild.

Well if this gets popular I'll incorporate some of the more ambitious ideas that Shadowcaster and I have planned.

Edit: Here is the long term goal for this guild. To enter this free contest and if possible even to win the contest, which means we get published ^_^.

I have a proposal that I think would really set some long term goals for this guild. One of those being to spread its wings and get new forums involved and secondly. There's a competition that I think we should aim to join.

The competition is called Writers and Artists of the Future. It is one of the most prestigious competitions for fantasy/sci-fi artwork and writing. Some of the most famous illustrators and authors in the fantasy genre are judges. The winner's of the competitions will have their pieces will be published

Here's the website.

http://www.writersofthefuture.com/

I am also proposing this is as the ultimate long term goal for the Guild of Pixelartists. I think we, as in both guilds, should work together on this to improve our crafts and enter in this contest.

The specs for the Illustrating Contest goes as follows. You submit 3 pieces of work. They must convey 3 themes. That means you can have one be dragon's, one be wizards, one be elves or whatever. The themes must be related to the fantasy or sci-fi genre. And there must be exactly 3 of them. 3 themes, 3 pics. They must be black and white only. They can be computer generated. There is no size restriction, however it must be mailed in an envelope with a specific size, so keep that in mind.

The specs for the Writing Contest goes as follows. Maximum of 17,000 words. It must be about either fantasy or science fiction. No poetry or works for children.

Note that there are numerous rules there that you must follow. If you don't follow the rules, you will be sent back a copy of the rules. I outlined the ones that were the most important. The rest are simply format guidelines. Like putting the page number on each page of the manuscript or submitting only a black and white photocopy of the original work.

Oh yeah another cool thing. Entries can be written by any number of authors. So if anyone wants to combine their efforts towards writing a story. Then go for it. However I wouldn't get more than three, because I think it would end up being too long or too difficult to split up into parts.

The first character was unique. It had never been done before. However I felt like the second character had been done before. She felt like the same strong feminine character that you see far too often. She may be a badass mofo, but she didn't have that same uniqueness that made you identify with the first character.

Granted steriotypical characters can be used very effectively if they are used correctly. I just don't feel that her character was as engaging. It could be that you are from a culture that is more interested in stories of royalty than our American one. They simply aren't part of the American culture.

When writing a work of fiction, you need to remember who your audience is sometimes. One book may be very popular in one part of the world, but not in another, or popular among one group of people, but not among another.

On the contrary, your first chapter, created an entire culture. An entire civilization right at your feet. It was very original. It was by no means the steriotype. For some reason, everyone can relate to the old reluctant hero. Everyone is unsure of themselves whether or not they hide it. Everyone is sometimes afraid of falling on their face.

The reluctant heroes like Frodo come to mind.

I think you should consider writing the story from the perspective of Karn. That a strong character like the one in your second chapter would be viewed much better from the eyes of Karn.

Chapter 2 is a great exercise of getting to know your character, but the reader doesn't need to know everything about the character. Only you the writer does. Sometimes many things are simply unnecessary to the story and development of characters.

I like where you are going with this though.

If I was you, I would write a few more chapters from the perspective of each character to see where it goes.

But you might consider to just use one of them as the beginning of your story.

How do you propose to spread the wings of a guild that doesn't even have enough feathers to make a bird?

No offense, but your thread is 2 pages long, only four people have joined, and you haven't had one competition yet. While this may be a good idea for you, you should wait a little while before setting too big of goals or they will be forgotten over time.

Welcome Rage.

We'd love to have someone who's so avid in writing.

I have so many questions. I'd love to see what you have. However if you are looking to get it published, you shouldn't post all of it here. You should also send yourself a copy through the mail. Because this will give yourself a copywrite for cheap, because the post office will have a record of what time and date the package was delivered and you can use this when you bring it to court that way no one can steal it.

Also don't post all of the story here. Because then publishing companies will think you give away your work for free and you don't want that. If anything you might show us the beginning of it here or send it by email.

If you'd like to know more about this, my mother is getting one of her books published. I could ask her some questions.

But from what she's told me, the way you want to go about getting published in the fantasy genre is by hiring a literary agent who knows the market and will sell your book to the companies. You should look into that.

Here's a website with tons of links that can help you find one.

Oh another thing. I would strongly recommend doing essay contests such as this Writers of the Future Contest.

If you place well or win prizes, then it looks great as a resume to the publishing companies. Establishing a name for yourself is very important.

I invite you to join any of our RPs here in Glade. We are always looking for people, especially experience writers, to join.

That is what we will be working up to. For now we are going to improve our skills with small contests and when any of us feel that we are ready to start on a major project, this Writers of the Future Contest will be a great outlet for that.

Edit - Khaelo showed interest in this thread. Welcome aboard Khaelo. So our main goal is to get some writing done do some essay contests like the Writers of the Future one. For fun, plus if we do well it builds a resume, so hopefully one of us can one day do what every writer should dream of...

But for now it's just something fun to do to help each other improve. Get feedback from other people.

Okay, so RSF talked me into joining.  Hello, everyone.

My first contribution is material copyrighted by someone else.    This is an Intelligence Dossier from the book Dynamic Characters by Nancy Kress.  I've made some tweaks to it.  The point of the dossier is to investigate characters in depth and flesh them out if necessary.  It can also spring plot points by helping the author determine how a character would react to a given situation.

In some cases, posting a character's entire dossier may not be helpful if it reveals things that should not be public.    Post whatever you deem appropriate.  (I don't care for Part Four, personally; it feels too non-fantasy for my writing.)  The length is due to the many suggestions/options.  Edit as you see fit.

Enough yammering...

Edit: formatting!  No tabbed indents allowed, and colons turn into smilies very easily...

example character

Just to get this started...

This is my character Khalida (was Karida, but that name's not period ).  She's a flexible historical horror/fantasy character I play with in all sorts of scenarios.  She's vaguely from the Buffy-verse, where vampires are evil demons in human corpses.  I added the Rules of Ghouls.  Set 1: Ghouls are the result of a failed attempt by a vampire to create another vampire.  They are bound to eat only raw meat (or human flesh, depending on my mood), have characteristic red eyes, have the usual attributes of superhuman strength, speed, etc, and change forms into scary teeth & claw humanoids when angered.  It's a tortuous form, and some ghouls turn nasty.  Khalida is from the other group, which vents its anger upon the demons which caused the undead form in the first place -- ghouls are uniquely suited to hunting vampires.  Set 2: (for when I don't feel like including vampires) Ghouls are human-djinn hybrids who have been killed violently; they have the same physical characteristics as Set 1.  This profile covers Khalida's character under both sets of ghoul rules and in most time periods.  As a basic rule, she grows less optimistic and more disillusioned with time, although she has never quite lost her faith.

As you can see, the finished info is shorter than the template.  I left off some portions, most notably Part Four.  For those of you working in established worlds, like the RPs, the background header shouldn't be necessary.

Part One: Basic Stats
Name:  Khalida bint Ja'far
Also known as: Katrina (psuedonym)
Age / Birthdate: Age 19 at death, born ~615 CE
Place of Birth:  Medinah (Yathirab)
Height: 5'3"
Weight: Slender
Coloring
  *Skin: mid-brown
  *Eyes: scarlet
  *Hair: black
Distinguishing Marks: red eyes
Ethnic Background:  Arab
Religion: Islam
___Degree of Practice: Pious if unorthodox
Current Address: rents
___Brief Description of Home: Usually an inn or waypoint, occasionally squats in cemetaries.
___Other Occupants: none
Current Occupation: Hunts vampires, does nursing & hospitality/charity work for the poor
___Income level: Low to non-existant
Significant Past Jobs: Merchant's daughter (=none)
Education: Literate, self-educated.

Family of Origin
___Father: Ja'far ibn Abi-Salih al-Saghir.  Deceased.
___Mother: Ibn Abi-Salih's second wife called herself Umayah.  She vanished shortly after Khalida's birth, leaving her daughter to be raised by Layla, ibn Abi-Salih's first wife (now deceased).
___Siblings: none

Marital Status: Never married

Medical Record
General Health: Dead.  Other than that...
*Chronic Conditions:  ghoul.  Cannot eat anything but raw meat, cannot drink anything but water.

Police Record: Being an unescorted female involved in social work (not to mention violent encounters), Khalida gets in trouble occasionaly, has been arrested several times, but usually is released by friend or escapes & vanishes.  Never convicted, and is never considered a major criminal.

Friends/ Organizations / Memberships:  Khalida moved easily amongst the sub-culture of ghouls until the species was eradicated by hostile vampires and mages in ~1600 CE.  Una, the friend she would rather not have, saved Khalida from the genocide.  Since then, the sorceress Una and the immortal Historians (i.e. Kjaran  Kjallaksson, Penelope, etc.) have been her primary social ties.  However, she tends to prefer the company of mortal, Muslims to her immortal, idolotrous friends.

Part Two: Preferences & Mannerisms
Dress:  Affordable, whatever's available.  She wears hijab (full-cover veil) in society, preferring black, red, and natural colors.  When on the hunt, she wears a head veil combined with male clothing because it's usually more practical.

Grooming: Average grooming and cleanliness for position

Speech
   *Pace: average
*Accent/Dialect: Her accent is hard to pin down, thanks to the passing of time and her impressive collection of linguistic fluencies.
Voice: average, soft, but authoritative if she's annoyed

Mannerisms
General: Projects calm image, particularly under stress.
Posture: Straight, not stiff.  Moves gracefully.
Gestures: Gestures deliberate & controlled, usually to illustrate a point.
