We are all children

It all happened in December of 1988. I was five years old back then and was living in Moscow with my brothers and mother. My Mom bought tickets to the play “Peter Pan” which was performed by an American cast who were touring the USSR. I had never been to that kind of a spectacle before and I was impressed by everything. The play was in English and nobody in my family knew the language except my cousin who had just begun studying it at school and from time to time she made comments like, hey I know that word, it means “a crocodile” or I just heard them say “to sleep”. As the play started I began watching it with utmost attention and though I didn’t understand a single word, inside my mind I made up my story about Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. When Peter Pan began to fly I cried out loud “Look Mommy, she’s flying!” and my Mom said, “I think she’s suspended on ropes.” However, I wanted to believe that Peter Pan, Wendy and the lost boys were really flying by magic. I liked everything about this play, the decorations, the orchestra, the special effects, the wonderful actors, the brightest memories of my childhood were connected with this play but with time I forgot about it or I should better say I thought that I forgot about it.

Yesterday I was watching P. J. Hogan’s movie “Peter Pan” on T.V. and suddenly is if by magic I had these flashbacks of separate scenes of the play. I thought that after 15 years I wouldn’t be able to remember a thing about the play but I did! I could even remember the face of the woman who was playing Peter Pan! As the movie ended I turned off the T.V., closed my eyes and began to dream that I was a child again. And all my childhood dreams and memories came back to me. I forgot everything about the world and my problems and I imagined myself a brave captain who was sailing the high seas in search of new lands and then I imagined myself a mighty pirate who was digging up a treasure in a tropical island and then I imagined myself a knight who was saving a princess from a fierce dragon. I don’t know for how long I was lying there dreaming but it was wonderful. And suddenly I had this desire to become a child again and to never grow up, just like Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up…

Setting Yourself Free

I really enjoyed reading your post Ratmonkey. It reminded me of how much I also enjoy dreaming of adventure, magic, and the carefree infinite joy of being young again. I thankyou for sharing your thoughts and I am reminded that growing old does not mean I have to stop dreaming. I think our dreams keep us alive and set us free much like the children who were sprinkled with pixie dust and flew away to Never Never Land.

We can't afford to lose the innocence of our youth. For if we do then we've lost that which is most precious to us, our imagination. Don't grow up, fly far away, and keep your dreams close to your heart. Live life as it was truly meant to be, not as others would dictate it to you.

thanks consis, somehow I knew that you were going to be the first to post here!

and yes, we must never stop dreaming, because imagination is the only thing that makes us different from animals.

I believe we must lose the innocence of our youth, if we’re ever to begin the real dreaming.
