10 KB for signature pics?
I think this is ridiculous. I understand why the rule was made a couple years ago. But let's be honest. I don't know anyone who doesn't have some sort of high speed internet. Now that phone companies carry DSL so widely and cable companies have it now too.
Does it really have to be that small? I think it's rather annoying to be told that a pic that's 20 KB is too big. It's not that big. On my comp back home I can load the entire page at the blink of an eye at the blink of an eye. And that thing is a dinosaur. Even pages with lots of pics on it is fine. Plus half the members don't even have pics. So let's say there's 10 posts on a page. Now you got 100 KB. If you have trouble downloading 100 KB extra nowadays and you are online enough to come to HC and post actively than I feel bad for you.
Hell my internet connection is 1000kb/s.

Yes, but....
This message board is an international meeting forum. Outside of america, how many people are there that actually have 56k dial-up? I'd wager that some people are actually grouped as a family to a single computer that cost quite a bit of money to barely afford the 56k connection.
You have to remind yourself how fortunate we americans are RedSoxFan3. Our economy allows us to equip average citizens with truly expensive and normally unaffordable priviledges. Many other countries are struggling the way we were back in the early 1980's. And many more have only just begun to form and write a suitable constitution for their near-fledgling sovereignty.

as for the subject, i see no point in loading a picture with the size of something as less (for me) as 100kb as a boring signature.
IMO a signature should consist of a quote or something. A message you want to put forward. Not a big boring picture. But still if you got a pic you want as signature you got that possibility as you can reduce size and colours and such to be well within the limit of 10kb.
As for the non subject, this thread seem to have some patronizing message in it which i dont like. Dont judge everyone else based on yourself RSF.

I connect to the internet through 56K modem. New Zealand has plenty of other options, but this is the cheapest, and I don't really need a faster connection. Mighty old modem can download 500 megs in 24 hours when required, while uploading another 200 megs.
100KB takes about 30 seconds to download on a 56K modem.
Index page is under 50KB in size with the images.
Forum display page is 50-60KB.
Viewing a 20-post viewthread page is 50-100KB without images. Add an average 30KB of avatars. Another 15KB for advert (if any) and smileys. And you have about 120KB.
Some members, if the 10KB rule was not here, use 120KB signatures. If there were 10 signatures averaging 50KB on a viewthread page to load, that's half a megabyte and would take 2 minutes and 30 seconds from a modem user. For faster connections of course the time would shift from instant to a few seconds and wouldn't be too noticeable.
10KB takes 3 seconds to load on modem, which seems feasible for a signature. Properly optimised average size signature image fits nicely into 10kb.

I'm on a 56k modem at home. You're assuming a certain economic standard here, RSF. Cable, DSL, and the rest are expensive, even in the US.  Large images cause significant slow-downs for me. It's one thing when in a designated picture thread; it's another in every thread across the board. For one, I appreciate the 10 KB rule.

I didn't have pics in my signature in college.
Edit: My bad. I had asked several people about this and everyone had DSL or Cable, so it seemed as though no one I knew had dialup.

If you have a larger picture that you just have to show off, why not use your own Personal Page and show it off right there in your profile for everyone to see?
