You may need to mention if you're accepting votes from people around the globe or stricly American members...
As a Canadian I'm not sure my opinion on what your pledge should be is appropriate....
(you COULD ask people who pole to say where they are from and then your pole would reflect opinions from around the world)
just a thought....

Just wanted to ask before I did.....
(just to add, I'm a french catholic but don't feel that religious reference should be imposed on all citizens of a country... The freedom to choose is in our bill of rights therefore I find it inapropriate to be in a pledge of allegiance.)

The American Religious Majority
We are a 76% christian majority country. Most of the majority are some form of Protestant. You will find literally thousands upon thousands of break-away protestant mini-churches who came up with their own name and have their little inner circle of so-called 'bible preachers'. This could be anything ranging from the larger Lutheran sects to smaller community-oriented/funded protestant buildings whose name/title was created by 1-2 generation pulpit preachers.
Basically, we have and unending supply of bible-fanatics who are strangley motivated to cutlivate their own loyal set of followers. This is why America is often referred to as the "kingdom of cults".
On a personal note, I must say that's why I respect the arguments of Lews_Therin. Whenever someone posts a bible quote or reference he is usually there to argue against. I find his arguments are largely based in sound logic most of the time. It's people like him that help balance the growing concern of countries like mine(America) where christian secularism runs rampant and practically out of control.

Irish.
Raised Catholic.
Voted against.
Looking at America it seems hypocrytical of them to have this phrase in the pledge when in the Constitution it says that there should be separation of church and state.
Not an attack - just an observation.

So, Consis, are you for or against? I kinda got the imprassion that you're not too positive about it?
Anyway, my own opinion is negative.
There are many atheists who love their country as well, and if they'd been forced to swear alligeance to God to pledge themselves to their country, don't think they'd be too happy about it.
And I guess "patriots" belonging to other religions could be offended.
But of course, it only says "God", not which one....
(Though it's reasonable to assume that it's referred to the Christian one. )

USA.
Raised Catholic, now pagan.
The "under God" bit was added during the McCarthy scare in the 1950s. It has no business being there; it should be removed.
Edit: The people voting for the phrase have nothing to say?

"And I guess "patriots" belonging to other religions could be offended.

typically when God is spelled with a capitalized "G" it is refering to the Christian god.

Helldragon,
Quote: From what I've seen not many Americans are taking this poll; not that it matters; it's just weird.
Have you been paying attention to the latest federal supreme court cases? Our country is about to decide(once again) exactly where the line is drawn in seperation of church and state. They're arguing over whether sculptures of the Ten Commandments should be allowed on state/federal-owned property. The outcome of this decision may directly affect the pledge of allegiance as well.
**sigh** Some threads I create might just as well be invisible.....
