Quote: But of course, it only says "God", not which one....
(Though it's reasonable to assume that it's referred to the Christian one. )"
Indeed, or at least the Abrahamic one. Any god is one god too many for an atheist, though. And, one could argue, that by putting the nation "under" God, the pledge is discriminatory against anyone who worships a chthonic (=earth / underworld) deity. And where is God for a pantheist? The phrase not only supposes a divinity, but it posits a particular location for that divinity.
Anyway, I'm wondering where the 7 "pro" voters are.

I've always just assumed that the word "founded" was implied to precede that phrase, but I could be wrong.

I think that when people are saying the Pledge (if they choose to say it in the first place) they should be able to say whatever they want when they get there. If they want to say "under God", "under Allah", "under Shiva", "under Satan", etc., whatever.
Religious beliefs are a person's personal beliefs. As long as they don't hurt anybody, I am totally for religious freedom.
And by the way, technically there is nothing in the US Constitution that says there has to be separation of church and state.

Atheists can say "under no God", "under the un-God", "not under God", "under science", "under Sandro", etc.
Although I am not entirely serious, atheists could simply skip that part of the pledge. There is no law that says you have to say the Pledge word for word.
