I've been playing in the zone and have seen people hosting random maps.
Could somebody give me an idiots guide to setting up random maps for Heroes of Might and Magic III, version 1.4 Return of Erathia.

The in-game random map generator is not available in RoE. You'll need AB, Complete, or SoD (but you need to create a few bogus files there). For RoE you'd have to generate a random map using the map editor, but then you will have seen some of it, and that's considered cheating. So basically you can't host games on random maps until you get an expansion
