Poll Question:
Chimeras

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7681252/

Quote:
On a farm about six miles outside this gambling town, Jason Chamberlain looks over a flock of about 50 smelly sheep, many of them possessing partially human livers, hearts, brains and other organs.

So, they can now make sheep with human organs. Any organs - even brains. This brings up a whole mess of questions that may not be new, but have been seen as nothing but science fiction until now.

Consider the case of a sheep with a brain that's 100% human (they haven't made one yet, but the current rate of progress seems to suggest this as a possibility in the very near future). Will the sheep be able to think like a human? Will it have a soul? Also in the article is the idea of a creature that's 50% human and 50% chimp.

And what about the opposite of this: growing animal organs on humans. Would 'eagle eye' be as useless in the real world as in HOMM?

This is crossing the border between regular everyday Stem Cell research and The Island of Doctor Moreau...

*sigh*...

If you saw me right now, you'd notice that I have just shrugged my shoulders and replied, "hmf!"

First of all if I were you, I'd take whatever you read/hear from msnbc with the grain of salt. Of all the "non-biased" networks clashing for who's most objective I wouldn't put them very close to the top.

Now about your supposed argument; there really isn't much to it from a biological standpoint. It's not simply a matter of crossing organs. In any given circumstance involving something of this nature there are some basic considerations of importance to note:

1. Will a foreign organ be seen by its host as a foreign body or accepted?

2. Chromosome matching.

3. Physical Kineseology.

~The first, I can't remember what the technical term is called. bort would certainly know. But you can't simply go around implanting organs into new bodies. In some cases the body will treat the organ as a threat and attack it with all it's capability. I believe certain new drugs, as of very recently, have been invented to lower the chance for this to occur.

~The second, has to do with growing it inside the body of the potential doner. Remember the nifty little quizzes in school where you got extra credit for answering the difference between human and ape D.N.A.? Human and ape D.N.A. differ by less than 2%, and regardless of how close the similarities are, it is not possible to cross the two species.

~The third, is my reference to a Human-based theory. It is the theory of brain cooling. This theory attempts to explain why humans have a more sophisticated brain than the other species(please no whale brain arguments) of this planet. It goes on to say that only after a particular stage in the human evolution did we gain the ability to reason more prolifically. Apparently the human brain is kept cooler than animal brains. It also links our brain cooling with coming to walk upright standing up straight thus causing the hotter blood to flow with gravity. If this theory is true then space travel/flight without gravity would seemingly be contraindicated for humans.

...I'm no expert of course...but I am quite interested to hear more specifics from bort detailing the latest drugs that have been created to help prevent rejection of organ transplants...all within the humble confines of my limited imagination and droning personalized opinion...

The question is, why would the hotter blood "flow with the gravity", and not the colder blood? From what I remember from physics class, heat lowers density, which means lower weight. Am I missing something?

Lord_Woock,

http://www.ceptualinstitute.com/genre/falk/falkOofH.htm
Quote:
Falk (1992) suggest that because these hominids were living at the forested margins of the savanna the threat of hyperthermia did not exist and therefore they did not possess a network of radiator veins to keep the brain cool.

While lying supine, or in a quadrupedal stance, the blood flows from the brain through the jugulars. Upon assuming an upright stance the blood shifts away from the jugulars into the vertebral plexus. The shift occurs to compensate for he change in gravity which produces added pressure to the lower portion of the venous system. The function of the O/M sinus is to deliver blood to the vertebral plexus when standing erect. It is the major channel of cerebral venous drainage in an upright position. Enlarged O/M sinuses occur in all Hadar early hominids and robust australopithecines. Outgroup comparisons show this to be a derived condition (Falk and Gage 1995)

A transverse sigmoid sinus which is unsupplemented by an enlarged O/M is a primitive condition that is retained in high frequencies in African apes, gracile australopithecines (not including the Taung specimen (it may be a juvenile robust), fossil Homo and in living people who do not manifest altered skull shape due to cultural practices (Falk and Gage 1995).

The article goes on in much more detail. Check the link I posted for more information. I've always thought of it as quite interesting. Perhaps others will feel the same.
