RSF, you're quite a LOM veteran! We ought to play together...if only we had a better multiplayer service than Kali.

Those are good strategies you posted. Air is powerful indeed, but they can be frustrating to control in some instances. Fae Slingers vs Elven Archers or an enemy mage's area damage spell. Sometimes those darn fae decide to fly off to really inconvenient places during the heat of battle. Agreed, bad playing can really ruin the game for an Air player. I had to ditch Air until I'd been playing for a while.

I usually prefer other faiths over Air. I favor Water and Earth for their strength and raw power on the battlefield. It's just a shame that Water's upper-tier summoned creatures are swimming creatures. Oh, and it's fun to raise the dead while playing as Death.

I love the Parry Unit function. It's gotten me through so much.

I never knew about the parry function. I've always had trouble keeping my ground units alive before.

But I agree that water is a great faith. Their slingers are so durable I almost never have to worry about defending them. They are like infantry with a bit of range.

However I never really liked earth all that much. I just don't like slow units. I like the super fast offensive style that you get playing air.

In Homm3 my favorites were tower, stronghold and inferno. I never really liked the slower defensive towns like fortress. Just not my style.

One question though...

What the hell is Kali? And are there any other forms of online services?

Yeah, so many people didn't learn about it until much later. I had to do a bunch of reading in the manual to discover parry. Using the function takes a short while if you want to parry multiple units (since you need to click on each of them individually). The result, however, is quite good. My Dwarf Warrior Lord could be gang-attacked on all sides but would hardly get damaged at all. Even the fragile Chaos units seem to benefit greaty from parrying.

That's understandable, since Earth's slowness can be frustrating at times. I like their calvary units, though, since they are fast and become really tough at higher levels of experience. Furthermore, Riders are cheaper than the Dwarven Infantry! I usually stock my main army with Riders and leave the Infantry at home to defend.

What the hell is Kali? And are there any other forms of online services?

Kali is a program that uses Internet Protocol (IP) to connect multiple computers and allow the possibility of multiplayer gaming. It rose to massive popularity when Warcraft II came out, since there wasn't Battle.net in those days. I don't know that much else about it, but I heard that you need to pay in order to use it.

Some of the remaining LOM fans still use Kali, but others choose not to because they don't think it's worth paying the fee just to play a few games. There may have been other multiplayer services in the past, but they've all ceased to exist over the years.

I really wish that there was a free multiplayer service. It would also be nice if they might come out with Lords of Magic 2. Perhaps Heroes of Might and Magic 5 will start a revolution for a new wave of turn-based strategy games and someone will pick up the rights to Lords of Magic...

One can only hope...

There's a rumor going around the Vivendi Universal Games forums that somebody might make a Lords Of Magic 2 in the future. I forgot if was regarding Tilted Mill or some other company. We're all hoping that the rumor will turn into a reality soon.

The market for good turn-based strategy games is way underlooked. The main thing that I think is the cause of this was Blizzard being so successful with their series of RTS games. Command & Conquer was also quite successful and thus games like Homm3 and Lords of Magic were overlooked by game developers as having no potential.

It could take just one turn-based strategy game to start a revolution of good turn-based games. I personally feel that these have a greater potential, because you can do more with a turn based game, then with an RTS game.

The game have a "bug". You can pass it only with a hero at hard. At start separate hero and army, and start to fight only with hero(autocombat). Your hero will soon reach 12 level, with some artifact you are unstoppible. Then go to barracs, give expiriance to units, make 10 more heroes at level 10........Prety easy.Diferent story with mage...

Hmm, I never heard about that bug before. Personally, I'd never use it because it's more fun to play the proper way. I mean, the feeling you get after clearing out your Great Temple is semi-bliss. Man, I gotta dig up the CD and play the game again.

Hey all finally found this thread on here so hope you all are still interested in this game.

I have LoM:SE which I purchased from GoG.com and it's pretty decent.  There is one bug with using artifacts but this only requires you to exit the game then reload to fix for pretty much good.

I recently came on what I think is probably the best way to start with Life faction, which is also probably the easiest to play.

When you start choose Warrior, choose difficulty, but choose the CUSTOM button.

You see normally when you start on Medium difficulty the computer will start you off with 1 Archer, Staffman and Brownie along with 18 each of Gold, Mana and Ale and also starts your Hero with the junky artifact staff called Peacemaker (Gives +1 Atk/Def).

Instead you can use the 2252 points it gives you on Med on the following.

2x Elven Archers - Each costs 136 Points but a 3rd would cost you 386 more so only 2 for now.

Ring of Healing Artifact !!! - costs 1785 points. Usable by any Hero but Death and gives +1 Defense and +10 HP, restores HP fully after each battle AND gives 3 uses of Life spell Heal per day.

The rest of the 200 points are not enough to really get anything else so pump your Heroes starting exp up a bit, and maybe one of the Archers.

With this setup I was able to take over most of the locations within a day of your capitol getting my Archers to level 3, AND capture the Great Temple on Day 6 (just in time to get followers on day 7).

By week 3 (turn 20) I had also taken the Water Great Temple to the east as well.
