The Basics to Lords of Magic

At the start, you choose a Lord. He/she can be either a Warrior, Mage, or Thief Lord. You cannot lose your Lord or else the game will end. The Lord is essencially a "champion", a unit that's tougher than the normal troops, and kind of acts like a HoMM hero. Both Lords and their lesser champions can wield artifacts. Like troops, they can also gain experience from battle.

---

1. Liberate your Great Temple

You need to take over your Great Temple at the beginning of the game. To do this, you'll need to attack several caves in the vicinity of your Capital and take the loot. Problem is, you have to keep your guys as healthy as possible since you cannot replace them at the moment. Your Lord needs to survive, as well, or else it's curtains.

Anyway, you keep looting until you get enough gold and ale to buy a mercenary or two from your Barracks. You gotta attack the Great Temple right away, or else the mercenaries' upkeep will suck you dry and they'll abandon you if you can't pay them.

When you fight inside the Great Temple, expect a lot of baddies. Put your mercs in front of your loyal troops and have them 'Parry'. To do this, hold down SHIFT and click on one of the troops, click the Shield button, and click on that unit again. Then release the SHIFT. Do that to all your melee troops and move any missle units safely behind them. If the enemies don't charge at you immediately, lure them forward with a unit. Protect your missle units and your Lord, and you'll succeed.

2. Assign Followers to Economy

Once you liberate your Great Temple, you'll get two free champion units (mini Lords) and there'll be a Stronghold inside your Capital. You are also given 10 followers; these can be assigned to producing resources at your Capital. As long as you have your Stronghold, more followers will show up every week.

Because you're earning resources, you can drop any mercs you may have left and buy new units (you'll need to spend one follower each, though). Continue attacking surrounding caves; the experience will help your troops and Lord level up.

Have your champion units become stewards in their respective buildings. Warrior champions go to the Barracks, Mage champions go to the Mage Tower, and Thief champions go to the Thieve's Guild. When they are there, they will train future recruits so that when you finally hire them, they'll be a little more experienced.

You can also get a Mage and have him/her research spells in your Library. This takes a while, but higher level Mages research faster.

3. Expand to Foreign Realms

When you have a decent army, check your diplomacy screen and find another faith that is friendly with yours. Go find that faith's kingdom and liberate their Great Temple for them. Since they're your allies, they'll swear fealty to you and give you their Lord as an heir. Now you'll have two faiths to reign with.

4. Seek Balkoth and Destroy Him

This is evil guy named Balkoth messed up the land and is causing all this war to occur. He is the Lord of the Death Faith; his faith has many advantages over everyone else. You need to find and kill him, while keeping your own Lord alive. This isn't easy and it will take a long time to get done.

*gasps for breath*

Hey.

- Any info on the Great magic beast every Diety has ? I am sure that I remember getting a Black/Green ( walking ) Dragon and a White ( flying ) Dragon at some point.
- Is it worthwhile to send out riding mercs to find points of interrest faster..and after you have discovered some mines, berveries etc. then dismiss ?

- Anyways like I stated above, rofl it's fun to squeeze LOMSE in between NwN and Guild Wars :- )

Every faith has a powerful creature available at the Great Temple. Every faith also has a Legendary Creature (e.g. Fafnir Dragon, Lancelot). These Legendary Creatures can only be summoned once per game, as opposed to the other Great Temple Creatures (e.g. Dragon, Vampire, Pegasus), which may be summoned mulitple times. One special note is that Water's Legendary Creature, the Arachnids, can be summoned multiple times, and come in pairs.

I would recommend using the tiny 'scout' creatures from the Thieve's Guild for scouting. The rider mercs from the Barracks are much too expensive for the purpose of uncovering the map shroud. Also, these troops move farther if they are paired with a champion unit (e.g. your Lord) so you'd have to pair them with one if you want them to move far enough. Creatures like Imps, Hounds, and Brownies are more suitable for this job.

Hope this helps.

If you're playing the standard Lords Of Magic map, the Great Temple should be due north of your capital, as A_R_F pointed out. The Chaos Great Temple is brown and has a sculpture with the head of an animal.

Kinda fun, but I think it's a pretty badly made game.

It's horribly unbalanced - you can beat anything with a bunch of fully-leveled up Life Archers, or Elven, (I can't remember what they're called it's been several years since I played the game) especially if backed up by a few able heroes. If you play as Life, you have the greatest chance of winning, because Death AND your opposed alignment always have an army advantage, yet Death IS your opposed alignment so you only have one problem on your hands, and you have the best units in the game anyway. With Fire - I haven't played them much, but my brother used to very often - it's apparently highly difficult to get anywhere, even on Easy mode. Also, in the Chaos lands, interestingly, you have to fight Pegasi in your starting caverns, which come from Life's Great Temple! And you are expected to deal with stuff like that already, while other Faiths just get piddly little goblins or whatever? Whoa!

Furthermore, the computer players cheat blatantly. Once, when I was pretty close to conquering the world, someone or another just snagged the Earth Great Temple and bought themselves 4 Great Worms (Earth's Legendary Creature thing - only one is allowed to exist, right?), nevermind they didn't own the capital city, and that the building required was NOT the appropriate level (I think it was a Mage Guild level 3 that was needed?), and forget that I had already gotten the only and only Great Worm!
____________
That's the best part.

That's a strange problem. It's never been like that for me or anyone else I know. Was it a modified game? Because I think it might be possible to tweak with the encounter status and level in the map editor. There's also a Witch Cave near Chaos, but I doubt that's it. The Chaos having to Pegasus creatures in their early game definitely sounds weird. I wonder if the caves still said "Level One"...

Yeah, that thing about the AI cheating is well-known and quite infamous. I've even posted a picture around here of an AI's land army paired with some Kraken sea monsters. Sadly, there is little that can be done other than trying to beat whatever they magically throw at you.

I'm not aware of online gaming services that support this game nowadays. To play online you'd probably have to sign up for Kali. That costs money, though, and even I'm hesistant about trying it. From what I've heard, most people are content with just playing single player.

There are some custom maps on the main menu if you click on custom; there's even an editor that you can access from the main menu. I prefer the standard map, though, because it's the most balanced and fun to play. The customs that come with the game are often very hard and you'll need to play them a lot to get the feel. If you do well at the standard map, feel free to try the customs.

I'd recommend playing the Easy or Medium difficulties. The Hard setting isn't worth the effort, because it doesn't boost your score (like in Heroes). Besides, there is no scoring in Lords of Magic. So only play Hard if you want a challenge. You'll start with very little resources and an even smaller starting force.

How long is the game? I played a game that lasted between 300-400 turns. It depends on how you're doing and how much power your enemy has control of. That long game I mentioned had me chasing after Balkoth (the bad guy you need to kill) through miles and miles of open map territory. He was alone and didn't have an army anymore, so he was free to fly swiftly away on his bat. I often lost track of him (there's the fog of war) and I needed to send multiple search parties to try and locate him. It's a pretty huge map, so you can imagine my frustration when the guy kept flying out of my view. I finally got him, but that was a super long time after I originally intended to polish off.

I'm still regretting that there's no free and efficient multiplayer gaming service to support this game anymore. An allied online game would be cool right about now.

Do you currently have the Special Edition CD? It came along with an updated editor where you can place a lot of caves and dungeons. It's been a long time since I've used it, and I don't remember if you can place mines. If you do have the CD, then you should be able to find all that stuff under an Encounters menu.

The original CD had the editor where you could only edit the map layout and topography. I thought it sucked, so the Special Edition disk really improved it.

Another few things to add...

I personally think that Air has the best units in the game.

Though the fae slingers and fae thief have very few hitpoints, they have a huge advantage in good range and the ability to fly.

You might also want to note that on most terrain there are large sections of terrain that ground units cannot walk over. Flying units can sit on these parts of terrain and never get hit by melee units.

The eagles again, though they have few hitpoints are specialists at taking out enemy archers and assisting your ground units.

Air is really the best at manipulating the terrain to their advantage. They have the fastest troops in the game and they can fly. Good tactics will make up for their poor defense. However bad tactics will hurt very much and you will find your troops completely wiped out.

One more thing. I've come to find that the fae theif is able to kill all groups of marauding troops that don't have any archers. This allows you to level up your theif very soon in the game.

Another thing about champions training your units...

The higher the level of your mage tower, barracks, or theives guild, the better your champion can train their units.

I believe once your theif gets to level 8 or 9 and you have a level 3 theives guild, you can train level 5 slingers and level 6 or level 7 champions.

I once had a level 9 mage, who I put in a level 3 mage tower and I started cranking out level 6 mages.

Then I went down to the village between air and death and I had my mage build a death mage tower and I had a bunch of level 5 death mages.

This allowed me to research spells really quickly. I had the cone of cold spell at around turn 70 or 80 I think. That's the first area of effect damage spell. I've always wanted to go through and research every spell in the game just to see how well they would work.

I remember when Lord Balkoth came to conquer me, and I hired a party of 12 mercenaries. A mage, a Warrior and a Thief. Then 4 archers, 4 riders and 1 eagles. I sent them in and killed most of their troops. Then I went in with another force of my 3 strongest mages, 3 air elementals, and then a few archers and I was able to cut him off before he could escape and I killed him.
