Guide Threads

As of now, the Newcomer's forum is a bit limited in its scope, I believe. Introduction threads occasionally arise and member profile threads are being redirected there now, it seems, so that new members might know who they may meet once they begin to post in HC. Why stop at members, though?

I was thinking that it might be nice to have what might be known as 'Guide Threads' introduced into the Newcomers' forum, or, more specifically, threads that will help new members figure out a place to begin posting once they have posted their introductions. These threads, perhaps one for each forum, would outline what posting in that particular forum would entail, introduce the moderators for that forum (each would introduce themselves to newcomers in a single post), and provide examples of what a quality thread for that forum is so that the poster might have some idea of what is expected of them for each forum in which they post.

These posts wouldn't be too terribly long, for if they were, reading each of them might be a chore for those not initiated to "marathon posting", but they would convey the ideas of what posting at HC is like, kind of like a table of contents for the entire board. Maybe if choosing a place to begin posting were facilitated, there wouldn't be quite as many members who create names and then leave them without posts.

Feel free to share any comments or concerns.

I've moved my post to the Welcome subforum. Take a look if it's what you meant (if not, feel free to move or delete it ).

I was planning to make a thread with a similar idea - basically a write up of all the subforums with some guidelines to navigating through HC.

So far, other events have held my attention and kept me from doing that yet - but it is my plan to, unless of course, you want to

Excellent thread, Vlaad. That's precisely what I meant. The next step would be for the mods to post (at their own discretion, of course) a brief welcome to newcomers. This may also help break the ice between member and moderator early on, which is ideal for a community, IMO.

Also, I'd be happy to write up a few guide threads, but I think that it would be more effective if a moderator of that specific forum, one who likely knows it inside and out, did the guide thread for any given section. If securing volunteers that fit that description hits a snag, then I'll definitely pitch in wherever help is needed, but I'd rather wait for now and see who is willing to add to this idea. Glad to see at least a couple of you are interested.

Also, I'd like to take sort of a mini-poll, if you can even call it that. Should each forum simply start its own thread, or should there just be a master sticky of sorts containing all the guides in a row?

Ah, you meant a welcome to in each of the forums - I was thinking of a Newcomer Map of HC - to be hosted in the Welcomes Forum

Actually, I think we're on the same page. These would be in the newcomers' forum, perhaps as a sticky, but would be written by several different people. In fact, I imagine these would be updated often with input from moderators and members alike, but we'll just have to see. I don't even know if this'll get off the ground yet.

Pan,
your map idea would be great but I find the welcome thread not properly advertised... a new member may not notice it since it's not very obvious...

How do we make it stick out??

Well, by making it a sticky?

I agree with Shadowcaster that there should be just one guide thread (cleaned of comments - each post should be a guide for one subforum).

It wouldn't even need to be cleaned. If the posts are planned and arranged before the topic is even posted, then a Welcomes moderator can simply lock the thread and then sticky it. That's how I feel it should be handled, in any case.

So then we'll make one for each forum? And have each forum with its own?

Yep, and they'd all be located in the Welcomes forum, all on one thread. There should be a table of contents of sorts (or at least something) at the top of the thread so that each post can be located easily enough by those unfamiliar to HC.

Perhaps each forum should house a newcomer questions thread as well - this way it might help to keep new members from filling the place with old questions - and give them a more direct route to contact the mod in that forum , or any experienced member for quick help.

Then in each of the forums' stickies, we could have a link saying "ask here if you have any questions regarding that forum"

Sort of an FAQ for each forum? I like it. Of course, this all must be organized somehow...

*looks over her shoulder*

who? what?

I think a forum FAQ could help with friendliness, and also serve to make it easier to spot those "help I'm new threads" that tend to gather a little spam then roll back a few pages.

Perhaps we should discuss it over donuts and coffee then?

Member input is good too, would help us see what types of things we might need to include

List of Grievances:

1.) A free keg of beer upon becoming a hired hero.

2.) Strippers

3.) Let's see there's gotta be something else to include...

4.) Friday afternoons off.

5.) Health Care and Dental fully covered

6.) A two hour lunch break on at least one day of the week.

7.) Oh yeah and a sexy secretary to have an affair with.

Edit: I want back payments on all of this stuff after you enstate this new policy.

Edit again: Oh yeah I forgot to say something on topic

On a more serious note, I have an idea that I think would be really cool. I guess you could call it, The Buddy system. Members would volunteer to take on newcomers and answer any questions they had.

Something similar you can find at another website. I found it very helpful.

Thanks, but it doesn't work so well.

Now we have several spammers more at the WoG subforum, who read (so far) the only guide thread and probably thought that the whole HC is about WoG. They keep opening useless topics, like "H4 vs H3" ... you get the idea - the kind of topics they would normally post in Tavern, Library or Wastelands.

I guess a mandatory part of any guide thread would have to be the rules of the forum, which, in WoG's case, prohibits off-topic posting about anything besides Wake of Gods.

It would probably be a good idea to put the rules in capital letters or bold near the beginning of each guidepost (pun intended) so that they can't be missed.

I thought the forums were self-explanatory - each has a short description anyway. I don't know if there are any special rules for WoG, and it's not me who should phrase them in the first place. If you have the time, feel free to edit my thread and add whatever you think is neccessary.

I hate to say it, but it's starting to get on my nerves really; there are like five people here willing to discuss the game, and now some boy drops by and asks how he can play online. I guess he didn't even read CoC, the guide thread, not even the topic where he posted.

The worst thing is we don't have active mods in the WoG subforum: Treupp hasn't posted in a year, while Ste is a little better (I saw him in spring, I think). Don't take me wrong, it's nothing personal. I know they are great guys, but obviously too busy to do their job.

Yeah, perhaps the best way to start the guide thread is to begin with a post reinforcing the rules that apply to all forums and HC as a community so that newcomers know not to spam anywhere but the wastelands and such similar rules. This first post could also serve as the table of contents for the rest of the guide posts and would provide just a short synopsis of what each forum does (which the guide posts will expand upon).

I was thinking that Val could even write the first post, if he were willing, that is. A thread by the admin will probably draw more newcomers than a thread by anyone else would. What do you all think?
