What bugs me about this place
Wanna know what bugs me about Heroes Community? It's not the multi-account spammers.
It's not Stiven getting banned.
It's not people posting nonsense in Library.
Not the fact that every month or two someone will post a "Which HoMM do you like best?" poll.
Not even Trogdor.
What annoys me the most about Heroes Community is the fact that every now and then, some smartarse has to say that Heroes of Might and Magic 4 is a 3D game.
This is to all the people who say that HoMM4 is 3D or even "2.5D":
If you don't know a damn about what you're talking about, then SHUT THE HELL UP.
What the hell is it about HoMM4 that makes you think it's something it isn't? Oooh, lookie, all the creatures look like they're made of plastic and you don't see them from above, but it's not a side view either! MUST BE 3D!
HoMM4 is just as 3D as Age of Empires was. As in, it isn't - it's just makes a fake 3D impression using an isometric view.
Makes me wonder why nobody labeled Jazz Jack Rabbit 2 as 3D. After all, it had parallax scrolling!
Dudes. Grand Theft Auto was more 3D than HoMM4.
So either get a clue, or SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY.

The people I mentioned, foo  people who don't know a damn about what 3D is. Never bothered to remember the names. Happens often enough, just look around.

3D is defined as Three Dimensional - meaning they have Height, Width, and Depth.
That clearly has height, width, and depth
THIS however
Is 2D as it only has Height and Width
And GTA is 3D too

Wrong, 2X.
That there is a flat image. It contains a pre-rendered object, but it is a flat image and not a 3D model.
The game doesn't work with 3D models.
The game works with pre-rendered sprites.
Don't talk about things you don't know a damn about.

2X - you can draw a cube on a piece of paper, but that doesnt give it any depth.
I think this is the point Woock is trying to make.
Either that or he's perfecting his grumpy old man persona...

Well if you can't take the metaphor, can you take the fact that other people that are more knowledgable about this than you have said it's NOT a 3D image and leave it at that?

Sure, a picture may have perspective, but it is by definition FLAT. 2D.
If you want 3D paper art, look for origami, not pencil sketches.
EDIT: And why do you say that HoMM3 units don't have any depth?
I somehow managed to lay out all three axis on the picture.

if an object was created in a certain 3d program, so that it can be veiwed from ALL angles, then its 3d on the other hand if it were to have a seperate veiw from different angles because the creater of the creature drew 4 or more seperate pictures, then its 2d, the image just changes when the object "turns" the objects in h4 LOOK 3d because they were drawn very detailed, but you cant rotate the image, when u see a different side the image itself changes to another picture. on the other hand when u rotate the veiw of a 3d object ur actually rotating the image, so u can see all and any anlges including the top veiw and botom veiw
as well the object can be manipulated in any way, with the 2d game they just draw a seperate image for every movement

this is the style used in HOMM4 BUT it is only less detailed
this is what i believe woock is saying but how the hell would i know anything

The games are 2D. The pictures are 2D because you can't spin around the character and see him from all sides, you can't see the other side of the barbarian, ever. What you can see is the image reversed when he's on the opposing army. He moves, up and down (length) and left and right (width) but he never moves closer to the player.
Like in Mario for example. You can go across the screen. You can jump over enemies and fly up into the sky, but you CANT go INTO the background, you can't run in and see what's behind those funny hills with cute eyes.
That's what defines a 3D game, not that the shading in the monsters makes it look as if he's been working out.
