Tarot reading thread

Transferred from the "read this!" thread, which has been spammed by mods (oh, the horror!).

If anyone else is looking for public 3 to 5 card Tarot readings, I can do them as time permits.  My attendence at HC is sporatic at best, so I'll just post when I have time available.  Also, I'm a newbie reader, online readings are harder than in-person ones, and these readings are free.  You get what you pay for; this is entertainment only.

If anyone is looking to discuss/debate the use and effectivness of Tarot cards, please make a new thread.

General Reading for Jebus:

Okay, here is your reading layout:
From top to bottom, the positions are
1) Where you were
2) Where you are
3) Where you are going
4) What works for/with you
5) What works against you

And the cards are:

Your first card is the Hanged Man in the position "Where you were," i.e. the past.  The Hanged Man is a card of sacrifice, waiting, and spiritual awakening.  It indicates a time when your life seemed to be on hold, or in suspense.  Maybe you were thinking over a decision.  Since there's also an aspect of passiveness to this card, your time-out may not have been your own choice, or under your control.  The Hanged Man looks at everything from a different angle, which gives him an unusual perspective.  Maybe taking a step back gave you some new insight into your life, and let you see the forest rather than just the trees.

I'll note now that these themes of stepping away from ordinary life are also echoed in the Hermit in the future position.

Any of this make sense?

(You can see what I meant by each card having a "range" -- the Hanged Man is a trump, to boot, so it's supposed to indicate something pretty important and/or spiritual.)

next card...

Your next card, indicating "Where you are," is the Queen of Swords.  This is a court card; the courts' function (aside from befuddling newbie readers) is to suggest a person or personality traits.  In this position, I'm guessing personality.    The Queen of Swords has a cutting intelligence.  S/he may have been wounded emotionally -- a traditional meaning is a widow/er -- and now uses his/her wits as a weapon and a defence, possibly in the form of sarcasm.  This is the aloof ice queen.  S/he is self-sufficient and proud of his/her autonomy.  S/he values logic over sentiment, and the posture echoes that of Justice (another trump); s/he is very fair.  "Steel-trap mind" is one of his/her keywords.

My feeling is that this is you at the present time, but it could also mean someone influential in your life.

Third card: The Hermit, indicating "Where you are going."  This means the track that you are on currently.  Obviously, you can change it at will.

Your first two cards have strong elements of isolation, and the Hermit continues that theme.  Unlike the Hanged Man, the Hermit has chosen to step away from society.  The picture depicts him standing on a mountaintop.  The familiar cliche of the guru on a mountain applies here -- the Hermit lives in solitude, but he is also a teacher.  It's a lot of trouble to seek him out.  For the student who manages, however, he is a wise guide (see his lantern of light).

When this card turns up, one has to decide whether the querant (you) is the Hermit or the student looking for the Hermit.  In this case, I think the Hermit is you.  With the eye-opening experience of the Hanged Man behind you, and the keen sight of the Queen of Swords, you could be a valuable teacher.  Both the Queen and the Hermit are solitary characters, but neither is completely inaccessible.  You have the wisdom to guide others who are having their world up-ended (i.e. Hanged Man) because you've been there, done that.

Again, feel free to comment, question ect.

next card...

Next up...another court card.  King of Pentacles is "what works for/with you," something that can help you on your path.  This looks more like a someone who can help you, or personality traits that can benefit you.

King of Pentacles is "worldly success."  You can see s/he's got a lot of stuff around him/her.  This person knows how to manage and enjoy the better things in life.  S/he's financially ambitious but also quite generous.  S/he loves to indulge.  While the Queen of Swords lives in a world of ideas and logic, the King of Pentacles is practical and hands-on.  S/he's grounded and realistic.  What strikes me about this card is how different it is from the previous three.  Kings are leaders and movers, heavily involved in society.  The King of Pentacles is even more so, skilled at management, and very earthy.  Just look at the garden around the throne -- this person is not afraid to get dirty.

So from the spiritual and intellectual ether of the first three cards, we've come down to earth.  How can this person/personality help you?  The Hermit is a leader of sorts, as well.  Maybe he could benefit from some of the King's hands-on approach.  I'll just bring up the last card here, the 7 of Cups, noting that there seems to be a risk of floating away on dreams without substance.  The King of Pentacles specialized in nothing if not substance.

Speaking of that last card:  7 of Cups, your only pip (indicating everyday life situation).  In the position of "What works against you," it implies something to watch out for.  The 7 of Cups is a card of dreams and fantasies, hopes and fears.  It can indicate being scattered, having too many options, inability to choose, inability to act.  These are the kind of forces which, in a good sense, can drive a person into a Hanged-Man like suspension.  Since you've already been there, these problems can be solved by adopting the King of Pentacles' personality -- solid, focused on the here-and-now, keeping an eye on future gain but not getting lost in daydreams.

Edit: for sidescroll

General reading for Conan:
The cards are actually laid out in a star-shape, but due to scroll issues, I'll show them in a vertical line again.  This is a slightly different 5 card spread.

1) You / Your situation
2) Your challenge / Blocks
3) Advice
4) Strengths / Resources at hand
5) Probable (expected) outcome

1)
2)
3)
4)
5)

If that nude Star is a problem, I can switch decks.

Writing up interpretations...

First card is Page of Pentacles in position “You / Your situation.”  This is the classic student card.  The Pages are youthful, childlike even, and the Pentacles are concerned with the material world.  As a person, the card suggests someone with youthful enthusiasm tempered with perseverance.  This is an individual who means well, who is dutiful and sensible, but who doesn’t have a whole lot of experience.  As a situation, it suggests the beginning of an enterprise or education.  (My book also mentions messages, “good news about money and finance,” and other things of that sort.)

This card is confusing me, quite frankly.  I’ll move on and return to Page of Pentacles if anything comes up later.

I’m putting card positions 3 and 4 together:  You’ve gotten basically the worst and best cards in the deck, respectively, in these slots.

Second card is 10 of Swords in position “Your challenge / Blocks.”  As you can probably tell from the picture, this is a rather…drastic card.  It indicates a substantial blockage in your path – the failure of plans, disaster, defeat.  Something has gone seriously wrong.  This is the card of hitting bottom.

The Star, on the other hand (“Advice”), signifies optimism and hope.  The woman, completely unashamed of herself, freely pours her water onto the earth and into the lake.  She knows that there is always more where that came from.  This is also a card of spiritual calm.  As an advice card following the 10 of Swords: The 10 is dramatic, yes...perhaps a little too dramatic.  Do you really need ten swords to kill someone?  The ruin may not be as severe as it appears at first glance.  The “extra” swords (hardships) may either be illusions or they’re just ineffective.  The one good thing about hitting bottom is that there’s no further down to go.  And if you look at the background, the sun is rising and/or the storm clouds are lifting.  Keeping that side of the situation in mind – the Star’s optimism – may help you through the challenge.

An observation: The Star is a trump.  You can see the little number XVII on top.  Card number XVI in the trumps’ normal sequence is the Tower, which depicts the ruin of a castle.  I mentioned to Jebus that trumps are considered more important than “pips” (number cards).  The 10 of Swords is rather like a mini-Tower.  Both cards signify ruin, but the Tower shows a destruction going right into your soul, the cataclysmic dismantling of every illusion you hold dear.  In comparison, the 10 of Swords is everyday defeat.  So, the sequence here indicates a significant, but not insurmountable, bump in the road of life followed -– or lessened -- by the hope of the Star.

Your strengths / resources at hand is the King of Cups.  Like the Page, this card indicates a person or personality.  The King of Cups is an individual in touch with and in control of his/her feelings.  S/he's a respected leader and can indicate a father or fatherliness.  S/he's a good friend, a good listener, and a wise confidant.  S/he's sensitive but not swept away by his/her emotions (In Tarot-language, water can mean emotion; note how the King is surrounded by water, comfortable with water, but he's not actually getting wet).  Like the Star with her water jugs, the King is generous of his resources -- the book cites individuals in the "helping" professions, like clergy, medicine (good bedside manner), or counseling.

I've no sense of whether this card is representing you yourself or someone in your life.

The final card is 4 of Pentacles, as "probable outcome."  I'm confused again.    The 4 of Pentacles symbolizes holding tight, guarding what one has, and a touch of miserliness.  It represents financial security and the effort expended to keep security.  Pentacles are also called Coins -- you can see the guy grasping his special coin in a very possessive (if awkward looking!) grip.  He's got more money under his feet -- his foundation -- and on his hat, literally on his mind!  He's very stable.  Whether this is a good thing depends on whether he needs to move.

Still not understanding much about the Page of Pentacles, and the 4 of Pentacles isn't much clearer.  Coming out of the trauma of 10 of Swords, the 4 of Pentacles' security and stability is probably good, but could become stagnant if held too long.  And, not knowing how accurate the Page of Pentacles-10 of Swords sequence is -- the Page should be current and the 10 Swords either current or very close -- I can't gage how accurate the 4 might be.

Please tell me if anything here rings bells for you...especially that Page.  He's driving me nuts!

Questions are fine here, since I seem to be doing readings in lumps.  If someone wants a reading in muliple posts, just don't post questions in the middle.

I'm using a different spread for Conan's reading than I did for yours, Jebus.  There are hundreds out there, and readers sometimes just make up their own.  That's why the positions are different -- I used two different "general" spreads.  There are also spreads for particular purposes (specific advice, relationships, special occasions, etc).  I've collected several specifically for fiction-writing.

A) The question
B) Time.
C) Personal preference, what works best, etc.

You don't want a 13 card psycho-analysis spread when you've got fifteen minutes to read on "is this job offer a good idea."    A 3-card pro/con advice spread would be better.

Um, in depth?  Let's see...

I picked up my ring of cards ("binder" = one clip ring + hole-punched index cards).  I flipped to the "general" section, being careful not to tear the cards on the ring's hinge.    Upon reaching the five-card section of "general," I inspected the selection.  Elemental spreads seemed too personal, the extended time (distant past/immediate past/present/near future/distant future) seemed too predictive, and a bunch of otherwise acceptable spreads depended on having a question.  I chose from the remaining spreads based on appeal of the moment.

Happy?

at the beginning (first glance), none of it makes sense to me, exept this:

Page:
Quote:
As a situation, it suggests the beginning of an enterprise or education

It is true that I am only at the start of my career and that I have alot to learn. More specifically, I will start a new and interesting job soon of which I know virtually nothing.

but I tell you, the 10 swords it not the present. It is frightning though because it might be in the near future. Actually, the only thing this makes me fear is my daughter. I hope this card does not relate to her in any way.

But by rereading it, more things came to my mind:
the king of cups signifies father-like figure. Well ... everyone knows here that this is my present situation and one that hold a rather large portion of my life. Even if it might not be my strengh, it could be a strength to reach into to continue working hard in life to properly motivate me, being a father and all. I've never seen it this way but now it seems obvious. I can see how being a father can be a big resource.

And also the last card which signifies financial security; when I get my new job, it is indeed something that will come with it. Of that, I have no doubt.

Again, the only thing I'm wondering about is that 10 sword one. I don't have any bumps on my road and like I said in uphill times, my life is very good at the moment and everything is going well. So I really hope it's not in the near future...

Ah ha!  A new job definately works for the Page of Pentacles.  Thank you, I'll have to keep that in mind the next time the card pops up.

As for the 10 of Swords:  If this is not accurate for you, I'm glad.    By "very close," I meant something that you can already see coming.  If you're not clicking with it at all, my guess is that it's not there.    From a psychological-reading perspective (my preference), the value of a reading isn't the particular cards that come up, but how you interpret and fit those cards into your perspective on life.  Sometimes, a "difficult" card -- one that doesn't make sense right away -- can be the most helpful once you figure it out, giving new insights, etc.  And sometimes a card is just wrong.  From what you're telling me, the former is the case for the King of Cups, the latter is the case for the 10 of Swords.  So, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Thank you for letting me practice on you.

Reposting my opinion from the other thread:
Quote:
Seriously, I should note that I'm personally agnostic-leaning-heavily-towards-no in regard to telling the future with Tarot or any other divination. (I've other reasons for studying Tarot.) At best, I think you can see natural consequences of the current situation. Plus, I'm still a newbie reader. The typical 'for entertainment purposes only' disclaimer is particularly pertinent here. For me, this is just for fun.

On the other hand, other people have reported plenty of spooky incidents and eerie accuracies with traditional use of the cards. My skeptic side says belief can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, but hey. Who knows. So, if you want to look at it that way...it's your reading.  You can take it however you wish.

(Except don't take it as legal or medical advice or anything else that you could sue me for. I am not a qualified professional, etc., fill in standard American disclaimer here. )
