The greatest thing about this forum is that it is actually a huge library
I very much agree. Library, ocean, it's really big, anyway.

I'm still reading the threads which I haven't before, and the reading between the lines takes some time too.

When I had read the lines I had, I thought they mostly deal with how the star system should work and if stars were given out fairly and if some members got enough of it aso. And sometimes why someone should get one. But the threads are mostly from the perspective of those who get the stars, and not from those who read them. (And so far, I haven't found many considerations about what the red stars mean to people new to this forum. They are INVALUABLE. But frankly, for now I don't care a bit if 2% is correct.)

And up to now, it seems to me that these threads contain mainly answers to question #2 to #3. I will try to dig deeper, though.

P.S. Tigris, you've never explained what a "fekker" actually is. I can't find it in a dictionary...

well Vlaad as the worthy english teacher that you are, i think you are familiar with Jonathan's Swift Gulliver. Remember he used to invent all sort of languages familiar to those peoples Gulliver met in his journeys. IMHO QP hunters are a breed apart, so i just called them fekkers. No string attached

I'm terribly sorry for annoying all the supreme heroes, but they don't need to search for those myriads of threads which might cover the subject, because the discussion for them seems to be already over.

The Supreme Heroes doesn't get hurt by a little annoyance; it might actually do them good. New perspectives and whatnot is always welcome.

Problem is, I don't understand the joys of spamming. If something doesn't interest me, I don't bother. And the message from the spammers is intense, though not really clear.

Yeah, sorry about that. It's just that this is kinda our nature -- intense but unclear.

HC: Library or Ocean?

I'm still reading between the lines of your threads, but I thought I'd post this for now.

Before I go on, something personal: Vlaad, you are (not counting Valeriy) my favourite poster, because you are always helpful (from what I have read and experienced, that is), and I appreciate this especially because I know you have all reason to be annoyed with me (my apologies). And I like you, tigris too (as a poster), because you are straightforward and … somehow valiant (hope this fits) and also very helpful.

Some things about me: I loved both H2 and H3 and played them a lot (but very few MP, because I play on a Mac - and because it's too time-consuming). I came here because I wanted to see what people think and talk about H5 and enjoy the "fanning". And then, HC "sucked me in" and now fascinates me by its own. But actually I can't afford to spend as much time as I do right now with HC. And realizing that for this and some other reasons I can never really belong to what HC is now makes me a little sad.

Vlaad, since you invited me to read between the lines, I can't help reading between the lines of your post that you actually agree with Binabik and - according to Binabik - others that this thread is superfluous because it can only repeat what is already said, that the canonical answers are all given and that you too request me to thoroughly investigate this library before posting and even more before starting a new thread.

And since Binabik didn't answer, this is the only hint on my eager quest to improve my ways by finding out what a quality post is and even more how I am to achieve some myself.

Doing what you seem to ask is above all not so easy, you know, because - second thoughts - actually I don't think HC is a library. Perhaps it was in some way, but I fear these times are gone. And I also think it's kind of a problem for HC and I have the impression that some of the veterans who come here every day aren't enough aware of it.

First, threads are no books. They are not even purely writing, at least no more than talking. There is no book that has such authorship. Some thread titles would sound very weird for books and some corresponding contents even more so. And what would a spammed book be - a second-hand one with notes?

And even if they were, HC would still be no library. It may have been one once, like a library in a working room, where you know where everything is and find quickly by looking at the possible spots. But now it would be a city library with several rooms whose books are stored - chronologically. And which has no real catalogue. (Which in turn has to to with its not consisting of "books".)

I really think HC is more like an ocean, with powerful lighthouses, I admit, and where the adventurer is equipped with a magic map. I didn't find all your threads - but 3 dozens others instead that might cover the subject, most of which I haven't read up to now, not to speak of between their lines. If a condition to start a thread on such a subject is to find and read all that has been posted about it before, I won't be able to contribute. It may be disputable if that was such a loss, but I guess I'm not the only one.

I also understand you advice against making a new thread on something that is already between the lines of other threads. As for me, when it was clear what its topic was, I wouldn't mind a thread that brings into the lines what was up to then only between the lines of others. If this is viable, depends on the choice of the title - and the spam.

And I'm also not sure if it should be a general rule that people should read all that was written before. I began to seriously doubt this when I realized that the thread tigris pointed to is the Sir_Stiven-edict, which indeed I had already read quite attentively, but forgotten how it started and what about it originally was. It probably wasn't meant this way, but I don't like the idea that posting about quality in HC should start from it, refer to it or even depend on reading it. This is a discussion that never can be any new member's. Even if it's only half a year old, it's dark history to anyone who comes new to this forum, something that might be touching to encounter, but not something you want to live in. And besides, throwing in my two cents about quality by adding to that existing thread, thereby reviving it, is clearly out of the question. And that goes for other threads too.

In short, I suppose the growing of HC is drastically changing the conditions for posting and that some communication rules that were fine yesterday may be unapplicable tomorrow. The more HC grows, the more likely threads like this will become, and the deadlier spam will be. And all this runs with positive feedback, I fear.

And now the clear message: Given the current infrastructure of HC, imho being truly responsible can only mean refraining from spam (except were it is designated to be). If it's spammed, it can never become a book anymore. If it's empty, you can delete it in a blink of an eye, but once it's spammed, it is likely to stick, because someone like Vlaad will post some useful information even if the thread is totally useless to anyone apart from that. And think about how HC will look in a year… or two…

And finally: Mods could just silently delete empty threads after two weeks. I'm sure, everybody would be happier with that. - not counting the fact that I don't understand the joys of spamming. *sigh*

(Sorry, can't seem to really handle those smilies. But all goes with a )

[edit: Sorry, Terrje, saw your post too late. Now you know why I didn't get back to the Muslims.]
