Heroes 4, without a doubt.
The most strategic, balanced, and adjusted for the players' own style. The others are no match for it, with the awesome skills and classes system, and the fact you choose which creature dwellings to build, along with great magic system, which suck or don't exist in homm3 (and really suck in heroes 5, as far as I have seen)

my fav is HOMM3 WITHOUT WOG... (somehow i just dun like modifications on wog, it's un-HOMM-ish), agree that some of them are needed, but most just aren't. On that note, the only thing too powerful about conflux is maybe the production of Phoenixes at 4, it should be 3.

But what about Aurora Borrealis then? Isn't that an unfair advantage? And the magic university? And the artifact merchant, in ADDITION to all the other advantages?

This in combination with the other advantages (the most significantly being the phoenix-growth) does make the Conflux-castle too good, and is thereby one of the few flaws/mistakes of Heroes 3.

I have completed 124 computer games (including some expansion packs), and I have spent more hours playing (and replaying) HOMM than any other game.

Which HOMM is my favorite? I have played only HOMM III and HOMM IV, and I never play multiplayer (I don't want to lose, I don't want you to lose, and I think multiplayer gaming involves too many hassles). For years I preferred HOMM IV. Recently, though, I've been playing scenarios in both games, and now I don't know.

For sure, both games have advantages. HOMM III has upgradeable units and some great world-map spells (Water Walk, Fly, Dimension Door, and Town Gate). HOMM IV has been condemned for having heroes that move around on the combat grid, but this is actually an advantage. It is an interesting change of pace from HOMM III's heroes, who only cast spells.

HOMM IV allows you to save during combat. Depending on how you use this feature, it can be a convenience or an abuse.

HOMM IV has caravans, which helps army reinforcement. Another thing that helps reinforcement is that in HOMM IV you can move individual units around on the world map without having to recruit a hero. If in HOMM III, however, you get Town Gate, HOMM III then becomes the easiest for reinforcement, by far. But you don't always get that spell.

HOMM IV is certainly the better-looking game. Playing at the highest resolution, you get brightly colored, sharply detailed, smoothly textured screens with many interesting animations. This is possibly the best looking of any game I have played. It also has good music, some of which is sweetly moody and catchy. It is better than HOMM III's, which isn't bad.

If you play either game exclusively of the other, you do yourself an injustice.

For sure HOMM IV is one of the most unjustly condemned games ever. I think it was Computer Gaming World that gave it a very low rating (43% was it?). Maybe with its bugs, it deserved a low score when it was first released. But now it has been patched and repatched, and such a low score for it now would be radically wrong. Using the criterion of hours spent playing the game, I would have to say that HOMM IV is my favorite game of all time.

I poured many hours and years into playing 4,it's very
fun and very addictive and I couldn't get enough and I think
the storys were great and I loved reading them almost as much
as playing the game especially "the pirates daughter" that was
definately without a doubt my favorite campaign, but where have
all the pirates gone?(heroes 5) that is.
As far as the earlier installments go, I never played them(didn't have a pc at the time)except half of the main campaign of heroes 2
and that was only because I bought the heroes 5 collectors edition
and homm 2is an extra cd in the package. It was interesting, I think
they put it in mainly to show the roots of homm 5 because many
ppl were probably so used to the homm 4 style, anyway to break it all
down I would have to say now even though I hated it at first because
it was nothing like homm 4,Heroes of Might and Magic V is now my
favorite of all time games, right up there with Mafia and the
Resident Evil series.

Very tough choise this. It stands between HoMM 3 and HoMM 4 (never played the first or the second). It stands between HoMM 3's possibility of upgrading your creatures, its not-too-hard AI and cool gameplay or HoMM's 4 impossible AI, the lacks of all the cool features HoMM 3 had (like upgrading your crearures) and only six towns to choose from. Hmmmm... and HoMM 3 is the winner! .
Don't get me wrong. HoMM 4 is also a great game (fantastic music for instance) but in manner of gameplay, HoMM 3 lies me closest to the heart.

Upgrading your creatures is pretty much the dumbest and most useless feature ever. Maybe if only they'd give the upg'ed creatures both a boost in some areas, and a penalty in some areas, so different players will choose what they like more.
If you're looking for easy AI, dude, play heroes 4. The AI is dumb. Really dumb. Though that's one of the bad parts of heroes 4, so keep it down
What's wrong with homm4 gameplay?
And you "missed" all the awesome features homm 4 has. Most of them are posted somewhere in here and in the "is h4 a disastrous game?" thread, where there was a really nice discussion about things and strategies. be sure to check that out.

I totally disagree. The upgrade feature is fantastic. First of all it adds to the number of creatures available in the game, making it more imaginative and interesting. Secondly it adds to the number of strategic possibilities, for instance: At what point do you buy the upgraded dwellings? Especially when in multiplayer mode this is interesting. The best way to get a very strong army is of course to buy the upgraded dwellings as soon as possible. But when you have your friend situated in your neighbour castle, who wins? The one who uses lots of resources to upgrade, and thereby gets better creatures? Or the one who takes his chances with a non-upgraded army that he has the economic possibility to make larger at an earlier stage? Ah, the possibilites are endless.

That said, HOMM 4 is a great game, despite the lack of creature upgrades.

I like the new Heroes V best, though it couldn't exist without the previous versions, from which Heroes 3 is the best, IMO. Good old Heroes 2 is so lovely for it's fairytale-like style.

P.S. Heroes 1 is just too old () and I hate Heroes 4,
as most of the people do.

It's okay to think that the other versions of HOMM are better than IV, but if you actually HATE HOMM IV, then I can't see how you can be a real HOMM fan.

Heroes 3 is an absolute masterpiece, and is still my favorite.
Heroes 5 is a close second because I love some of the things they did and it looks slick.
Heroes 2 I'm still quite fond of, I loved some of the creatures, and I also think the best maps are in H2.
Heroes 4 I think was a step back instead of a step forward. There was so much potential and maybe too much expectation for it to be good. I however do love the music, and caravans were a great idea!
Heroes 1 I play mainly for a laugh or when I'm in a strange mood. It's neat to see the begginnings of what modern HOMM would become but frankly the game itself is dated.
Heroes: Quest for the Dragonbone Staff (PS2): This is just the worst thing heroes ever did *rolls eyes*

Heroes 4 is my favorite by far.

Mainly because of the simple fact that you can have more than one hero per army, and they participate in combat.

Also like heroes 4 because I feel I have much more control of what happens during combat.

The spells in heroes 4 are also way more effective, fun, and useful as opposed to heroes 3, in my opinion.

Heroes 3 however does have a much better variety and selection of creatures.

Don't like heroes 5 because they got rid of all the old heroes. That just pisses me off and all the new heroes are gay. No Crag Hack, Sandro, Gem, Luna, Yog, or any of the other heroes that have been carried over from 3.
