My first advice is to run System Restore and choose a date before your system went slow. Remember it might delete newly installed programs but the process is reversible.

It probably won't remove any viruses. One way to help against them could be the following:
click on "Run..." in the start menu and type "msconfig"
Now in the new window click on Startup
Here you see all user programs that are started everytime you load windows, including viruses (there are ways to prevent a virus to show up there but I think/hope they are very rare).
Now uncheck all of the ones you don't know and reboot. Good luck...

Thanks for the help. I tried the system restore just now but to my despair the box that read "Disable System Restore" was checked. No one asked me...
I also tried that startup settings. I disabled anything I didn't know, stopping an error message about an unknown thing in system32 which I suspect is linked to the virus, however the main problem still lies in that the internet is excruciatingly slow, rendering all internet using programs (besides browser) completely useless... I'm beginning to wonder if this is a symptom of the virus itself or another problem.

Ok, my last idea without reformatting would be:
- Make a new partition on the hard disk (if you don't know how, ask someone around your place to come and do it for you).
- Install there an Operating System (Windows, Linux, whatever).
- Boot with that OS and see if Internet is still slow
- If it's still slow, then most probably it's not a software thing, so reformatting shouldn't help you at all.
If not, which I believe, then you have a nasty spyware and best thing to do is to reformat.

They're like mosquitoes. They are annoying as hell and as soon as you swat one of them, there are a hundred more to take their place.
I say cut off their balls. This crap shouldn't be tolerated and the penalties for violations should be very strict. The US state of Virginia got it right with their new anti-spam law. The first two people prosecuted got several years in prison.
You realize big corporations like Microsoft for example, make viruses & malware and leave some holes on purpose (for their 'hackers' to get easily into computers with Windows) like that as well? (though not official, I wonder why?  )

Or he could simply boot a Live CD
