Yes, it's capped by HP(120 needed per pit lord) and number of archdevils(each devil can summon max 2 pit lords).

Ööööh...?? Say you have 20 dead Black Dragons and 50 Devils... then yould be able to summon 40 pitlords or did I understand you right that it would only be possible to summon 20 pitlords?

I agree with all things you have said guys, but you didn't said (or I didn't saw) that how great splash dmg mages do. I thing that is the reason why we don't want to fight with 'em cuz u are thinking about archers or skeletons u are about to lose. 
I think u all know that, but it is nice to someone mention that

Well, here is my list of best creatures strength-wise:
tier 1: scout/assassin (dungeon)
tier 2: blood maiden/blood fury (dungeon)
tier 3: minotaur/minotaur guard (dungeon)
tier 4: mage/archmage (academy)
tier 5: unicorn/silver unicorn (sylvan)
tier 6: cavalier/paladin (haven)
tier 7: shadow dragon/black dragon (dungeon)
