It seems to me that a lot of people have reported seeing hundreds of Angels and Paladins with Godric. When I played this campaign twice on heroic (patch 1.1), all I saw was about 25 angels and 30 paladins. (on week 2 and week 3)

I wonder whether this is a bug or something...?

This is not a bug. Godric's army will grow 'exponentially' the longer you wait to fight him.

The strategy I used on heroic difficulty was simply have Markal goto the Haven town where Isabel is as quickly as possible recruiting large stacks of undead army on his way, if any. Park most haven units in town, if you wish, to avoid them defecting to Godric. Let Markal visit the prison and fetch Godric's daughter and bring her back to Lorekeep. On his way, he'll be ambushed by Angels. Defeat them and you'll get the pair of wings. Fly down to fight Godric (by end of week 1). Markal at this point has SpellPower close to 50 while Knowledge sits comfortably at 20-30 iirc. The following end battle is a cakewalk thanks to Godric's destructive and raise dead spells.

Eh.. I am pretty sure this can't happen. 30-40 spell power and 10-20 knowledge sounds more reasonable (with expert enlightenment).

Yeah you are right.. I'm sorry for the terrible exaggeration
The spellpower was close to 50 in the earlier map where Markal has tonnes of artifacts that gives him boost in SpellPower.. Without any artifacts, his SP/KW was 35/14 respectively. LOL!
I've always loved to see those Implosions going off with SP~50 though..

I just played mission 5 with patch 1.2 (heroic).

I went there on Week 3 Day 6, with all units I can squeeze from both towns, and 1900+ skeleton archers.

My Markal was lv 29, with stats 19 10 24 17 (before a few artifacts) and Summoning (M of Conjuration and Life), Dark (M of Mind and Curse, Spirit Link), Attack (Battle Frenzy, Archery, Cold Steel) and Sorcery (Mana Regen, Arcane Training).

Godric was lv 24, with stats 26 23 13 12 and Light (M of Blessing/Wrath, Gaurdian Angel), Luck (Soldier's Luck, Magic Resistance), Enlightenment(Intelligence, Scholar, Graduate), Attack (Archery, Retribution, Battle Frenzy).

Godric's Academy army isn't a concern (listed below for reference):
10 Titans, ~20 Rajas, 31 Djin Sultans, 47 Archmages, 28 Steel golems, 52 Obs. gargoyle, 184 Master Gremlins.

But his Haven army was way bigger than I knew before:
95 angels, 38(?) paladins, ~500 archers and 1000+ footman.

That footman stack was a moving nuke! I frenzied this stack (sometimes failed due to the magic resistance feat) and wiped out every other Godric's stack, and this tack still had 1000+ left! Also, due to footmen's enraged ability, this stack has an attack value of 98! (and that's after -12 suffering!)

My stacks drop in one hit, no matter what! In no time I had only one stack left, and I had to keep myself alive by raising stacks here and there and flee like no tomorrow (spectres are great for this purpose).

Thanks to spirit link, with virtually unlimited mana I was able to out-run Godric's 180 mana (!) and wear this footman stack down with one phoenix after one. It was really fun! (thanks to patch 1.2 that makes heroic truly heroic)

***

Conclusion: I am glad that I had Sorcery (quick raise), Summoning (effective raise & phoenix) and Dark (spirit link). Without them I would have lost this battle.

im on the 3rd mission and ive killed everything and got all the artifacts i need apart from cyrus' but i cant convert towns to necro and all the bone dragons i recruited died so i cant complete the mission. do i need to restart?

Check your heroes' inventory and see if there is a staff of something (not the in-game name, but this is THE staff, an artifact that goes to the weapon slot.) Give that staff to Markal, let him visit any Academy town, and back out. Now you should have a prompt asking you whether to curse the town.

If not then don't worry. Hire a lot of Titans (better their cheaper counterpart), and convert them to bone dragons at your home base. (Or can you build the conversion thing in this mission?)

Necropolis Campaign Mission 5

Necropolis Mission 5

I have breezed through just about every other mission but am having a tough time with mission 5: killing Godric. His army gets so powerful and he hides in the city defenses. I take it to the last day, with a pretty powerful army, but I get wiped out each time. Any hints on how to beat Godric?

Are you saying you are getting beaten by Godric's academy forces? If so then you have some problems as after you kill those he gets reinforcements of haven forces that are lot tougher.

Can you tell us about your Markal build? When is this "last day"? What do you have and what does Godric have?

Markal is around lvl 27 I believe.  I had 17 spectral dragons, approx 50 archliches, approx 50 vampire lords, 20 Wraiths and 1000+ skeletons.  My forces get wiped out before I can get through the walls.  Godric casts deflect missile, rendering my skeletons useless.  I am not using much magic of my own, this must be my problem.

Yeah Necromancers are magic type heroes. Their spellpower is among the highest in the game.

If you look up a few posts you will see some screenshots about this last fight. The numbers you see are the Haven armies that comes after the Academy army. (The battle wad done on Day 6 Week 3 Month 1, heroic, patch 1.2). Before patch 1.2 the Haven armies are much smaller.

If you've given Godric Master of Abjuration, your best shot here is melee or destrutive magics. Do you have Summoning or Destructive magic? That will make short work of the Academy army. To defeat the Haven army is another issue, though. (see my above post for more info.)

People don't suggest that you abandon Godric for no reason. If you want to make Godric as powerful as he could be, then you also need to make Markal as powerful as he could be.

What are the most effective mass destruct spells in your opinion?

Meteor showers.

However, if I remember right there is almost no Inferno/Dungeon/Sylvan towns for you to learn high-level destructive spells in the entire campaign. You might be able to learn meteor shower from Pit Lords if you have enlightenment -> arcane intuition. Since patch 1.2 the enemies heroes on heroic all cast level 5 spells like mad. You should be able to pick up Armaggadon from one of the Wizards, but this spell is almost useless in the campaign.

I would suggest you go with Summoning. There are plenty of chances to learn summon pheonix.

Maybe it is my illusion, but the AIs usually make a priority of your weak lv 1 new hero. Try to hire a new hero in the SE town, and the AI's powerful heroes will probably come after this guy, and therefore face Markal on their way.

Give all armies to Markal and challenge them. Feed them a nasty mass slow to start, and then raise dead like crazy to minimize your loss.

***

Now, for both missions, if you can't win with Markal, then you've probably got yourself a poorly-built Markal. At this point, Markal is all about raise dead (Summoning and Sorcery). Mass dark spells help a lot as well.

I think AI probably "remember" what my tactic is... They only start to attack my base after I retry third times... and after third time the AI always send army to my beginning base...

Maybe you can send Markal out earlier? The AIs will start to come out after a few weeks, when they are finished with local business (flagging mines, etc.)

Also, close to the SE town there are quite a few undead neutrals. They should help Markal a lot.
