Diamond in the Ruff: Wastelands Goldmine

Sometimes I've found there to be simply amazing threads in Wastelands that shouldn't be deleted. I was thinking we might want to have an incentive for members to increase their quality of posting in wastelands.

It would be the Wastelands Goldmine. First thing that happens we create a sticky thread in Wastelands where people petition to put a wastelands thread into the Wastelands Goldmine.

The thread is then cleaned a bit, closed and shipped to the wastelands goldmine forum. Once in the goldmine forum, threads will be reviewed for QPs. If the members wish to continue the thread where they left off, they will create a new thread in Wastelands with a link to the original thread or threads previous.

Take for example I'M GOIN TO BED!!!!

That thread feels like HC History to me and should have been kept. It doesn't really belong in Tavern that much.

The Wastelands Goldmine Forum will help retain some HC History for the ever changing evolution that is wastelands.

And finally I think people will put more effort into the better threads that come about, so they can be put into the Goldmine.

Well one of renditions of TPAM would probably be put there. Cause in about a year a lot of people will leave and not really know much about TPAM or IM GOIN TO BED. Just threads like that mostly that should be kept around.

Also threads that are funny enough to keep around.

The thing that occasionally bites me is that most funny VW posts or situations seem to go unnoticed by the majority of members outside of the VW circle. I can't say that we're shelling out hilarious Wasteland posts all the time, but there's usually a witty conversation or two here and there. Jebus's chat stuff was funny on occasion, and now that he's gone, TNT and others have their moments. It's a little sad how most members don't seem to realize that fun stuff does go on in the Wastelands, despite it's being the spam forum.

Furthermore, I thought "Whatcha Listening To?" would be one of those threads that anyone (except maybe deaf people) can participate in. It's cool to check out what music people are listening to, if the radio stations on their side of the globe happen to be playing your favorite tunes, etc. That's why similar threads are so widespread throughout websites and forums of all kinds. Very few members post in the thread; it doesn't look very popular at all! I think it was universal threads like that which encouraged me to post beyond my original Library threads when I first found HC.

Just my thoughts.

I saw a post in some VW thread, can't remember where, but Titanium posted some comment stating his opinion and then Angelito quoted it and wrote in response.

k

That was one of the funniest posts I've read in VW in forever and most people wouldn't have a clue as to why it would be funny.

The purpose of the Wastelands Goldmine Forum would be too help keep track of all those inside jokes and fun times that make VW so unique. Much of everything is after it is deleted. However I feel that the nature of Wastelands has developed into something unique that is distinct from the days when Tavern was the popular fun forum.

I think this will encourage members to develop it more. I just feel that there's something about Wastelands that can produce threads worth keeping that simply could not happen if they were made in Tavern.

Wastelands is different, because you can post anything and not worry about spamming. And a surprisingly large amount of that spam ends up being surprisingly good.

To me Tavern has a different style than Wastelands, but I think that both have potential to produce good threads. It's just that no one takes Wastelands threads seriously, which they shouldn't. But I think we should appreciate it more and even highlight it.

Correct. I think it would encourage people to put a little extra effort into their posts in the chance that it might be kept.

Again to reiterate this, when we would normally delete the thread, it would instead be closed and shipped to the VW History forum. Any revivals for threads would be made in Wastelands and you'd provide the link to the original thread. Then if that second part is good as well, it too will be kept.

I do not think we need make somekind of Archive forum, as the valuable threads still stay in the forums they are meant for.

Extra forums would create too much extra visual clutter. Tavern is the place for keeping such threads: first the thread needs to be cleaned sufficiently, then the subject renamed with something like: "Wastelands Chronicles: THREADNAME" to distinguish it. Of course if there are any future posts there they'd have to be done with Tavern quality.

Wastelands has evolved into something more than Tavern but lower quality. It has its own unique style and throwing wastelands threads into Tavern, I just don't think it works. They will be simply forgotten hidden on who knows what page of Tavern.

Also this would be the only archive forum, because VW is the only forum where all threads are deleted on a regular basis. In other forums this is not the case.

And as for the threads being moved to Tavern, I just don't think it would be the same. People wouldn't want to post Wastelands style threads in a forum with rules that would take away from the entire idea of the thread.

Wastelands is all about posting whatever you want without worrying about quality. In a way this creates a fun and free atmosphere that generally allows us to develop many inside jokes that wouldn't happen in Tavern.

The freedom to completely change the topic whenever, the freedom to post something completely random that has nothing to do with the thread at all. I think that this would be lost by sending wastelands threads to Tavern.

The other great thing about the archive forum is that since every thread is read only, you would get an exact chronological order for the history of Wastelands. Say I want to look at some Wastleands threads from 2004. That should be around page 5. And you go to page 5 and see all the wastelands threads from early 2004.

I just see this as being something that would be very beneficial long term and would develop a sense of history for HC. Ever since Wastelands became really popular it has become a forum that everyone posts in at some point.

Ok, if you will take care of cleaning the good wastelands threads well, and locking them, renaming subject into ARCHIVE: threadname, that's fine. Just let Pandora know
