Quick combat

Just wanted to suggest to everybody to check out quick combat option.

It works differently than in HOMM3. Player sees the results of the battle and has two further options - either to accept results of the quick combat OR to replay the battle. Also comp don't drain any mana of the heroe.

Dunno how this work in multiplayer (did anybody check this out?), but in a single player player mode this speeds up the game very much. AI is not so bad at all, unless you plan to use some special really dirty human tricks , the outcome ot the battle is mostly the same.

I will try it once I play more singleplayer.  If it truly is user-friendly, might not be a bad way to speed up a multi game.

Yeah the quick combat is awesome... even if you want to fight the battle you can have it on and see how it woulda been if you just used quick combat.

Never know.. might want to take beating that army with no losses instead of fighting it out for no extra benefit.

Quick combat does work in multiplayer. IT's actually THE way to go, otherwise, you will not have enough time to fight all the battles and waste some movement. The timer ticks down even when you fight, except when troops take actions.

Thank God

This is the biggest selling point for me...time is a big constraint...when I seen how well the auto combat worked, this was all it took. I cannot wait to play online games where my opponent agrees to play his easy battles on auto...killer games in 3 hours? SOLD!!!

If count-down really works this way, those are good news.

Seems really fair - when (if..) you are thinking, thats the time of your turn. Yet if you move units very fast, you will not lose too much of the precious time

One thing though, the mana of the hero IS used during battles if the hero wound up using spells during auto.  It is a good feature, although it will allow less-skilled players to look more skilled.

In addition to autocombat, I am currently working on auto adventure map as well; where the computer actually plays for you. That will save me so mucyh time, and I will look good

hehe

Still you need skills to make your strategy vs real opponent and figure out things on the map i think this feature make Homm 5 much better than other series was.

As far as the combat time counting goes, that has bitten me in the butt several times. I've gone into combat having done everything else but having movement left and come out to my turn being expired. Since movement is everything this can become a problem if it happens a couple times in a game.

I've never been one to take long on my turns. In HoMM III, I could do 2 min turns tho I admit to preferring 4. One thing that is cool now is you have 3 mins as an option which if combat didn't count would be perfect. One thing that is never taken into account is you are at the mercy of the game. Most of the time V switches pretty quick and the video moves smoothly (My comp is above the preferred specs.) but there are times when I really have trouble getting the screen to catch up with my scrolling commands making quick chains or whatever difficult. This could be bugs but I more think it is due to lag between the server and the other player. The games appears to me to update instantly and in real time since there is no end of turn data transfer. This is also what I believe to be the cause of the bug where both players maps don't show the same information.

As for auto combat, I suggest everyone look at this and make your own judgements. I have found the comp does an decent job of battling for you but more times than not I can still get better results and just as importantly pick which troops I lose. Several times I've lost certain troops and replayed the battle so I lost the troops I didn't mind losing instead of the ones from the computer battle. Losing a bunch of Pixies beats losing a bunch of hunters any day.

i think now that combat takes time off the timer too then you hafto make turns a bit longer.  no more 3 min turns  lol.  or even 4.  i've been playin with the auto-combat and it IS great, but on some occasions (especially playing with Wizard, i've noticed) you suffer much heavier casualties than you would have playing the battle yourself.  i think the time limit has to allow for at the least 1 tough, long battle per turn.  otherwise castles that the comp does better with in auto-combat have an unfair advantage.. especially considering that wizard already seems to be a bit harder to play strongly and effectively than, say, Necropolis or Sylvan.

I play 4 minute turns, and I never run out of time, nor have I used autocombat in these cases.

Auto-combat is very effective at saving time and does a fairly good job.

I use auto-combat almost exclusively in the begining part of the game, but as my games progress and winning the battle the 'right' way becomes more important, I trend towards the micromanagement of manual combat to ensure I win 'my' way.

It's less time efficient, but more cost effective overall. ( i.e troops, mana, etc. )

I like wizard, sure first you suffer more casualties for wizard but later wizard become very powerfull, but depens what hero you pick at the start, if you pick Weilder of Fire or Gremlin Master those heroes starts very good and you wont have with them big casualties.

Yes quick combat is very good at the start,to not spend much time you can use it and later your fights will be fast but you need to command by yourself to not lose much important troops.

just get mages fast , splitt them in 5 stacks of 1 , and use their wizardry to kick every low level creature around , even without your main hero ...
of course you shall lose some troops to archers and other types of mages, but every strategy has its ups and downs
anyways , many archers have lower initiative than the one of the magis
i havent tried them with quick combat yet , hope they work the same

tried out the autocombat thing for campaigns just now.  Pretty nice... and the fact that if you don't like how things turned out after it calculates for you, you can always then repeat battle manually.  I think this should be applied to all multi games, it will speed things up quite a bit, when you don't have to do the menial battles with no casualties, and get full experience.

Two thumbs up on this feature.
