Bugs

I figured it was about time we started a thread detailing any bugs people encounter so we can all help avoid them if possible. So I suggest adding them here and also stating which map was played and which versions of the game you were using. It is possible that some of the problems may be between different versions of the game ie. the French and US versions don't play well together or something along those lines. Also this may help discover trends like if you have to reload from a save because of a bug and later can't finish the game because it becomes corrupted it could let you know if this happens early to quit the game and restart so you don't waste an entire day like my game that follows.

I've had a few great games so far and one disaster. Yesterday I played a game with Midnight most of them day that in the end we couldn't finish. We played Subterranean Treasures and tho I figure it shouldn't matter I was using the US version (I'm pretty sure Midnight is an Aussie but forgive me if I'm remembering wrong Midnight. I don't think our versions would be different but who knows.) Week 2 started as "Week of the Lich" and so the game created random stacks of liches on the map. At some point, Midnight attacked them and let them flee which immediately kicked me out of the game and told him he was the winner. Great for UBI rankings (A huge joke btw.) but not for a game.

We then tried reloading. (As a side note we had no problem loading from my autosave without e-mailing and all that. It appears that to have this work right make sure you have autosave enabled and if your opponent gets booted immediately go back to the lobby. Don't try a manual save and use that after finishing your turn or whatever cause I'm thinking that may be why others have had trouble linking up. Have the person who had the last autosave, which is done at the START of their turn, host the game and load the save.) The first time he did everything the same and sure enough it crashed again like before. After that he attacked the liches instead and everything went fine from there. Later in the game I tried the same thing with the same result. So I guess I'd suggest not allowing any "Week of the_____" creatures to flee or you may have the same problem.

Another problem we had was while I was in combat my assasins tried to shoot and it booted Midnight. This again happened until I tried not shooting the first time with them and then it was fine after that.

What this all resulted in was hours later when we both broke out we had a corrupted game. I couldn't see Midnight on the main or mini map anywhere. He could see me but I couldn't see him at all. It was sort of funny tho it meant I wasted hours of gameplay and time. I may have been able to recognize this early on though had I spoken up more. At the point he attacked those Liches I could just barely see him on the edge of the shroad. I couldn't see the liches but I did see some Horned Demons and it looked like he attacked them the turn before but they didn't disappear. I asked him during the crash if he attacked some Horned Demons and he said no that it was a Slyvan creature. With what I could see I figured I was just wrong but as it turned out I likely saw the game being corrupted instead and had I talked with him more about the subject we may have realized sooner. (Course that would have meant telling him i could see him. LOL) Try to watch for things not disappearing or changing that should be when you get views of your opponents area. It may save some wasted time.

Finally the game clock... playing both Midnight and Rychen we noticed the timer counts fast... faster than it should be anyway. Also sometimes it counts time you are in battle as part of your turn and sometimes it seems not to. Several times in all my games I've gone into battle and come out of it to the time has expired message. So either set the time to a high setting (What is the point then.) or no time limit. Losing part of your turn when you should have plenty of time left can cost you the game.

If an event causes a crash and boots out the opponent, if the person tries to save the game at that point, and continue -- it will continue to boot out the opponent no matter how many times you try to continue from save.  It happened to me 2 out of 3 games. (ie. My game with The_Wiz and Oakwarrior are both impossible to complete).  In my case both were my attacking an elemental structure on the Neighbors map -- so if I play that mapa again, I would not attack it as red, or expect the same thing to happen again.

Another game that I started yesterday, (but lasted 5 turns) my Haven town was not generating its 2000 a day income -- on warlords map.

Hey.

- I have played a few games with a friend of mine and we have experienced the counter clock bug too. And when we are on that "in battle" subject, it would be nice if you could get the ( if any ) message from team / opponant IN battle too... sorry if this can be done, just that I havent found out yet.

- As to the thing ohms/midnight -Lich bug, I experienced something similar ; I was about to enter a desert area - from grassy plains and I had the music right.then it was my turn and I entered the desert and I got music from a harbour i.e. water and seagulls ... went on for a few turn then it seemed to fix itself -- AFTER I had killed 3 stacks from week of Whale. After that we desided to save and play another time.

-P.S. Just found out that you can ( in sigle player ) click show multiplayer maps... and wham now you have several more maps to choose from, maybe it's just me that's slow

Same thing that happened with Midnight happened on the same map today with Jrholdt. This is even after I uninstalled and reinstalled this morning.... could have 3 or 4 games played by now...

I dont think uninstalling/reinstalling will fix map bugs. If a map is buggy, its best to avoid it and work with ones that are clean.  As long as I don't hit the elemental thing in front of my town as red on neighbors map, the rest of the game seems fine.

Me and Bobby tried playing and the game would always mess up when he attacked my hero... Seems like too many bugs for now. Ima stick to just playing the campaigns and stuff until a patch comes out.

I agree Ves. I just did it since the game worked fine the first few games I played and somehow other people are playing Subterranean Treasures okay. I just got done reinstalling yet again tho cause every time I started the game it kept asking for the blasted CD Key. Plus it didn't seem to be seeing my saves either. Frustrating cause 2 afternoons lost. All i want to do is play.

Subterranean Treasures

 I was wondering if you guys were locking out the computer players to speed things up. We tried a ubi server game but did not lock out the computer players and it just added to large amounts of lag.
We then tried it on LAN and the lag was gone proving the servers to be the problem as our DSL is fine for all other multiplayer games.
I did notice that even though I was player 4 yellow the game kept calling me player red though it was written in yellow a minor bug.
We too just want to play but am waiting for the stability and lag to improve.4-6 hours is fine as long as it can end with a result...win or lose.
Having said that ....the game is really ALOT of fun !

Utter frustration

Well I guess now I know why no one seems to be piling up games at this point cause I had yet another game where my opponent could see me and I was killing things and they weren't disappearing from the map. This time it was on Nieghbors. I thought that maybe the larger maps having more info were just corrupted easier. Now my theory is leaning more toward time... the longer you play the more corrupted the game gets. Even with my addiction I'm starting to be ready to quit til it's patched... I should have about 10 games played by now.

Guess I have time for one more try. Think I'll try a map that you can finish quicker.

And I was so high on the game too... might have to go back to online poker.

hey bobby, according to your finished games, it seems that the following maps were successful for you without bugs:

DIVIDED LOYALTIES
PENINSULA
THE LAND OF THE OUTCASTS

So I guess if I were you I would stick to those?  Neighbors works for me as long as I don't hit a certain structure, but I'm going to try those that you made it through.

Well Ves I can't get any map to work now. Somehow I got those first three in and nothing since. Just got off Land of Outcasts and the same thing happens every time now. The game doesn't sync right. I watch opponents "Kill" things but they are still on the map and the same for them. If you try to kill something already killed by the other guy it let's you try but won't let you actually battle. Once this starts happening just quit cause whenever you do attack a human opponent it gets stuck at the start of battle... I imagine cause the game sees different things on each side.

I have no idea why this is happening now and not before. Only thing I can think of is increased activity on the server. But games must be getting played cause people are still in there. Not sure if I will be until a patch comes. I basically wasted 3 days trying.

Perhaps it is a connectivity issue?

A few questions that pop up:
-Have your opponents opened the ports needed?
-Are they playing on 56k modem?
-Is your connection good? Meaning: Playing an aussie when you're in Scandinavia (f.ex.) = bad.

I'm just saying this cause you're a h3'er, and h3'ers aren't used to this in the way h4'ers are

I'm wondering if ubi.com accepts any type of connection. There is no way to see what ping you have to another player.. so I dunno.

Did anybody tried to install virtual LAN and then play the game as LAN game? May be this is the ubi server that is bugged not the game itself?

I think it is a connectivity issue definately. Just not sure if it is the servers or not. However I hadn't really thought about the port issue since it worked at first but I'll be resetting my router when I get home (I've been meaning to reset it anyway for a while since I outsmarted myself and can't remember the password I put on it.) to make sure everything is right on my end. Thanks for the suggestion.

For anyone who doesn't know the ports that are required for play are listed on the readme file.

If that doesn't work...

I added some more RAM to my system and have 1 gig now.. and it loads a lil better.. I almost wonder if it would get out of sync because of the lag I experienced before.

Regardless.. Ill hope for a patch to fix some issues first. The game is really fun though, just needs to work properly haha.

Patience is a virtue

Hopefully a large enough part of the community will wait for the patch-fixes that are needed, instead of yelling for blood and turning their backs on the game (as in h4 - but now there are no excuses! - It's h3D afterall )

As long as ubi doesn't go bankrupt (which seems impossible), the patches will come. Just give it some time!

I feel better now after reading the UBI forums.. almost everyone is having multiplayer synching issues. Which most likely means it isn't our problem and the patch will address that (hoping they figure out what causes it)

So just like every other game.. just need to wait for a patch to fix a lot of these issues. I still remember how bad H3 was when it came out. Most don't remember though.

I forgot to add a bug we ran it on Divided Loyalties last night. Playing red I went to attack the crypt on my side and it booted my opponent out immediately. It sounds similar to what Ves reported on Neighbors with the elemental stockpile.

I do remember the bugs with H3 but I also remember I didn't really have any major problems playing it multiplayer. The patches with it were more balancing issues and to speed up the data transfer. With H5 there isn't that wait at the end of each players turn so either there is no longer a data transfer in a block or they made it much smaller and/or faster. That suggests to me the game transfers info constantly and so when they get out of sync errors begin to pile up that only rear their ugly heads when the two sides info conflicts. But I'm just guessing so I'll stop talking out of my arse.

For the record, I didn't give up on H4 because of bugs... I gave up on it cause after playing it literally an hour or so I just plain didn't like the game. For me it didn't have the same feel as H3 at all. Multiplayer play aside for a moment H5 has the feel of H3 but definately improves upon it aside from just nice graphics. I love the game but frankly it shouldn't have shipped in its current condition. You don't see a new car line roll out at the dealership and 9/10 of them won't start cause the onboard computer software isn't working right do you? I expect bugs when something comes out but what isn't acceptible is being unable to finish 6 straight games. One here and there is understandable but 6 straight? Despite that I'll go home and try again tonight. LOL
