Fun Facts

I'll start things off:

The beaver's sexual organs are modestly tucked up inside its body, while a pare of glands in the anal area of both sexes secrete castoreum, the musky oil the beaver uses to grease its coat and mark scent mounds to delineate its territory. Castoreum was a popular medicine in the Middle Ages, said to cure ailments ranging from headaches to impotence; it is high in salicylic acid — the basic ingredient of aspirin — which the beaver ingests by dining on willow bark.

Suggestion:
Please only list a few fun facts at a time. They absorb better that way. <Also> It might be even more fun if the fun facts had some type of relevance to your personal or professional life.

Ok... here is another one then...

Guess which creature has the biggest dick (relative to its body size)?
I'll post the correct answer along with some other interesting facts about that creature after I hear some guesses. (Please, don't look for your guesses on the Internet!)

Damn right, Cabranth ! Which explains the meaning of one of Edguy's best songs ever : <<Frozen Candle>> of which I'll quote the chorus :

Burning - I am burning
Yeah - burning like a frozen candle
Burning - I am burning
Yeah - burning like a frozen candle

(It sounds better than it reads, though ! )

That's correct, William ! Both are also related to the Dolphin, whose ancestor actually walked the earth on all fours.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but that's completely false.
It's just like the misconception that scorpions sting themselves when they are surrounded by fire. Scropions are cold blooded and intense heat causes them to spasm, just like alcohol, and those spasms appear as if they are stinging themselves but they are not.
They can't die by their own poison

fun fact #1: the daddy long legs is not actually a spider.  It is also not poisonous. most spiders aren't, either; they are venomous.

fun fact #2: giant insects can't exist.  the muscles of an insect form a thin layer on the inside of the exo-skeleton, and as the volume of the insect increases exponentially, the muscle cannot move the mass.

fun fact #3: it was accepted in scientific circles that the earth wasn't flat long before columbus.

fun fact #4: marcel duchamp actually crafted most of his "readymade" art pieces himself - they were not pre-fabricated.

fun fact #5: bumblebees and hummingbirds defy the laws of physics.  By all accounts, they shouldn't be able to hover given their weight compared to their wingspan.

Are you making the distinction between eating one and getting bitten by one?

I thought the reason was because insects don't have oxygen delvery systems that can deliver to their inner guts.  Thus when the insect gets bigger the air has farther and farther to go.

Although it is my personal belief that if the bugs hadn't been interrupted by the tetrapods back 500 million years ago then they would have evolved better oxygen delivery systems and we would all be typing with feelers right now.

Yeah the scientists got it of course, but try explaining that to the medieval peasants and see what kind of reaction you get.  No wait, I have a better idea.  Come here to America and explain how old the universe is to the 30% that believes it's only 6000 years old.

BTW @ Cabranth I need to tell you that all your clever tosses are completely nullified by the fact that you are using William's avatar. (not in the strict HC legal sense but in the sense that whenever anybody sees a Titan around here the word that automatically springs to mind is "William")

Here's the scoop on daddy-long-legs from Wikipedia (abridged)

The Daddy long-legs spider, also called the Granddaddy long-legs spider, cellar spider, vibrating spider, or house spider, is a true spider and not a harvestman. "Daddy long-legs" is a name that is used for several unrelated arthropods with extremely long and thin legs, including these spiders, the harvestmen and tipulid crane flies. The Daddy long-legs spiders comprise the Pholcidae family, in the suborder Araneomorphae.

Daddy Long Legs Spider:

Harvestman:

Crane Fly (which is an insect, not a spider):

Misconceptions

There is an urban legend stating that daddy long-legs spiders have the most potent venom of any spider, but that their chelicera (fangs) are either too small or too weak to puncture human skin. Indeed, pholcid spiders do have a short fang structure (called uncate). However, brown recluse spiders also have uncate, but are able to deliver potentially fatal bites. Either pholcid venom is not toxic to humans or there is a musculature difference between the two arachnids, with recluses, being hunting spiders, possessing stronger muscles for fang penetration.

In 2004 the Discovery Channel show MythBusters set out to test the daddy long-legs myth (season 1, episode 13 "Buried in Concrete"). After measuring the spider’s fangs at approximately 0.25 mm (average human skin thickness is about 0.10 mm) the show's host was apparently bitten, although the bite produced little more than a mild short-lived burning sensation. [3] This appears to confirm the suspicion that pholcids can penetrate human skin, but that their venom is practically harmless to humans. Additionally, recent research has shown that pholcid venom is actually relatively weak in its effects on insects as well. [4]

i feel as though my world has been torn apart...I have never called, or heard called, the first picture (of the daddy longlegs) - It is only the second picture, which apparently is only a harvestman, that I have heard called a daddy longlegs.  Damn you, wikipedia, for disagreeing with what I had been taught up until now.  Given my "false" information, my fact was almost true.

in reference to the poison/venom fact, yes, the distinction lies in eating/being bitten by.  Just a personal pet peeve, but when people refer to some snake or spider being the "most poisionous" thing on earth, I usually have to chime in and tell them that there is a fundamental difference between the two - many venomous things are still perfectly edible.

come to america?  oh geeze i thought i was already here

fun fact #6: the planet earth is technically an oblate spheroid, and not a perfect sphere.  However, it is closer to being a perfect sphere, proportionately, than the vast majority of globes of the earth are.
