The Dread Pirate's Saga: The Return of the Flame

The sea shall determine your fate, that much is true...that is if you're man enough to trust it.
Welcome to the Caribbean, home to seafarers of all kinds but the most important kind being PIRATES!  I am quite sure you know by now that piracy has been around since long before you were even conceived of.  This act at times has been quite profitable to many countries such as France, Spain, and of course our beloved England.  However, many of those men who themselves are English fail to see this and have elected to rather form a colony of their own.  A colony of swashbuckling, thieving, lying, killing bastards who pride themselves of their ability to strip a ship of all its worth and leave its sailors for dead.  The King will no longer stand for this treason but because he is a forgiving and wise king he has decided to allow these beasts of men to join his army of Privateers and work solely for the Crown.  All their freedom will cost is 25% of their "earnings" while removing the Spanish and French threats that sail in hopes of claiming the new world as their own.
Now you may wonder why it is then that men such as yourselves are still needed and to that I will remind you that many a Pirate would rather stay a pirate then serve another whether it be for a good cause such as this or not.  Therefore you shall set sail, the crew of the Impaler, which was justly named for the mighty cannon you see in the front of this mighty ship.  Some of you may recognize it from the Crown's former nemesis, the Revenge.  Quite right you are.  This ship was designed for speed and the sheer ability to take out any who dare fly the jolly roger against the King.
Now raise your glasses as you head to your destiny.  TO ENGLAND!  TO ENGLAND!

The beach was his favourite place to spend his time off work, now he had a lot of it. He couldn't find a job requiring his specialty of healing and curing sick people, everywhere he went there were no openings and noone seemed to care about how good he was at it. He was really good as a field surgeon, he could make herbal cures out of scrap knowing almost everything about ancient alternative medicine. The times were hard with the ruthless pirates raiding ships injuring or killing the crew members, a surgeon could come in handy in these parts he thought to himself and wandered here to the carribean in search of a new job and a new goal in his life.

"Help someone please help my little boy!"

A woman near the water screamed for help. His first instinct was to rush to the womans help, it did not matter if she could pay him for his help, if he could really help he would gladly do it just for the sake of her kind words thanking him later.

"What has gone wrong, my fair lady? I am a doctor I could help him?

"I think it was a shark doctor, just look at this enormous gash on his tigh, oh my poor boy!"

She overreacted, it wasn't that big but as a mother she had the rights to worry for him. Pulling out of his pocket a small iron box, he placed it on the wet sand and reached for his rom bottle. He tore a small cloth piece of the kids pants and poured some rom on it.

"This will dissinfect the wound and then I will do some stitching to close it up, do not worry I can do this with my eyes closed."

He smiled at her and she for the first time smiled back at him. Many wandering spectators had gathered near the scene and were anxiously waiting to see what is going to happen next. Twelve stitches he had to lay on the poor kid but that did the job and the gash was sealed, he cleaned the remaining blood off with the cloth.

"Oh thank you kind sir! You are so wonderful, there are probably hundreds of ships which could use your services!"

She hugged him and planted a big kiss on his chick, that made him feel kind of uncomfortable but the feeling soon passed. A short dark haired man stepped out from the rest of the crowd, checked him out and spoke to him.

"Yes but only one ship can make you feel proud of yourself and stinking rich, the Impaler is one of the fastest ships ever built and we are currently looking for a crew to sail it and we could use you as our doctor, are you up for it Mister..."

"Rifter, Clive Rifter but everyone calls me "Bullseye"..."

Force Aken rested his old weary head on a rock. Not a moment of his life went by when he didn't think of those he had abandoned, of his crew. HIS crew. He saw their ghosts, he envisioned their families. They were good men, all of them. Every time he thought of them a pang of guilt struck his heart. He had escaped, but no other did. He heard the screams of his men as he swam away, he saw his pride and glory Black Skull blown into bits and pieces.

Sometimes, the ghosts talked to him. They tormented him. Not a day went by when he didn't wish he had stayed there and gone down with his ship and his men. The captian was supposed to go down with his ship, damnit! He was now banished from everything he had ever known. Piracy had been outlawed, and he could no longer show his face in his home country. He had been hunted for the last twenty years, even before his ship was sunken. The king has an outstanding bounty on his head. Many had searched and found him, but faced their deaths as well.

But no...Force was getting old now. He could barely fight off his hunters anymore. His time was coming, and he waited for it, but would not accept it. He had to have one last adventure. It was his pride that had kept him from dying. He would not die on the land. His mind and body would not allow it, he was born on the seas, he was raised on the seas, and he would damn sure die on the seas.

Force rested his head on the rock and drifted off to sleep to be tormented by the ghosts once more.

Cap'n.  Hey Cap'n Barron.  You might want to come out 'ere.

The Captain of the merchant ship Aquarius had been charting their course through a rather rough part of sea but known to be safe and free from any piracy.  Everyone on board knew that when the Captain was in his cabin he was to be left alone, everyone except the new lad.  Mr. Robert McAllen had been a fisherman most of his life just as his father had been but when the chance came to join a real crew aboard a merchant ship, he jumped at the chance.  He was strong and trustworthy but failed to understand common rules of a ship.  The number one rule of course was to respect the captain, a rule that young Robert had failed to follow earlier which was how he ended up in the Crow's Nest to begin with.

What is it now you bag of clams?

Sir, I really must ask that you stop callin' me that.

Well I wish you were a bag of clams so you'd CLAM UP!  Now What is it McAllen?

Sir, in the distance is a light of some sort.  It seems ta be movin in our direction.  I thought this passageway twas only occupied during the fall season.

It is.  Get down here boy and give me a look through that contraption.  That damn cartographer had better not have done me wrong or I swear to God almighty I'll have his balls.

Sure enough there was something in the distance.  As the ship approached the object it was clear to Captain Barron that something was not right.  That object appeared to be another ship.  A large ship.  But the most unusual aspect was the fact that this large ship was also on fire.  Nearly the entire thing was ablaze including it's sails which sparkled with glowing embers in the night sky.  As the ship continued to move forward it became clear that it's course was straight for The Aquarius.  Captain Barron dropped the spyglass which landed on the deck with a thud.  The only noise escaping the captain were mumbled whispers as he backed up into Robert and stumbled toward the bound up long boats.

Sir?  What is it?

Don't you recognize that ship boy.  The Dark Sails.  The Fiery Skull imprinted on their flag?  It's the F...Flame.  BOY!  Did you not hear me?  It's the Flame!

The Dark Flame sir?  But that sunk near two years ago.  The Flame and the Dread Pirate.  Right down to Davy Jones Locker or further if Jones didn't want him.

Well then Hell spat him back up because I'd know that ship anywhere.  I was but a young lad myself when a trading ship I worked aboard was sunk by that demon of a man.  He took everything and left no survivors except for me.  He always left one man alive so their story could be told.  I told it alright.  To every man and woman that would hear me.  And I swore I would always remember that Ship.  By God I always have and I know that's the Flame.  If you're smart you'll get off this thing before you join it at the bottom of the ocean.

What about the rest of the crew?

Wake them if you wish but I refuse to see that man's face again.

Without another word each man headed in their own direction.  The Captain for the longboats and Mr. McAllen for the bell to wake the others.  After a few sharp rings the other crew members emerged from the sleeping quarters, a few of them with guns in hand.  Many of the older members of the crew immediately saw what the Captain himself had seen and recognized it for what it was.  The Dark Flame which was said to be captained by the Dread Pirate Captain Ivan Wagner was headed for the Aquarius at a deadly speed soon to tear into it and sink it into the depths.  With no captain to give them orders the Aquarius crew was at a loss.  Some went below deck to fetch more guns while others headed for the remaining longboats.  Being a merchant ship, the Aquarius was hardly prepared for any sort of battle.  There were only two cannons both of which were on the deck, one on either side.  A few of the crew who wished to defend the ship began bringing up powder kegs and cannon balls.  McAllen decided to stay as well.  with a sharp turn of the wheel he sent the ship's front flying to the left.  Two of the defenders moved the other cannon to the right side and immediately loaded them both.  This move was useless and everyone who stayed on board knew it.  No merchant ship could ever dream of standing against the Dark Flame.  Not even a better equipped one.  However courage spoke for these few brave men.  If the captain would not defend against this horrendous act then surely someone must.  Even if it meant death.

You there at the first cannon.  Fire a warning shot.

McAllen continued to look through the spyglass as the man below fired a shot towards the Flame.  The first shot.  Robert's father had told him that men sense both fear and a lack of it as well.  Perhaps the Dread Pirate...or whomever was aboard that ship would see by this shot that the Aquarius intended to fight back.  As if in response a loud clatter of chains were heard as the Flame lowered it's anchor.  Not long after it had come to a stop.  The men could see a figure standing at the bow of the ship where a large wooden skull had been decorated in flames.  The skull's mouth opened and the figure that had been standing there raised his arm.  A loud blast could be heard echoing from the skull's mouth followed by the scream of a cannonball as it crashed into the side of the Aquarius.  McAllen stared in awe as the heavy gun fired off another blast ripping yet another hole in the merchant ship.  The Aquarius fired back with it's small guns but to no avail.  They were close but still out of range.  McAllen heard the ship groan below his feet as shot after shot was fired at them.  At one point the Flame had lifted it's large cannon and sent a cannonball right into the dock.  A few more of these and the remaining crew would be treading water.  Perhaps the captain had been right to leave.

Men, the Aquarius, she can't take anymore.  We have to abandon ship.  There's nothing more we can do but save our own lives.  There are two more long boats left.  We'll board them and head for the nearest land.

Without another word the others began untying the boats and lowering them into the water.  The Flame continued to fire but had already raised it's anchor and was heading for what was left of the Aquarius.  It wouldn't be long before the dark man who ordered the firing realized his targets were escaping.  If he were in fact the Dread Pirate back from a trip to the fiery depths then he would give chase.  He only left one man alive.

This night would be no different.  Robert McAllen could tell you that.  Out of fifteen other men who defended the Aquarius that night he was the only survivor...

Clive hated the wet climate of the carribeans, it made him sweat like a pig while only walking slowly alongside the short man who offered him a job on the new royal ship. Such a job sounded great to him but is it too good to be true? Will there be any other requirements of him, or maybe some tests he would have to pass before getting it finally...

"Don't tell me but you fellow are new here, how old are you meboy?"

It was always pissing him off, his facial features and pale smooth skin made him look twice as young as he really was. It couldn't be helped people always adressed him as "boy" eventhough he was...

"Whole 36 years old I am... And yes I am new here and actualy was looking for a job untill you came along and... You did offer me one yes? Or was it some kind of misunderstanding?"

The little middle aged man with a sunburnt face stopped in his place, a smile appeared on his face and later turned into laughter.

"Well call me Pocahontas! You 36!? You look like you are just out of med school, but now to think of it something sure did seem pretty strange the way you handled that boy, through the years only can you gain such experience like you showed me there. Believe me I had my share of scars through the years boy... I mean mate, I was stitched so many times I've lost count, just look at those 2 here, this one hurt especialy!"

He pulled up his shirt revealing 2 awefull looking scars on his lower back.

"Those 2 look far worse than they really were with all the respect, the stitching process was not done properly and with an uncompatible thread and needle. I custom make my threads by myself and could have left you with only a visual scar not like this one which you could feel through a thick glove."

The man looked at Clive for a whole minute then grabbed his hand and pulled him aside.

"Yes you were right mate, I did offer you a job on the Impaler. There are bad, really bad rumours going around that the Flame has returned from hell and is about to rule the seas once more. Just last week a trade ship by the name of Aquarius lost all of its crew but one lucky survivor, the seas won't be safe to sail untill we will take care of the Flame once and for all! Are you familiar with any way of combat doctor...?"

The Flame calls to you...
Come into the darkness Force...
Your dreams convince you, no?
Why not fulfill your true calling F o r c e...You Are A PIRATE!

Another sleepless night for Force Aken, the former captain of the Pirate ship Black Skull.  Normally his dreams are filled with ghosts of his past calling out to him.  Some are even of his old crew.  The men he abandoned.  They demand answers to questions Force cannot bear to hear.  "Why captain...why did you leave us?"
Tonight was different though.  Force had been frightened of his dreams before but not like this.  Why was he having this dream.  The Dark Flame was gone.  Sunk to hell with the Dread Pirate cursing those that would dare attack him.  It was a hard victory for the crown considering he took their own ship right out from under them.  But men can get greedy, and that was the Dread Pirate's downfall.  The man he had placed on board the Interceptor was his own trusted First Mate.  What he didn't know was that another man still remained.  A man of money.  He agreed to pay large sums of it to one Mr. Isildur if he agreed to a plan to overthrow the Dread Pirate himself.  Force knew of this plan because anything involving the Dread Pirate often or not gets spread around.  He himself was offered freedom if he raised his guns to the Dark Flame.  A bounty had been put on his head so the chance for freedom was taken almost immediately.  He attacked the Dread Pirate and his ship alongside the Interceptor but freedom was not his prize.  Once the Dark Flame had sunk to the depths, the Interceptor turned on The Black Skull.  The Skull was quick and attempted to escape but the Interceptor was quicker.  Down to Davy Jones went the Black Skull and her crew but marooned was her Captain.  So far he had been able to survive on the scraps of food that washed ashore plus the occasional fish he could catch.  He regretted what he had done but he was still alive.  That much was true.  After The Interceptor had done it's job, it's captain no longer was useful.  The man of money was in fact one Captain Stanley Hoover.  He immediately captured Isildur and threw him into the hold.  Two days later he was tried and hung.
Only Force Aken remained on Captain Hoover's list...until now.

FORCE AKEN!  COME TO ME BOY!  JOIN THE DREAD PIRATE BACK FROM THE DEPTHS!  THE FLAME WANTS YOU MY BOY!  IT NEEDS YOU!  YOUR SOUL SHALL BE IT'S PRIZE...
YOU SHALL LEARN WHY IT'S WRONG TO CROSS CAPTAIN IVAN WAGNER!

There it was again.  The second night in a row the Dread Pirate haunted his dreams.  Why him?  Was this revenge for being a part in his demise?
Force thought of these things as he watched the night sky.  If the Dread Pirate was coming for his soul he would see it...
