heroes attack (not the stat) abused? + creature stacking/grouping

Hello everybody, I'm relatively new to H5 and acquainted to the heroes series, and I've got two questions :

1. I have the feeling that the heroes attack, I meen the strike, the attack they do in combat, not the stat, is abused. Why? well because it seems random to me... ok not random but like not really depending on what your attacking. It'll do about the same damage each time to the same type of creature, but : considering opponent's not lead by heroes or lead by heroes of about the same level/etc, and considering the same attacker-heroe, of about the same level during the two fights, sometimes the attacker will deal say 190 damage to a level 5, 6 or seven, and only dela like 50 to a level 1, 2 or 3. Now I'm aware that say zombies have a good defense, but come on... how is that possible? This thread (http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=17915) sort of explains it... but that's strange isn't it? Attack damage depends only on creature and heroe level? BAH

2. Ok now concerning stacking. When is a good idea to stack, when not?
Some obvious stuff :
-Unstacking : When the creature group is so powerful (e.g. 60 Arch Angels) that it kills everything in one blow, keeping it stacked would be a waste of potential.

-Stacking : some spells are, I think, undependant of the quantity of creatures in a stack. For example Divine Favor, it just boost's the initiative of the stack, point (well it does an equivalent).

Now say I have an army of 80 peasants and a beginner heroe. To stack, or not to stack?
To answer we should first get more info on the game, like I know that the more spellcasters you have, the more powerfull/long the spell is, but does the number of creatures on which the spell is cast count? etc etc.

                                           Thanks

P.S. : for some of you having video problem's or crashes with alt-tabbing, go to your save game directory, to the user.cfg file, and edit the line concenring fullscreen (set to 0). then set your desktop resolution to your game resolution, you won't see the difference, and it might solve your problem. At least alt tabbing isn't an issue anymore

1. http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=18362

Where is the search button ? I didn't find it yet.

Edit : Finally found the search button in the banner.

After reading again your post I will say this : I think the understanding behind hero attack is that they do not want Heroes 5 to be like Heroes 4, the hero isn't a fighting unit but a support unit. That's why heroes are designed in this way. We still hope that good ideas of Heroes 4 will be back in the future.

2. The more casters in the stack the better the buff (duration), but if you have 2 stacks of casters you can buff more, it's up to you to see what is best for you. The number of units being buffed don't affect the spell.

About the damage of offensive spells, I read that you have more damage with 2 stacks of casters than one. Can't confirm that because I have never tested...

The way damage spells are calculated is by a formula such as 20 + 20 * spell power.  Let's assume you have 10 units that have 1 spell power per unit.  1 stack of 10 units would do 20 + 20 * 10 which would be 220.

But if you split the stacks into 2 stacks of 5.  Each stack would do 20 + 20 * 5 OR 120, for a total of 240 total.  Which would be 20 more damage than if they were in 1 stack.  Obviously this isn't huge but it is more damage.

Another effect is that the increase in spellpower is not linear with the stack size, as far as I know. The larger the stack, the less the overall increase in spellpower.

Thanks people!
1. well anyway the link I posted seems to say true, attack only depends on heroe and attacked creature lvl. Oh well. Ppl should forbid attacking with heroes on the net ><. question ended.

2. ok that's good info... any other unevident stuff about the advantages/disadvantages of stacking? Um can't think of any concrete questions right now... well maybe that's enough info to know how to adapt stacking to the current situation

splitting is a good idea for: casters (especially the offensive ones, it's already explained here why), meatshield units (to surround your shooter standing in the corner), units that kill everything in one blow anyway (klaus' paladins, let's say),units with specials, cause two stacks can i.e. blind two units instead of one, and fast units while creeping - to block more than 1 stack of shooters.
