Move over Tactics!!!
Well, some have said that Tactics is the ultimate skill, and the only one that matters in the Heroes IV CCG. While my Might Deck makes a strong argument to the contrary by throttlling well developed Order, Life, and Death decks that rely on Tactics, the truth is that every successful deck has included Tactics at least to some degree.
This is mainily because the spell casters rarely get to act before they become fertilizer if they don't get to cast on phase 1.
NO MORE! With the release of the Storm Winds expansion packs, allow me to introduce the Guardian Skill and its wonderful secondary skills!
Hope aligned heroes called Thanes (norse elite guards) come with the Guardian Skill, which adds 1-5 (1 for basic, 5 for grand master) to the attack scores of his units when they are retaliating. This in and of itself is not that big a deal, but the secondary skills from Guardian are Fortification, Ambush, and Impediment. Here are their Tactics killing effects:
Fortification: Adds 1-5 (1 for basic, 5 for grand master) to te defense score of the castle walls in towns the hero is defenfing.
Ambush: When the heroe's army is attaked, roll a die. On a (0-1 for basic, 0-5 for grand master) the heroe's army acts as the aggressor in the battle.
Impediment : In battles where you are the defender, on round 1 of combat, enemy stacks must roll a die. On a (0-1 for basic, 0-5 for grand master) that stack must skip its action for that round.
With these skills in play, everyone must place much more emphasis on building large stacks of troops, or getting large defense bonuses, because "shooting first" is no longer a certainty!
