noooo!! not RTS!!

last time i played an RTS online, if I remember correctly it was battle for mid eart2, i was blown away at the way these guys would just rudly come rolling over my stuff with there hordes o orcs and stuff, there i was peacfully minding my own business, trying to start something here, something i could be proud of ya know, a city with cool buildings and stuff, maybe even some higher lvl troops, get to see what all the fuss was about in the ole armoury as they was working to discover a new type of armour and weaponry that would dramatically increase my troops defense and attack in battle. was trying to make a better safer environment where my peasents could work and rais ethere famillies in peace, well it wasn't to be!! i didn't get outta week 1 when a bunch a totally unupgraded orcish thugs and some crappy dog riders , roled thru and wiped my hopes and dreams for a prosperouse community off the gaming map!! heart broken i left this totally uncreative and spectacularly quick gaming world behind me forever. Realizing I would never have the quickness of finger, due to my nasty arthritis in both hands, (that's another long story for another time ), to ever compete in the the world of build quick and rush even quicker.

PS, to this day i still not sure by what is meant by the use of the word strategy in the term Real Time Strategy, I have played many and enjoyed them a lot but in all of them it's always the same strategy, build quicker then the other guy and kill him even quicker. the person who can click quicker is always invariably the winner. the only time you ever get to use the full scope of options in any RTS is alway only in the single player campaigns where the game is geared to having you develope everything. I have nothing against peeps who play RTS's and i do stand in awe of some of the great players, just as i stand in awe of some of the great players in shooter games for there eye/hand cordination and dexterity. RTS is the realm of the thumb jockey, games like homm, civ, age of wonders, and the like are for players who truly enjoy depths of strategy.

that's my story and i'm stickin to it

pps, anybody remember the romance of the three kingdoms games? those were cool pure strategy games. or nobanaga's revenge. to bad almost none of them made it over to pc

yup, if u cant defend against a rush, either stop playing or learn how to

and all the homm games i played are like that, build quick to lvl 7 crash gaurds and rush opponent, is same formula so not sure what u mean lol.

these games not about who can click fastest, its more to do with multi-tasking, fight a battle while managing an economy. its much most complex then any homm game.

havent tried battle for middle earth, maybe i check it out

btw, if you want a pure building game where ppl will leave you alone so you can build nice things, i hear LEGO is dam fine game

I guess it's not a matter of "what is everyone able to do", but more of "what is everyones taste".

In Homm, u have time during the opponents turn to think about your strategy and plans for the next turns...so there is no need to click around like hell all the time.
But in RTS games, u have to do that during your time. So if 2 equal players (refering to knowledge of the game and "intelligence") play each other, the one who can control his mouse better will win.
That's the reason why an adult rarely has a chance in all these "sport games" on the playstation. Those kiddies click and move around with that stick like nothing....but perhaps it's just me.

RTS games mean stress....some like that kind of playstyle...others not.
I wonder who would win in a chess tournament if both players could move every unit at the same time, no matter what the opponent is doing..

Or get rushed and learn to play better. Little known info back in my homm 2 days when I took Ves' title from him, he came and took it back...in less then 15 mins. Basically humilated me in huge way but I learned how to rush from that experience.

PS. I indeed awaiting what maps of Genius JB is gonna put out

Call me a hybrid then; I like turn based (namely homm & civ) -- but I play just as much realtime (eg. Command & Conquer, Rise of Legends, Age of Empires, Battle for Middle Earth).

I also like RTS

I've been playing RTS's since they came along, am actually not bad at playing them in multi even, but they got boring fast for me in multi due to the repetition, there was an awsome RTS though, that was very different in style and strategic depth than any other i'v played, unfortunately it was not battle for middle earth 2, it was battle for middle earth 1!!
what an awsome game, to me all the great parts of the game were thrown away in the second edition of the game. the first game had totally revolutionary game play, like combined troops, they were great, you could put an archer group and combine em with a melee group so that they'd move and support each other. also they were able to pretty much stop the early rush tactics by simply allowing players to build fortifications quickly and making them way more difficult to overcome then in other RTS's, when you built an arrow tower it was very difficult to knock it down without a catapult or some creature that threw stones, this forced players to build advanced towns to win there games, also by decreasing the build times for the buildings but not for the troops they produced you took away a lot of the fast click wins. and the set town and fort designs where you could only build certain building and improvements on certain squares stopped all the RTS urban sprawl. all these features were either eliminated in the second game or severly cut back, basicly they turned the game into another version of ages of empire, only this one has a middle earth theme honestly, if you've never played it, pick up the first version of battle for middle earth, it is by far my favorite RTS, it is also the most challenging

ps. apparently the features i've mentioned above were actually hated by most RTS players. that's why they were either limitted or removed in second version,
they apparently didn't like an RTS that limitted the early rush strategy, go figure

I am sure it will.
Remember 3DOH was in the verge of bankruptcy, so they had to make the game quick.
Meaning half fast map editor creator etc.

Templates allow closed random maps. i.e. you have your start area, then can break via big guard to opponent. They also do not exclude open maps.

Other RMGs make open maps only, which are also fun, but (almost) impossible to have maps like those made by Blockbuster template.

Well my vote is A+ for Homm5.  I like the games and the randomness.  If you make everything the same on every map every time, it becomes way too one dimensional.  You find what hero has advantage for what map and then its over, no strategy, no luck.  sure there are going to be times when you are at a disadvantage, but there will be other games that the favor goes your way.  Its what can you do to try and change the luck back in your favor that makes the game fun.  Not if I do step 1,2,3,4 etc--fight and its over.  Yes there are tweaks that are needed, but now we have the map editor and things can be changed.

For everyone out there complaining about not being able to win every time or not liking the game --very simple-- stop playing and quit posting and wasting everyone elses time ranting on and on about what you dont like.  Just my two cents.

Mate, theres been peeps that have posted on this board consistently for 5 years ++...they are entitled to rant about a game they have put so much time and effort into over the years. Heroes in its forms has taken a lot of my time I know...if I wanna rant, I'll do it here.
