Wisdom Teeth?

Some of the talk in the braces topic got me thinking about wisdom teeth.

Did you get yours taken out?  How was it?  Share your experience!

I got all 4 of mine out earlier this year (around January or February).  I'm not gonna lie, I was pretty scared. My procedure was the one when they put me to sleep, so I'm completely unconscious. I talked to Arkm the night before, and he told me that it's relatively safe--only 1/100 people don't wake up from the process. And I was like WTF, MATE?!?!?! 1/100 is EXTREMELY HIGH. And then he was like, "Oh, maybe it's 1/1000 then." When said that still didn't sound good, he told me 1/10000. -_- I don't think he actually knew what he was talking about.

Before the surgery, they put 3 things on me to keep watch of my heart (one right below each shoulder and the last one slightly below my ribs on the left). They also put a clip thing on my finger. My heartbeat is 58-60 normally, and when the doctor came in, it rose to 75-80ish. And my mom said after the surgery, I was at around high 110, nearing 120.

My mom also said that after I woke up from the surgery, I just started talking a lot, but no one could understand me because I had cotton and gauze in my mouth. She said I was speaking gibberish and that I probably don't remember, but I do. I tried to ask the doctor when I can take the cotton out, and when I could eat solid food again, and what I should do if I don't stop bleeding. But I guess since they couldn't understand me, they thought it was just the sleeping gas messing with my head.

The open wounds in my mouth didn't hurt that much.  It was the stitches on the insides of my cheeks that killed.  I think my jaws were also bruised for a few days.  My parents thought it was funny that I got mad that they could eat yummy foods and I was stuck with yogurt and soup.    Yeah, that's all I remember.

My brother had his wisdom teeth removed a while back. Me and my parents joked about him getting "dumbed down".

Mine came through and I didn't even notice

I had had a headache for a couple of weeks and couldn't figure out why {the doc said it was just my back - but I didn't believe her}so I went to the dentist thinking maybe it was my wisdom teeth - my jaw was stiff too.

Anyway

The dentist was like - they have been through for a couple of years, but while you are here I can pull them out because they are too hard to reach and they will prolly rot away eventually - I think he just wanted the cash... It was just a pair of those plyer things - jiggle jiggle, YANK.  NO more wisdom

And I still had the headache...

It's gone now btw {was aboout 3 years ago }

Interesting topic

When I was a wee young lich my dentist directed my attention to a shiny new x-ray of me choppers.  He asked me to pay particular attention to the 3 (only 3, I still find that odd) wisdom teeth that were still below the gumline but 90 degrees (that's perpendicular) out from the rest of my fangs.

"Those have to come out."

His plan was to give me 2 Valium to take before my appointment and then numb me up and give me the gas and yank em.

I politely declined.  Many dentists told me the same thing over the years, but truth be told, I have an unholy fear of dentists (prolly why when Ves says jump I ask 'How high?') and my philosophy was that if it wasn't broke then it didn't need fixing.

25+ years down the road my lower right molar erupted and then sort of 'backed up'--leaving a small hole/crater between it and the tooth next to it.  "No problem, I'll just brush extra carefully to make sure the 'hole' stays clean.

Didn't work.

Next step:  Trip to oral surgeon.  IV drip (best buzz I ever had, although it only lasted about 6 seconds before I was dead to the world) and off to work he went.

My last memories were:  1)  Damn!!!  That needle stick hurt!  2)  Damn, I feel goooood.....zzzzzzzzz

My first waking memory was me sitting on an exam table in the recovery room with the nurse standing in front of me and my wife slapping the living **** out of my cheeks and saying "Tim...Tim....TIM!!!  WAKE UP!!!!  (She's a RN and has no sympathy for my pain.)

Man, I felt like I had been raped in my mouth.  Here I sat, sliced open and beaten and pried upon and she's wailing on me like she's a female Mike Tyson....

So I wake up, threaten to kill her, and head forthwith to the pharmacy to get my much needed Vicodin.  I was only supposed to take one every 4-6 hours.  Screw that.  My first dose was 3 and as much as it hurt I chewed them up before chasing them down with water because I knew it would make them take effect much sooner.

An hour later I felt good.  I continued taking them on the prescribed schedule and I still felt good.

A few days later I got brave and had a steak for dinner.  Ever heard of the term 'dry socket'?

Man, I hate dentists...........('cept you Rob )

Lichking it's good to see someone else hated having their teeth taken out... I had 5, wide awake in the chair, and my dentist was like a caveman with a club and ended up dropping one down my throat and I had to go straight to the hospital to get it x-rayed to see if the buffoon had let it slip down my windpipe, but he sent me on my way without the ability to eat or speak or a will to live, but replaced it with a raw, bleeding mouth and my teeth in a little plastic box.

problem is I still have my wisdom teeth, and my current dentist is french

LOL! I am not sure about Arkm, but if it was me, I'd definitely try to pull your leg here . I'd even make up some statistical studies and dentist conspiracies to cover the truth Oh, and I'd probably go with 1/50

My first wisdom tooth came out when I was 17. I didn't feel anything, just one day i accidentally touched with my tongue something weird in the back of mouth cavity and discovered that it was a tooth. the other three came out in the next 2 years. I heard they would rot and most probably i would have to remove them, but up to this day they are totally healthy. I'm happy that i have them :-)

Hehehe, I forgot to mention...

After the doctor came in, he held this tube thing to my nose, and I was like, "Whoa, what is that?"  And he told me, "It's okay, it's just oxygen."

Then my mom stood up, and I remember telling her to sit back down.  And then the next thing I remember is waking up with cotton in my mouth.

I guess it wasn't "just oxygen."    Those tricky tricky dentists.
