Global Warming

10 years, the ex- future president of the United States says. 10 years, and major cities like Shanghai will be underwater, and we're all ****ed basically.

Everyones psyched about it. It's the new hot topic. It's actually fashionable to act like you care about it lol.

No one REALLY cares though. I mean no ones doing anything serious about it. You can turn your air con down, and sweat a little and think you're saving the world but really it's the governments which need to take action on a large scale. The US could start by signing the ****ing Kyoto Protocol for a start... Ppl just sit there like they're watching some starving kids and go isn't tha sad? and go back to their deluxe caramel double choc ice cream under the chandelier.

The time to act is now. Yeah Yeah.

But you know Global Warming isn't proven. Well, yeah, sure, the worlds getting polluted, CO2 and all that, but not the major stuff they talk about on TV and that movie. To deny it is almost like blasphemy these days, but it's good to have a second opinion. Like the shadow minister

The ice caps melting on Greenland? it could be because the worlds heating up, but it could also be because it's a periodical thing that the size of greenlands glaciers waxes and wanes in the ages, naturally.

The temperatures of New York are 8 degrees hotter or whatever, since a couple decades ago? Well no duh. All the lights, air conditioners, electricity pumping through that city will heat it up no doubt, but when you go out into the country side, is it THAT much hotter?

I guess it comes down to the same thing> Is the world polluted? Yes. Should we try and stop it? Yes. Should we guzzle petrol and leave the lights on all night, and burn away all our fuel without bothing to invest in solar energy or other sources, before it all runs out (which is proven lol)? No!

And if one of us DOES manage to become infinite, then we're going to need a cooperative world to while the millenia away, and we don't want it to be destroyed by George Dubya and his army of Soccer Mom SUVs.

Hahahahaha--sorry, but that's my response every time I see or hear global warming.    I did a debate my senior year of high school on global warming.  My partner and I were assigned to the negative side, arguing that it's not serious nor bad for the earth.  Do we believe it?  Not particularly, but that was the side we were assigned to.  And we somehow managed to convince the entire audience except for 1 person that we were correct.

Let's see if I still have this paper...

Yep, it's here, slightly reworded.    (Keep in mind that the writing was done in HS and in informal speech format...  )

Observation 1—Global warming is not serious.
George Melloan, a columnist at the Wall Street Journal writes, “What’s causing all of this deep concern among politicians is not the fear that the earth will be incinerated next July, but the prospect that the ‘environmental movement’ may finally be fizzling out as a political constituency” (April 3, 2001). There are evidence to prove that forecasts for global warming are often misleading.  Jeffrey Salmon, the executive director of the George C. Marshall Institute in Washington, D.C. writes, “Over the last 100 years, greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increased by the equivalent of a 50-percent rise in CO2.  Given this increase, the models used by the IPCC would predict a warming of about two degrees over the same 100-year period.  But as we have seen, temperatures have increased by only about half that amount—meaning the models have already exaggerated the greenhouse effect by a factor of two.”  To confirm this, in Dennis T. Avery’s article “Global Warming—Boon for Mankind,” he writes, “In 1980, some activists claimed that global warming would raise sea levels by 25 feet.  In 1985, a National Research Council panel estimated a 3-foot rise in the sea level.  Those are frightening scenarios, but completely untrue” (Spring 1998).

Observation 2—We are NOT the cause of global warming.
Greenhouse gases and fossil fuels are attributed to global warming, but it is important to note that none of these “theories” are proven.  In fact, there are actually evidence that point in the complete opposite direction, showing that they lower global temperature.  According to Jeffrey Salmon, previously qualified, “There is no solid scientific evidence to support the theory that the earth is warming because of man-made greenhouse gases.”  He also writes, “Indeed, from the 1940’s through the 1970’s, while greenhouses gases were pouring into the atmosphere, global temperatures actually fell, and there was much talk in scientific circles about the possibility that we were headed into a new ice age.”  Moving on to fossil fuels, Frederick Seitz, the chairman of the board of directors of the George C. Marshall Institute in Washington D.C., writes, “…most of the actual rise in temperature occurred prior to 1940 when the use of fossil fuels was relatively modest.  Moreover, world wide satellite measurements show that there has been little rise, at most of the order of 0.06 degrees C, between 1979 and 1994, even though there has been a continuous increase in the world use of fossil fuels.”

Observation 3—There is not a lack of regulations.
According to the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, The United States leads the world in climate change research, spending about $1.6 billion annually.  The United States government is also currently pursuing a broad range of strategies to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the major greenhouse gas emitting sectors of our economy:
1) Electricity—Federal programs promote greenhouse gas reductions through the development of cleaner, more efficient technologies for electricity generation and transmission.  The government is also supporting the development of renewable resources, such as solar energy, wind power, geothermal energy, hydropower, bioenergy, and hydrogen.
2) Transportation—The United States is currently promoting the development of fuel-efficient motor vehicles and trucks, researching options for producing cleaner fuels, and implementing programs to reduce the number of vehicle miles traveled.
3) Industry—The United States is implementing many partnership programs with industry to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases, to promote source reduction and recycling, and to increase the use of combined heat and power.
4) Buildings—Federal voluntary partnership programs promote energy efficiency in the nation's commercial, residential, and government buildings (including schools) by offering technical assistance as well as the labeling of efficient products, efficient new homes, and efficient office buildings.
5) Agriculture and Forestry—The Federal government is implementing conservation programs that have the benefit of sequestering carbon in soils and offsetting agricultural emissions of greenhouse gases.
6) The Federal Government—The Federal Government has taken steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy use in Federal buildings and in the Federal transportation fleet.
7) The National Energy Policy—The National Energy Policy includes new recommendations to promote energy efficiency, conservation, increased use of natural gas and renewable energy, and the new construction of nuclear capacity.

Is that not enough regulations?  United States government climate change programs are achieving real results, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 66 million metric tons of carbon equivalent in 2000. United States carbon intensity—the amount of CO2 emitted per unit of GDP - declined 15% from 1990 to 1999.  All the above information were updated October 22, 2001.

To quickly summarize, global warming is made out to be a lot more threatening than it actually is.  Misleading forecasts exaggerate temperature rise and provide false information on future increase of sea levels.  Fossil fuels and greenhouse gases such as CO2 are blamed for global warming, even though none of this has been proven.  Many people do not realize that these gases are actually necessary for survival.  Jeffrey Salmon, previously qualified, writes, “The warming effect of all these gases [carbon dioxide, methane, and other gases] combine maintains the average global temperatures at a comfortable 65 degrees F.  Without the greenhouse effect, the average temperature would be about 10 degrees below zero, and the earth would resemble the planet Mars.”

Secondly, the Kyoto Protocol is very expensive and won’t be very effective because US only emits less than a third of the earths greenhouse gases.  Salmon write, “According to the Department of Energy, for the U.S. alone, even a 20-percent reduction in CO2 emissions would require a carbon tax forcing the price of electricity to double, oil prices to triple, and the cost of coal to quintuple.”

Now here is a little on how global warming can actually be beneficial in many wonderful ways:

Sub-point 1—Warmer temperature means happier people and lower death rates.
Dennis T. Avery, previously qualified, states that “Between 900AD and 1300 AD, the earth warmed by some 4 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit… Written and oral history tells us that the warming created one of the most favorable periods in human history.  Crops were plentiful, death rates diminished, and trade and industry expanded—while art and architecture flourished.  The world’s population experienced far less hunger.  Food production surged because winters were milder and growing seasons longer.  Key growing regions had fewer floods and droughts.  Human death rates declined, partly because of the decrease in hunger and partly because people spent less of their time huddled in damp, smoke-filled hovels that encouraged the growth and spread of tuberculosis and other infectious disease.”

Sub-point 2—Global warming means a decrease in disasters.
Avery writes, “The smaller the temperature difference between the North Pole and the equator, the milder the weather.  Most of the warming, if it occurs, will be toward the poles, with very little increase near the equator.  Thus, there would be less of a temperature difference that drives big storms.”

Sub-point 3—Warm climate can help our economy.
Thomas Gale Moore, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, explains, “A few services, such as transportation and tourism, may be more susceptible to weather.  A warmer climate will lower transportation costs: less snow and ice will torment truckers and automobile drivers; fewer winter storms will disrupt air travel; a lower incidence of storms and less fog will make water transport less risky.”

Sub-point 4—Global warming will create more arctic ice.
Avery explains that “The polar ice caps depend on snowfall, and polar air is normally very cold and dry.  If polar temperatures warm a few degrees, there will be more moisture in the air—and more snowfall, and more polar ice.”

Sub-point 5—Global warming will mean more land.
Moore states that “The amount of arable land in the world today is principally restricted by cold and desert… with extreme global warming… the world’s area of arable land would triple.”

Just a little bit of global warming can do so much for us.  What would you rather have?  Less deaths, less disasters, and a better economy, or dangerous weather, less money, and bad economy?

And if you read that entire thing, you either really care about global warming or have nothing better to do.

I think I've read somewhere (Science of Discworld I believe) that given the planet's history, we should be getting another ice age any time now. Given this, global warming would actually be more of a countermeasure, not a threat

I think it is proven that burning fossil fuels released CO2 into the atmosphere though.

Even if it weren't we're using fossil fuels alot faster than it's being created and soon it's going to run dry.

The intresting thing is that global warming should be happening anyways.

Not so say it would naturally happen this fast, we've sped it up quite a bit.

True, we should do something about the pollution and whatnot, but despite what the governments say or do, large polluting companies will always find another way around little things like laws, they meen nothing to a determined person with the talent to find loop-holes.
For example, there is no planetary law against pollution, so you can just skip on over to the States, or Mexico or something and keep burning stuff there (or whatever your doing).

*whoops, off-topic*

Anyways, we should be worried about Global Warming, but nobody's going to anything about it 'cause everyone in high-power like money, and's not willing to spen it.

I almost didnt understand what global warming was... If you have a bathtub full of ice cubes when they melt the level doesnt change. But the ice caps are not submerged in the frozen areas of the world

I then imagine most of the icecaps protruding above the water are massive.

The problem with global warming is that every country is leaning towards the American lifestyle. Look at Mexico for example. It used to be a peaceful country until Americanisation took place. The same thing is happening in Australia right now as I speak. To make matters worse, we are the only country to have NOT signed the Kyoto Protocol.

Damn America with their Hummers and their fossil fuels. Can't we just use old cooking oil instead?

I think that global warming is something that is happening, and will continue to happen if people wake up and start doing some major changes. Quite a few of us are unconnect from the earth. So many people are able to identify cars and computers, but unable to tell the difference between a hawk and a falcon.

Not to say that people aren't doing anything, there's good stuff going on, but more people need to contribute.

There is a lot of evidence for global warming. I could go on and on, but I think you'll prefer if I just give you a website that has good, reliable info:

http://www.climatecrisis.org/

I also recommend the movie: "An Inconvienient Truth".

I have a hypothetical question.  What if we found that, after all these years, cell phones were the real cause of Global Warming.  Ignoring the people who don't think it's real, what would you do?  What do you think the government would do?

I read a great fictional novel by Michael Cricthon called State of Fear that mainly focused on "Global Warming", "Greenhouse Gases", "Climate Change", and more importantly, on the media's use of unverified information to sensationalize anything.

I totally recommend this book to everyone, as it will make you second-guess many things that you believe to be "true", simply because it makes sense or because you heard it on the news. I studied Communications at university and always believed myself to be above the influence of the media due to my schooling. But when I read this book and more specifically, this part, it showed me how gullible I (and most of the world) really am.

Not only that but well also be hitting an ice age sooner then we think.
Maybe not in our life time but it was expected at least in another 10 thousand yrs.
It may be sooner then that.
Stasrting from even as small as polluted L.A to the Ozone lair from the sun.
Even some countries has gotten colder then usual, right Angelito .
Currents are different. For yrs we hit mass extinction.
Dinosaurs.
Mega Fuana.
The last ice age.
In the last ice age they animals & people were adapted to the cold weather.
Of course with the help of being hunted or territorial they became extinct.
We cant handle another Ice Age.
