Efreet Sultan is awkward in that it's a creature you want/don't want dead. If they don't take damage, their ability is wasted. If they do, they die. Inferno is the town of Fire magic, and efreets are immune to fire (Frenzy, Bloodlust, Slayer, Sacrifice).
Efreet Sultans are purely offensive creatures and are very good at that - they are the fastest level 6 unit and the only one from this tier which can cross the entire battlefield in one turn and attack (under certain circumstances the Wyvern Monarchs and the Scorpicores can do it as well but this depends on the opponent's formation and they are still slower). Their damage is good, their overall survivability is adequate and they can take on most of the other level 6s if needed. The Fire Shield makes them excellent kamikazes if you need such for whatever reason. Efreet Sultans + Rashka + Arch Devils pretty much ensures that the opponent will have no shooting archers. A very good creature in general, one of my favourite.

Pit Lord is also awkward for similar reason, you're counting on one of your units dying. The ability is complicated to use optimally.
As mentioned - the so called "demon farming". Look at it this way - you find neutral dwellings/towns which produce something useless to you (and you also have Imps...). You recuit it, you let it die intentionally and you turn it into Demons. Optimally this is performed with a secondary hero while the primary one fights for experience and artifacts - with good control, the Arch Devils and the Efreet Sultans can deal with 90% of the things on the map on their own without any losses even if you are not using spells. Provided that your scouting is good, this strategy can ensure that you will at least have a very big army when you finally have to meet the opposing primary hero. It's expensive but it's worth it.
Quote:
I do not know if this counts, coz I have not tested, but has anyone tried mass curse or weakness? Since they would greatly diminish an opponent's damage success
They can more than halve it actually but generally they are less useful than Expert Slow/Haste, especially the former. It's good to lower the opponents damage capabilities but it's even better to make sure that some of his creatures won't deal damage at all. Actually, due to these two spells, many battles are entirely based on a sequence of "mass slows/mass hastes" which dispel each other while you try to trick the opponent.

Efreet sultans are good especially in final battles. But in lesser battles they're vulnerable to attrition, and their ability doesn't help. That was my point. They may work if you pair them with devils, but then I often play on Hard difficulty.
Hmm, it seems that Efreet Sultan is the perfect creature to combat Dread Knights. Can't be cursed, and if double damage triggers it will make Necropolis player cry.

As for slow/haste thing - at least Expert Slow doesn't override Prayer, which still grants a speed boost. More of a workaround than a counter, but helps.

Sorry to say, but this isn't quite true. Especially in earlier in middle part of the game, sultans are awesome units. You can split them and attack shooters without losing anything. You can use them for armageddon attacks and you mostly have the initiative in battle due to their speed.

Yes, they are excellent creatures and not really "vulnerable to attrition" - for a fast offensive unit they are reasonably tough (look at the Scorpicores for example - inferior in almost every aspect but just as expensive and their dwelling costs a fortune). Actually they are one of the reasons why Inferno becomes a really powerful faction after a while, if used correctly. The Efreet Sultans + Arch Devils is the fastest top tier combo overall which makes sure that you can safely handle almost all walkers on the adventure map, especially the slow ones, only with them. Sure, the Devils do most of the work but the Efreet Sultans are a perfect bait and can easily deal with isolated stacks on the battle map. Against archers there is no better combo.

Well, one would expect a level 4 spell to give you better results than a level 1 spell. Not really true in all cases but this is one of them. In any case, it is much more likely to get Slow than Prayer and Earth Magic is a must unlike Water Magic.
