Poll Question:
Must Read Poll, Blind Games for ToH

Hey Everybody!!
You tired of playing the same old maps??
Tired of Studying maps??
But dont like random maps cause of the relics and spells in them??? Like spellbinder hat, tome of air, dim door, fly, etc..
Dont like the cartographers and grail?
Hate all the restarts? I know do..
Well I have been discusses this problem and what if toh had 40 or 50 random maps that had been edited by myself or someone else for nice starts and other stuff.
Just think about the possiblities for a second,
unseen maps with:
no game winning relics!
no grail!
no restarts!
no studying required!
Just Fun!!

Ok so I know there are some problems. Mainly, cheaters how do you stop them using these maps to get free wins?? Saved games are a possiblity, but those have lots of there own problems too. Susggestions are welcome.
The only sure fire way is to play with people you trust and know. I know that I usually just play with my group of friends, because they are the most fun

Plz Vote if you think this idea has any worth and if you would actually use the maps.

Responses:
Yes, I would love to get some edited random maps
No, this idea suxs ToH maps rule, I can play the same one a hundred times
Maybe, Toh maps are cool, but I see myself getting bored with them.
Good Idea, but I wouldnt use them.

2vs2 random maps

Now theres an idea, for all you 2vs2 fiends out there
I know it is one that gets my juices flowing. Cause CC remix is way too over played. My last 2 games on it havent been as enjoyable as they use to be....

The people that edit each map would put their names in the map specifications, as well as list what arts/spells are available in the map. So that you know if there is much of a point building that lvl5 mage guild or not.

One more thing
STOP VOTING FOR #5! that was a joke, sheesh u people trying to make my head explode??? Isnt it big enuff already??

Btw...I voted the first option....but there would be a stack of work involved....and every completed game may have to be sent in, plus viewing the map in editor. A third party host would solve this prob but.A great idea though

I agree with rychenroller you would need a third party host or the map editor would make it all for nothing.

Good idea...but

Sounds like a good idea, but also sounds like a bit of work. Is it? I am not sure how much time is takes to edit a map to remove and add the neccessary artifacts and such.

Personally i have had much luck with un-modified random maps, maybe its just me.  I would like to try out some random maps edited to be more fair.  But for now i will continue to play Random as is.

I think both blind maps and random 2v2 are a great idea. As far as stoping cheating in blind maps, maybe TOH powers could be of some help, are all the reports kept from this seeason, maybe other seasons as well? This way you can see if your opponent has played the map b4. Nothing to stop them from looking at editor or playing solo, so maybe a tourney is not the answer, just get some of us blind map lovers together and play

Got one volunteer so far

Ya the work would be lots but with some help it wouldnt take that long to have 40 maps, i think anyways. I wasnt thinking of use them in a special tournment just for regular toh. Yea stopping cheaters is impossible for this idea. Unless someone handed out maps as people wanted them, sigh even more work. Plus that person would need a database with a record who has played each map. I think this is a little much personally. Wait a minute, aint this the Tournment of HONOR??? If we cant trust our opponents here, where can we? I know I know ur all laughing....but I am serious. Sure maybe the games you played on these maps, you play only against someone you trust. I know I generally only play against these type of people anyways. Or maybe with enuff support the first thing would be possible.
Heck I dunno, but I know I am willing to do some work. Mr Kerebeos, the guard dog to hell, signed up for some work I sure hope having 3 heads means he can edit 3 maps at once
Well i dunno know about u guys but i think this could be really good, and lots of FUN!! Thats why where here right?

good idea!

I was actually thinking of the same idea myself Jex but it does seem like a lot of work.

I think either a patch or new h4 option should be to download maps(random included) during the pregame map header screen. this would ensure that no one had edited maps to anyone's advantage.

Ready when you are JEX :)

ok,i guess there is no need to repeat myself, by saying how good this idea is,in fact it could be the solution to the dilema RANDOM or CUSTOM maps. The only tricky issue here is the realisation of this idea, and how we can reduce cheating as much as possible.i dont think we can  totally eliminate cheating, but at least we can try to make life difficult for cheaters.I have few suggestions although ,we will need the help of a programer ,and TOH's approoval of course(above all).
1)First create a reserve of 40 or 50 (edited) random maps.
2)it would be nice if we could download these maps randomly(without the possibillity to determine which one exactly)from toh by submiting both opponents the handles of both players (like we do,when we report a regular toh win).
3)in order to avoid the accumulation (and studying)of maps ,there must be some short of penalty for guys who only download and not play the maps.So i suggest that both players who have agreed to download a blind map in order to play a TOH game,if they dont report a win or loss on this map, they should loose some points.
4)every 2 or 3 months the maps must change.
5)i guess its obvious that if they are no volunteers to help ,the blind map project will fail.

Grandmasters, TOH Random Map Page

Last seasons' grandmaster finals were run similar in that fashion, a randomly chosen map with a 3rd party host viewing all throughout the game, opponents not knowing the map until they started.  But the holes in this were simple, a player who dropped could view the map quickly; so we enforced that 3 drops mean instant forefit.  Weak online networking code for homm3 doesnt help this situation much either; but something like this will be applied to the next grandmasters (all colonels+ would be invited to play in it, opening late July.)
To create entirely new maps say out of a random map generator, then play with them, you know there will be baby complaints and disputes 'oh, he had 3.5 gold more on his side than mine, oh, i had a pack guarding he had a few etc...'  Especially in a heated moment in such a high level setup like grandmasters.

***But the idea jex put forth is sound, and if there is enough volunteers to create these maps, id be happy to add a 'random' map list on TOH, calling them random map 001 down to 999 if we had so many.  Then players who meet online can just randomly grab one and have some fun.

Excellent for people with RoE only

I like playing random maps, but since I have only RoE it's not easy to get someone with SoD to host me on random. That's why I think this is an excellent idea - to have many random maps available for people with RoE only. Maybe the simplest solution to reduce cheating will be for the guest to suggest 3 maps or so and the host to pick one of them. Or as many said, play with people you trust. I look forward to that.

I think blind, random maps are an excellent idea. I honestly don't do well on random maps becuase of luck factor. However playing a blind map eleminates most of the problems we seem to encounter in Heroes. No more rules!!! Honestly people if it's not cheating then it should be legal. No more people saying "sorry I don't know that map.... although I'll be happy to play you Hour Glass 2 wich I failed to mention I have my first 20 moves already memorized and have won about 200 games on... did I happen to mention that"? Hehe a little extreme... in most cases... But I think that blind, random maps will be a great addition to TOH and help end all the bickering as long as people are willing to play them.

Go for it!

Go for it Jex!  Make the maps, we can post them as Ves has said above.  Let's do it (you and whoever of course is what I mean - I am not opposed to helping either if asked).  People who like the maps can play them as they like and will have to be honest with each other as anything else in TOH.  Some players will download and look at all these maps I am sure, but constantly worrying about cheaters should not deter us from the fun of our playing.  Cheaters are unavoidable no matter the parameters.....only thing that can really be done about them is to make constant saves and review if you felt someone cheated you.  I don't know how cheaters enjoy playing, but they are around, and many don't consider looking in the editor a cheat the same as clicking the day window to see how many towns your opponent has.

I think some stipulation about not being able to whine or an acknowledgement that the map might be somewhat unbalanced needs to be qualified to avoid people complaining and "cat fights."  They need to know the game may not be "fair," but that is always a possibility with random.

I think telling people about whether or not to build a level 7 guild or any other kind of guidance is not really what playing a random map is all about.

So, let's get some maps up huh?    We can correct troubles as they come along once we get something going imo.

People seem to like this idea....

Hey all!
Nice to hear that people seem to interested by this idea. I had almost given up on it. As nobody voted or posted in 3 days.

I have begone to make some maps prolly got maybe 10 or so. I have just been making Large with and without underworld, as well as XL without underworld. XL with underworld is way too much work. I read alot of peoples thoughts on the other thread about how people thought the maps should be edited. everybody has their own thoughts on this subject. So let's hear some

What i have currently being doing is removing oblisks and cartographers, and replacing them with chests and resources.
I have been checking boxes/scrolls, and removing/changing if they give out the best spells in the game. Like a boxes that are the tome of air/earth, I have sometimes removed the whole box, sometimes removed some of the spells, but not all the good ones. Sometimes left them but increased the # of creatures guarding the box/scroll.

I also have been changing the location of starting towns so that people dont meet in the first week, or if they do. It will be with scouts. And they wont be forced to go for their opponent but have other directions that they can go. As well as tryed to keep lots of portals away from starting castles. Mainly the portals that connect one human with like 3 cpus. As this can either kill a human or give a huge advantage to one side.

I have also been removing artifacts, like what is done in most our favorite seen maps. However I havent been listing what artifacts have been removed.

As for dim door/fly, I have been taking it out more than I have been leaving it in. Why? Well in my experience dim door has always been a game winner on a small map, or a map where you can see your opponent's main castle over a mountain ridge. I have been leaving it in on some of the bigger maps where you guys are not just separated by mountains. I know all the hardcore random fans dislike this idea. However the reason behind this idea. Is to hopefully bring some players that only play the same maps over and over again, into playing blind maps. Plz remember this when you critize my actions.

I got question, the random generator sets castle types in the editor. I have been mainly making both players the same castle types. Should I tho? Would you guys prefer random castles? If so what about external dwellings than?

As for versions, I only play with RoE so all the ones I currently made have been for it. Maybe I will make a couple for Ab too.
