Good job dude, this is extremely useful for begginners in modding. I knew most of this part of tutorial (everything except adding abilities), but that's where my knowledge ends. Can't wait till you add how to change creatures' skins (like how to change the colour of liches' robes, dragon scales and stuff like that).

okay. Vokail help me at creating chreature textures (changing textures will modfinder the chreature's color, like the Beta Version peasant mod's texture only makes the peasant formal and his suit green). Send me a program what I can edit tga files and I can save fiels as tga! If you don't have it, sorry.

Excellent.
There was talk about making a MODDER's Guide (Wikipedia style) but it hasn't surfaced yet. This is a good start.
There are some typos and a few things that could need further explaining. I'll return to that later.
This topic should made a sticky for now (one might want to rename it to make it a general guide to modding - no offence!) - and then others could add further features of How-To in later posts (thus: Keep chat at a minimum). It would also be really cool if we right in the begining made an index of what's included (like: 7.3: How to add abilities. Page 3, post 17.) etc. In that way, this might actually come to work as a extensive and fairly-easy-to-use manual.

Yep ... that's essentially the same information. But nice to have it on this board as well. And we could add more.

If I wound can make tga files (textures for Hereos 5) with jus paint, I wound make great modells!
I was at once made great modells (playable models for our character) at GTA (Grand Theft Auto) Vice City! I downloaded many modells and I mixed them, but I made modells myself! And it can be doend becuse they was bmp files and not tga! If I wound have a paint like promgam (just the simple paint, no more) what I can edit tga files and save them as tga, I wound a great texture maker! Can someone tell me a program wha I can work with tga files too?

Adobe Photoshop, but it's expensive...
Unless, of course, you want to take a stroll on the other side of the law and torrent it

It's a really nice initiative, and a helpful post, and I agree with Alcibiades' suggestion.
Before I sticky the thread or anything else, though, I'd like some clarifications on how it can be so close to EliteKill's "Modding for Dummies" thread on the Round Table, posted on January 1st, and pointed to by Vlaad:
http://www.celestialheavens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5395
EliteKill's thread is really well done, and deserves respect. While it leaves much place for other guides in the same spirit, I don't want to support a rip-off of someone else's work, without the original author's explicit consent. VokialBG, I appreciate that you made some effort to change some aspects and examples to bring more of yourself into it. And we'll continue to build upon it.
So, here's what I'd like to see:
- an explicit approval from EliteKill to reuse his work
- a clear acknowledgment of his work as source material
Other than that, we can all add original details and bits in the part already published, in particular where something is missing, like:
* .pak is a renamed .zip
* Correct paragraph 3.1.5 about Magic Elements (these were used in beta, now they're random and change each week)
* explain the SpellPoints1, SpellPoints2 tags
Of course, those are just ideas. Feel free to contribute what you know.
Lastly, back to the stickied thread idea, here's what we'll do once the point above is clarified: we'll keep this thread for comments and suggestions, and all the interesting material will be copied into another stickied thread, with a summary, to keep the info clean and accessible.

what I'm eager for is the power to change textures.
Which is an incredible ability that is not being used to full extent. I've been looking at the creature models, and there's more to them than you'd think. The fire around the Fire elementals? full models, ripe for editing. (Eg, depeding on how it works, you could do anything from making the fire green to making little hearts fly up around the Elemental. )
Also, the robes of the Wraiths have simple flaping things, not full models, but just planes with transparency textures. It wouln't be hard to make little knives on the end of the robes.
the posibilities are like books: there's no end to what you can do with them, if you think hard enough.

The skill IDs can be found in Curio's Cheating Guide:
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/heroes5_cheats_skills.shtml
as other lists of IDs that can be used for scripting (with their numeric values). Just browse the guide.
It should be checked whether the IDs are the same: the lists in the guide are meant for scripting (the values are specifically defined at the start of a map for the lua engine). While the values you use in the xdb files are recognized by the H5 binary. I suspect that it is only a coincidence that they are the same.
In fact, the SPELL_RUNES_* IDs can not be used in scripting (or through the console). Their numerical values can, but the constants are not redefined in the lua starting scripts.

As you may have read in the specific thread, the modding wiki is now opened for this kind of work.
VokialBG, I see you removed all you tips and tricks here. Feel free to add them to the wiki where they can improve the guide.

Hello there.
I appriciate for your respect to me and my guide. You can disturbute it anywhere, but please include a credit. About the wiki page, I think it's really good and would like to add more to it. I know my uide may have some mistakes or unclear information, and that's what I need the better modders to help me with. VokialBG, I appreciate your ideas with the skill ID's, especially because I have never tried to change them .
Until later,

That depends. If you just cicked "Next" in the installation, than go to My Computer, than C, than Program Files, than Ubisoft, and finally Heroes of Might and Magic V. That's your directory
