DOS Games

Have you ever played any DOS games that you would like to share here?

Well I do, and here are some of them:

Shadow Warrior

A shooting game, made by the same people who made Duke Nukem 3D, but I much prefer this game.

Slightly better graphics but not too much better, excellent gameplay, and it is just fun to play.

I also like some of the things that your character says when you kill some of the enemies.

There is ofcourse a parental mode, which can turn blood on/off, and I choose to have the blood on.

Parental mode when switched on, reduces the blood effects, although there is still some blood, there just isn't as much, and when you turn parental mode off, that is when thing's start to get interesting and really good.

You can rip off a head of one of those zombie things (guitarguy might know what I am talking about), with your sword (personal fav wewapon), and you can also get your sword and cut them in half.

A really good game if I must say so myself, and it is just really fun to play, over and over.

Unfortunately, I never got the chance to play this game with multiplayer, but I imagine it would have been excellent fun.

Blood

I never got the chance to buy this game, but I wish I had.

This game is awesome, and is also a shooting game.

I only had the chance to play the demo, 3 levels, and the last one was on a train, which was my personal favourite.

It has good graphics and excellent gameplay aswell.

I like how you can shoot the heads off the creature's, and then you can kick them around, like a football.

It is really a good game, and yes this one ofcourse has blood effects in it.

I also like when you can set one of the creature's on fire with your flare gun, and they make the sound's screaming in pain, especially with those creature's on like the first level who speak very weirdly, and are in cloaks, that is pretty funny.

Overall a really nice game, but never got to play the full version of this game, which is quite a shame really, cos it was very good as a demo and would have been wayy better as a full version.

Crusader: No Remorse, and Crusader: No Regret

These were probably my favourite game's all of time.

These game's absolutely rocked.

It had superb graphics, and excellent gameplay, and it also boasted some good techno music aswell, techno/electronic stuff anyway, but I really enjoyed listening to the awesome music while I was taking out the enemies, was very very very fun to do that.

Unfortunately I cannot play this game anymore, which is a great shame, because I would love to play this game just one more time.

Some of the weapons that you can have are really cool.

You can shoot your enemies and they can turn into green dust, or you shoot an enemy and they turn into a skeleton kinda thing, because all their skin has been taken away, and you can ofcourse shoot a rocket launcher or missile launcher and blow them up or set them on fire.

You can also freeze them with the freeze gun (dunno it's actual name), and you can shoot them and it makes them dissappear into nothingness, or you can just shoot them with a pistol and they are dead.

It is a very fun game to play, and this is one of my personal favourites that I was playing when I was younger.

Duke Nukem 3D

This one is an awesome game, alright graphics and good gameplay.

It is like Shadow Warrior, only, in my opinion, not as good.

It has the blood effects in it, and you can save girls in it too, supposedly they are HOT

Some of the things that Duke Nukem says are pretty funny like:

"What are you waiting for, Christmas" - Happens when you don't do anything for a long time.

This was one of the first shooting games that I got, and I really enjoyed it, first played the Demo, and then got the full version of it, and it was definately worth it.

I enjoyed this game alot, and although it may not be as good as Shadow Warrior is, it still deliver's fun and good enjoyable playing.

Warcraft 2

Yes, Warcraft 2, probably my most favourite in the series (beats world of warcraft imo), I really enjoyed this alot.

It has good graphics, and good gameplay, and it is one of those better games that I have played, and I got this quite a while ago aswell.

You can play as either Orc's or Humans, but I personally prefer playing as Orc's.

Some of the things that some of the units say are pretty funny like:

*Humans*

Peasant: "Helloooo"

Swordsman (cannot remember name): "Stop clicking me"

*Orcs*

One of the special units, forget name: "Slice and Dice"

Death Knight "yesss massster"

This game really is enjoying to play, and although I have not yet played this with battle.net, I am sure that it would be a good game, because for me, for singleplayer, it is an awesome game to play both graphics wise and gameplay wise.

Really good game in my opinion.

Settlers 2

A good DOS game, which was pretty fun, for the amount of time it lasted.

Although I didn't play this game as much as I would have liked to, the experience that I did have when I did play it was good.

It has good graphics, and good gameplay.

It is a pretty fun game to play, and I particularly enjoy watching the villager's or whatever you call them, do all their daily activities, constructing buildings, and I think I even saw some of them skipping with a skipping rope, and reading and all that, might have been my imagination though.

But it is a pretty good game, and it is a pity that I cannot play this game that much anymore, simply because it does not work on this system anymore (damn windows 2000, cannot play any of these DOS Games under DOS anymore).

But it has good gameplay and good graphics, a good game

Tyrian

A good old game, that my dad actually got from Canada infact (Canadians rule!).

This is a different kind of game then the ones that I have listed above, as this one is a top down view flying/shooting game.

I found this game to be very very very enjoyable.

Has great music, good graphics, well very good in my opinion, and very good gameplay.

I remember the times that I had playing this, and the amount of time I had playing it.

It was highly enjoyable, and it is sorta a shame now that I cannot play it, although I think I can play Tyrian 2000, but I still prefer the good old Tyrian full version that I have.

This game is a really fun game to play, and I have had this one for a very long time indeed.

Good music with it aswell, that I particularly liked listening to as I was shooting down the enemies.

Many weapons that you can buy aswell, like Laser's, Rocket Laucnher's etc etc, not so much Realistic weapons because ome of them are quite weird, but I still like them very much.

Really enjoyable, and I only wish I could play this one again, with music working and all that.

Good game

Raptor: Call of the Shadows

Another Top Down View Flying/Shooting game, although this one isn't as "Cartoony" as Tyrian is, this one has much better graphics, good music and good gameplay aswell.

I do not know what I preffered more though, although I loved Raptor and Tyrian very much as games.

This game, has much better Graphics as it is not as Cartoony, and it has more Realistic Weapons, such as machine guns, Missile Launcher's, Laser's and all that kind of stuff.

And one really cool thing called the Smart Bomb I think, and you launch it, and when it blows up, every enemy craft on the screen will blow up aswell, not including your own ship though.

This Game, you can destroy thing's on the ground, such as bridges, houses, car's, and all that.

There are evn some enemies on the ground, like tanks, boats, etc etc.

There was some of the same stuff in Tyrian but you couldn't destroy bridges and houses and all that kind of stuff, although there were gun turrents and all that.

Although this game has good music, it isn't as good as Tyrian is, and with every game I have, I would like some good music with it, instead of having to play a game which has the most tedious music that I have gotta listen to, but that is just me.

All in all a very enjoyable game, very good graphics, and good gameplay.

Good game to play in my opinion.

Hocus Pocus

Now a different kind of game again, but this one being a 2D Side Scrolling game.

You take on a Wizard named Hocus Pocus (obviously ), and you have to defeat some Dark and Evil Wizard (forget name).

There are 4 worlds that you have to travel through, although you can pick anyone that you want, but it is better if you complete them in sequence (world 1, world 2, world 3, world4).

Within the Worlds there are about 9 or so level's, and they progressively get harder (sort of), and at the end level you have to defeat some kind of boss creature.

Although not having the best graphics, the music and the gameplay are good, which is a pretty good thing.

Most 2D game's will not boast the best graphics, but Hocus Pocus is pretty damn good if I must say so myself.

Boasting some pretty challenging thing's, like trying to avoid swords coming out of the ground, and having to jump over lava, and all that, it does make for some pretty enjoyable playing.

All in all, a good game, with good gameplay, good music, and average graphics (not the best, but not the worst either).

A good game to play

Now it is your turn, what are some of your favourite DOS games that you have played, and give a little story about it, what it is about, and what is good about it and all that.

Looking forward to your responses

I don't think I ever saw most of those games. Out of those I only played Warcraft 2, Settlers 2, and Duke Nukem.

But there were games that took months of my life:
King's Bounty (surprising isn't it?)
Gobliiins - now that was an incredible quest. Lots of bugs but even more fun. I got it again not long ago and I'm enjoying it all over again.

Actually there were so much great games back then that I can't single out anyone of them. I'll think about it and add something later.

What exactly is Gobliiins?

And King's Bounty yes that is a good game.

I got that included with my HOMM3 Millenium Edition Set, and I found it on one of my disc's last year sometime, and I was quite surprised and I didn't know what it was at first, but then I started playing it and found it to be a pretty fun game.

Although not as good as homm1, homm2 and homm3 ofcourse, but still this is what Started it all, and this is a pretty good and enjoyable game.

Not too good graphics though, and I do not think it had music did it?

Gameplay was pretty nice though, although the battle's were kinda weird, but they didn't annoy me too much.

But I kinda liked and probably still do like that game.

Warcraft2 was my first contact into the fantasy "realtime strategy" world. It was about the same time "Command & Conquer" became famous. I liked WC2 better coz of its fantasy character. And btw...u should click all those units more than once...they change their sayings then. For example the boat....after the 5th or 6th click, the captain will start to puke..
Sheeps explode after the 10th click..
and some more....
Before I played WC2, i played Dune2, which was the ancestor of C&C.

Yeh in Warcraft 2, I often clicked them numerous times, some said some pretty funny things, and yeh the sheep exploded

And I forgot about Command and Conquer, that was an awesome game in my opinion, that was a really enjoyable game.

I was little when I played it, and I often had trouble completing the demo mission, but I finally succeeded after many attempts and won that mission, and I was pretty proud of myself aswell.

Thanks for your input Angelito, always appriciated

Dune2!!! That was my firsyt RTS and I love it till this day.

Gobliiins is kind of a puzzle game where you have 3 little goblins (or gnomes I'm not sure) who are on a quest to save a king from a vodoo sorcerer. Each one of the goblins has different abilities: a fighter who can hit things and climb ropes, a magician who cast seemingly random magic and a jester who can carry and use items. The game is histerically fun and funny. I remember me, my older brother and my father sitting around our PC trying to understand what the heck are we supposed to do next.

Some more DOS legends that I remembered:
Centurion - sort of a strategy game where you play a roman general trying to conquer all of the west and central europe along with north africa. Now that I think of Rome: Total War kind of reminds of a very complicated version of Centurion.

Mech Warrior - the FIRST Mech Warrior! What could be better then driving a big mech? Being in charge of a team of big mechs!

Death Track - probably the only racing game that I really loved. Not only do you drive some weird car it is also loaded with tons of different weapons!

And of course the legendary...
PRINCE OF PERSIA - I don't think I need to say anything about this one, the name says it all - the first prince of persia game.

Ahhhh yes Caesar 2, I loved that game, but unfortunately never got the full version of it, just the demo but it is an excellent game.

I decided to get Ceasar 3 and that is a superb game, but I think that Zeus: Master of Olympus and Pharoah are better, but they are not DOS games

Well they're all extremely similar, it just depends on which culture you like the most. Although there are a few notable differences - in Pharaoh for example you must keep all gods equally pleased or they will ruin you and in Zeus you only get bonuses from them (unless of course they're coded to be against you in the scenario)...

I remember Raptor.  It was a fun spacecraft game.  Pretty tough though.

I also had great fun with Centurion.  Seducing Cleopatra baby

I liked Mean Streets, but I never beat it.  I got to the end, with all these special colored keycards but I couldn't shuffle them around in time.

Good memories.

Death Track - probably the only racing game that I really loved. Not only do you drive some weird car it is also loaded with tons of different weapons!

To add on top of that - this is one of the few games that did not have a sequel even though you'd think it definitely would have one

And of course the legendary...
PRINCE OF PERSIA - I don't think I need to say anything about this one, the name says it all - the first prince of persia game.

hey, man, btw, I have a question that was troubling me for almost 20 years, lol. I've passed the entire game up to mid-level 12 in about 30 mins, but I've NEVER went past the mirror image (or is it supposed to be his soul?). I used a cheat code to get to Jafar (he was a joke!!!). Btw, the princess level was complex too!!! Have you managed to pass that one?

Oh, also, try Goblins sequels It had 1,2 and 3. Oh, and also if you liked that you may also want to try a Russian game called "Petka and Vasili Ivanich spasajut galaktiku"

Ha, I have Gobliins (2). It took me a while to get the sound configured right, but I eventually managed to play it. The game is unique because you have to thoroughly explore and experiment with the game environments to progress. You gotta use items together in order to accomplish a goal, and sometimes you need to command your characters to work together to make something happen. Like you said, it's hilarious watching the Gobliins do things and occasionally get beaten up. Luckily, they can put up with a hell of a lot of punishment!

It's a well-known problem from Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness, where the script for one game scene gets executed waaaay too quickly thanks to the fast CPU speed. MoSlo and CPUkiller don't usually work for it, but DOSbox is supposed to. Also, somebody made a patch that finally did away with the problem for good. Unfortunately, it's one of those cases where you have to start the game from scratch because the patches render your saved games incompatible. So I gotta play the series over again.

But damn it, DOS games kick major butt.

Does anybody ever remember Monster Bash or Mystic Towers?  A couple of delightful little games that were astonishingly immersive.

In Monster Bash you were a little kid that had to rescue all the pets of the world that had been kidnapped to turn into a zombie army.  All you had was a slingshot and the ability to jump.

Mystic Towers was basically a dungeon crawl (only through a tower)
with all kinds of bizarrely cute creatures and amusing sound effects.

You can still buy them from Apogee I think.

FriendofGunnar, thank god you mentioned those dude, and yes I have played both of them.

Wasn't mystic tower's where you played with some old dude, and it was kinda like a puzzle game, but not really, you know what I mean.

And Monster Bash is pretty cool, didn't have the full version but I still had fun nonetheless.

Does anyone remember Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure?

A 2D Side Scrolling game, where you controlled a green alien that had suction caps for hands

That was a good and enjoyable game.

Well that is lucky for you Russ, very lucky, because when I try and play crusader: No Remorse and Crusader: No Regret, it lags like you wouldn't believe.

The lag is even worse then Battle.net lag, it is soo bad.

I have to wait about 1 minute or more before my character actually shoots a gun or walks or runs, or does anything.

I really miss that game, alot, was one of the very first games that I played the most, well that game i probably have played the most.
