I am getting so mad...

Well I have a free day today. I don’t have to go to school, and that is great. I knew they would have some meting, but I could not suspect this.

Ten minutes ago I heard the postman delivering some letters in the letterbox in the front of my house. There were three of them, one from the bank, one from the archive where my dad work and one from my school to me. I suspected that it would be complaints about me and my buddies sending letters to each other on the lessons, but no it was something much more horrible.

The letter contained two papers with some diagrams about the economy about my school. I know that it wasn't exactly great, I had already heard that many students have left. Much uninteresting chatter. But in the end, it was something that made me very pissed off.

(Translated from Swedish)"... We are now very sorry to inform you that our beloved school is going to declare itself bankruptcy. It is not only a cause of great harm for you, but also for us who have worked for the future of our school..."

No, I like the US. I have been in NY and in LA many thimes. The thing is that I didn't expect such things to happen in a welfare-state such as Sweden...

I'm shocked beyond belief myself. First of all, where in Sweden are you? I'm from Norbotten, and we have had problems with my school as well in terms of money, but never as far as bankruptcy.

I'm really sorry, I'm very surprised, because after I've been living in the US and have been attending a Michigan school, I see a big difference in the way they use their money and the surrounding economy. It's a little ironic, because my current school is having loads of trouble with money while the other schools 20 minutes north are building new schools. It's strange, but I somewhat agree with you that it's odd when Swedish schools are going under like that. Not to be discriminant against US schools, but I would expect US schools to be going bankrupt before the Swedish schools, no offense.

Well that depends where you're talkling about. I live in Palo Alto, California and I don't think a school has gone bankrupt in the last 100 years or so (no kidding). The schools here are great, and I think that the schools in cities close to us have great schools too (except East Palo Alto).

Hi fellow countryman!

My school lies in Stockholm, near Centralstationen. It is a "Waldorf" school so we have organic (and not that good) food and a bit special education (like we have to write books about what we have learnt). About a year ago the school seemed to have financial troubles. The Council (Kansli) tried to reduce the expenses, but they didn't seem to succeed in this. Because of that the teachers disbanded the Council and introduced a new system where every teacher should have the same power. Some students left because of the new financial restrictions (cheaper food, no place for chemistry and such). The School inspection where here and criticised them for that, and for having unclean premises and taking way to high prices for study trips (my parents had to pay 6000 kr. for one week on Iceland. 6000!). Some of the poorer student’s couldn't afford that.

They where quiet about the budget for a moment, until in October when they hold a meeting with the parents where they declared a total purchase-stop. They promised that they where sure about that they could turn the tilde. However, the students continued to leave.  When this springperiod, My class (7) drooped from 20 to 14 students. Many of my friends left. In the letter I got (it was accualy for my parents, but I where too curious too keep my fingers of) they told us that they where only 107 students left. They had hired an economical advisor who told them too buy new premises in cheaper area’s to avoid the high rent, but it seems like there is no money left for that.

This feels so strange. Like my big brother Zeth (Fortres_fan) said, a welfare state like Sweden should have contributions to counter things like this. I think the answer is that the kolegium is full of idiots.

Anyway, how is it in Norrbotten? If it is true that the population is dropping, it can't be easy to manage a school there.

Well, I don't know Swedish schools, but I know my American school, and it sucks. I mean, not only does it barely have any money, but it misuses the money it does have. For example, after last year, they threw away some lockers that were in sort of bad condition (but still quite usable). They didn't buy enough new ones. Not only that, but they bought a display case. Another problem is not enough teachers. I looked in an old yearbook, and we had some really wierd and obscure classes back then, and teachers to teach them. Now we have less classes, and idiots teaching them.

Is your school a private one? I.e. is it an independent school or is it owned by the state?
In Denmark private schools receive economic support by the state. I have never heard about a school declaring bankruptcy in Denmark. They might decide to close schools in small towns because of decreasing population or just move the higher grades to nearby schools, but bankruptcy! I nearly fell down from my chair when I read that you were from Sweden; that was one of the last countries I had expected something like that to happen.

Hi Nordic brother! Good to see so many Nordmä(ae)n here.

Yes it is a private school (like all Waldorf schools). I was actually petty shocked when I first heard rumours about the economy leading to bankruptcy. I didn't even know that it was possible.

My mother told me that she have heard that the kolegium had forget to seek contributions for after-school care. I wonder if the biggest fault was having no principal and a flat organisation (how can that even be legal?). And yes, if Sweden is supposed to be a welfare state, shouldn't it exist more anti-bankruptcy contributions?

Darn… my friends and my teachers… gone.

I see now that a Waldorf schools is what we in Denmark call a (Rudolf) Steiner school. They receive support from the state. 75% if I'm not mistaken. I guess the authorities would interfer if something like that happened in Denmark. It's their problem anyway if the school is forced to close; they'll have to find room for the pupils in other schools.
