Qd's strategy on Inferno campaign mission 1: The betrayal

I only tried this scenario once so it's probably not be the
optimal strategy but it worked for me. I really liked
this scenario, it was fun, it was clever and I don't
remember being pursued like this in a heroes game (but
then again I probably forget). Big kudos to the
scenario designer whoever it might be.

1) I suggest taking the 3 hell chargers as your
starting bonus. You already have enough hell hounds
when you start.

2) The first thing that should be done is splitting
your imps into 3 equal stacks. That way, you can gate
in more free reinforcements (read sacrificial goats)
to block 3 shooter stacks instead of just one...
Throughout the inferno scenarios, try to fill out your
empty slots with imps. (Note concerning patch 1.4: when a gated or
summoned (Phantom force) stack gets completely destroyed, the game
tends to crash. I've seen it happen with imps, hell hounds and
griffins)

3) Your first battle will be with monks. To avoid
losses, besides gating in imps next to monks, please
wait with your cerberus and chargers (you might have
to wait more than once) until the monks have had their
turn. Why? Because the monks do half damage when their
shots have to go more than half the field distance.
Timing is everything. If the monks wait, wait also
with your cerberus and chargers.

4) Another trickier but better way to handle shooters
with your cerberus and chargers is to move those units
a few steps to the right, just beyond the half
distance range of the monks, instead of waiting. Done
well, the quick cerberus and chargers can reach the
shooters on their second turn. You also have a chance
of gaining a morale boost if you move instead of
waiting.

5) Take the boots to your east. Anything that boosts
your land movement is important. That includes taking
the logistics secondary skill when it's offered to
you. It's one of the best secondary skills in my
humble opinion and it's been so since Heroes 2.

6) The second secondary skill you should take when
offered would be gating. That skill permits you to
gate in other higher-level troops besides imps. The
stronger the level of the skill, the higher the
inferno creature that can use gate. Improving your
gating will make later battles easier.

7) Choose also pathfinding and swift gating when it's
offered to you when you level up.

8) Go south on the road, take the left fork (west) and
visit the redwood observatory. Don't forget to visit
the hut of the magi along the way.

9) 36 horned demons joined me for greater glory and
then 61 familiars. This makes me wonder if most of the
inferno troops in this map are likely to join.

10) I strongly suggest entering sanctuary when Godric is
near the redwood observatory. Then on the next day
rush east. Cerberus will join you when you attack
them.

11) Do not pick up everything on the ground or visit all
structures. Godric pursues you closely and you'll
notice that whatever you leave, he will take, in
effect delaying him.

12) Go towards the eastern sanctuary (visible though the
eye of the magi). If an enemy hero comes along (not
Godric), it's possible to beat him using good tactics
such as: letting the enemy come to you, fireballing
clumps of units, casting Mark of the Damned often
(whenever the stack it was cast on is destroyed),
concentrating on eliminating the griffins first and
gating in sacrificial imp units.

13) You can only have one Mark of the Damned active at a
time.

14) I learned much later that it's perhaps better to
avoid that particular battle (by ending the turn in
that area inside the sanctuary), the troops you lose
would be more useful later.

15) Go south and visit the red keymaster tent. Take the
monolith and you will find yourself close to the red
gate that leads to the underground where you must go.

16) You shall be pursued by Godric. Try to avoid golden
temptations if they're too much out of your way.

17) Do visit every inferno creature generator and hire
every unit you can to boost your army.

18) Avoid the fire elementals. They inflict too many
casualties.

19) Once you go back to the surface, you'll be attacked
by a fellow inferno hero. This is the final battle and
it can be quite difficult if you've lost too many
troops along the way.

20) Gate in new troops with every unit that can on their
first turns (except the pit lord who should cast
meteor shower while the enemy troops are clumped
together). Let the enemy come to you. Don't rush to
the other side with your cerberus/hell hounds.

21) Concentrate your attacks on the familiars and the
hell hounds at first.  Try to use your own cerberus so
that they hit 2 stacks whenever they can.

22) Avoid attacking the enemy succubus with your own
unless you have more units of that type than the
enemy.

23) Use the vorpal sword (kills at least one unit in
*any* stack) of the pit lord on the enemy devil if it
gets close.

Finished on normal difficulty in month 1, week 2, day
7.

Please, do not spam the forum with new threads about strategy guides for every single campaign missions - or even a selection of those. I appreciate the thought of helping other out, but there are already threads for discussing campaign strategies. If you really need to make a new thread about your strategies (which I still think is overkill) make one thread with all your strategies. This forum is being drowned in an enourmous amount of new threads that could easily be less.

Not to mention he's playing on Normal. Do you even need strategy on Normal?

Yes.

There are plenty of missions where your forces are vastly outnumbered and losing a main hero (or secondary) causes you to lose a mission.

I'm having a very tough time beating campaign 6 mission 2 on normal.  I just never have enough forces to take the northern castle.
