Ballista- something not to be trifled with

I just lost this 1 VS 1 match on Disrupted Island.
I chose Inferno and Nebiros; he took Vittorio and Haven.

And I lost. Why? He's ballista was overwhelmingly powerful.
His creatures were not a threat at all.
Even with his high level (22) and stats( att:24, def:14....)
versus my level 14 character with stats(att:18, def:3....),
I found killing his creatures a breeze.

But the ballista turned the tide of the battle. It easily wiped out all my creatures although I was having no problem at all with his creatures.

So, moral of the story, destroy the ballista FIRST... (at least that's what I've learnt...)

Well, Vittorio's ballistae speciality adds +1 attack to his ballistae every lvl, ie at lvl 22, he would have 15+22 = 37 attack skill on his ballistae.  Add in a triple blllistae ability, and you can only imagine the dmg he can cause

Against war machines specialists (like Deleb, Vittorio), their power ratings in my eyes are normally quite high

Well, nevermind, I fought yet another haven opponent online and won him easily (he chose Irina) so I'm feeling better again...

War Machines (tent and ballista) give enormous advantage at the beginning. No losses, all mines taken and later with Guardian Angel (resurrects 240 + 30Hero Level) it's getting really ridiculous because you want your stack completely dead in order to resurrect it completely and then use tent shots if necessary.

I don't know exactly how it is computed but AI often blocks shooting units and attack the tent. Oh well.. it is probably scared of a retaliation.

fine, never tested it

Machines give advantage? I'd say they help not to get stuck with creeping early. Frankly, the best creeping strats (like the MotN+vamps and the infamous MMR) don't use machines at all, so I don't see why they are considered too strong.

Well there is Havez! I hadn't considered it but the knowledge bonus from enlightenment, artifacts and high lvl he can get really buff the ballista's stats. BUT he'd have to drop a magic school or sorcery.

Havez? Best to avoid him. Seriously. If you dislike the MMR the way I do, there is still a way to creep easily without tent.. M.Gremlins draw a lot of attention so the archmages are safe from enemy fire all the times, and obsidian gargs are great tanks and can't be ressurected anyway, so in most cases the tent is a waste here. You can do well without it even without the MMR.

Sylvan, on the other hand, could REALLY become godly if a hero with warmachines was available from the start.

Nature's indeed invincible with warmachines, trip ballista+imbue arrow+fire arrows and maybe destructive magic (master of ice) = win
(tested it once by editting skills in map editor)

Btw against high level opponents imo fire arrows is better then vittorio's specialty. At lvl20 vittorio adds +20 att but havez with fire   arrows would, against lvl7 units negate like 30+ def.

Nur with Resurrection is easily the best creeping hero. It's really nice of her that even if she loses almost the whole army she still can resurrect EVERYTHING (that lives of course) as long as there is option to blind or run away from the remaining stack. So, the trick is to kill all but one creature and delay its death until everything is resurrected:
1 remaining slow creature: can be lead around battlefield by a fast stack
1 remaining shooter: will shot until it runs out of shots
1 remaining no retaliation troop: can't be killed by retaliation
Nice spells to use: endurance, deflect missile, haste, slow

So, generally speaking Resurrection + Blind give unlimited Resurrection

I'm not a huge fan of the ballista:

- I never pick war machines and therefore never have control. If you cast Blind on a creature you may risk to "wake" it again with a ballista shot.
- Goes very bad with armageddon.

Me neither unless a few times with the dwarves. If you are to go the warmachines route you start with a hero specialized in them as Vittorio, Deleb and to a (much) lesser extent Havez. Don't be fooled his ballista damage is fine, especially with flaming arrows and had even helped me once get a town with castle in endgame but it's generally better not to focus your levels on it. I would also be tempted if I got it within the first 5 lvls with a ranger if only for the fun of it!
AND if you get them, luck is your best bet!

Spoiler

I had one unpleasant experience with ballistas though. In the Hof campaing, the red guys (Andreas, Lorenzo and company) have triple ballista and do irritating amounts of damage. I lost 75 marksmen each time it fired.
-End of Spoiler-

But in the end, it's not good enough for me. Actually it is irritating when the game has made a randomized hero for me and he/she has got War machines as one of their skills.

Interesting stuff (about the ballista).  I typically only play Heroes on the weekend and only check HC during the week.  This weekend I've been playing around with new Haven strategies and Heroes, mostly Vittorio.  The Haven can stuggle some with early creeping and Expert War Machines + Tent + Triple Ballista helps a lot.  I've traditionally been against War Machines because one good area spell can destroy them all and then bye-bye 6 levels of skills.  However early game success often leads to late game victory.  Also It's nice for taken down walls and torrents on castle sieges.  Finally with the creeping boost from War Machine stuff it's easier to split the troops and expand with two heroes in different directions.  Without War Machines Haven doesn't have another way of doing any significant extra damage in battle.  (By extra I mean in addition to troops, like summoning or damage spells).  I think that probably overall it is a slight liability in the end but the boost is gives you in the beginning is worth it.

Yes but luck and morale seriously affect the rate by which you do damage. Of course it's not as secure as warmachines in the beginning though I will prefer it with most heroes. Also there's this lovely ability divine guidance that can help you hit fast right after you've taken a retaliation and before your opponent gets to play again.
