Poll Question:
Haste spell

There may already be a poll about this, but anyways:

Which one do you think is better: the H3/4 haste (raises speed) or H5 haste (raises initiative). My personal opinion is the speed raiser haste.  How about you?

Responses:
H3 and H4 haste
H5 haste
I hate them both

Initiative all the way.. speed isn't that critical, because it won't help you much when you need to attack adjacent enemy

Well, actually in H3 there was no initiative, only speed that counted as both. So I vote for the H3 version (not the H3/H4 version).

its a crazy comparsion.... the "H3 haste" increased "initiative" and speed, but it didn't make your troops act more times, just that their turn comes faster !

Initiative is good but just check the rune of charge. Sometimes you can end a battle before it begins and it doesn't show that much with the dwarves because their damage output is low. Imagine haven with cavaliers angels and squires getting across in the first round with luck, retribution and leadership...Naturally that's good enough with initiative but factions with weak defense(dungeon) or units(academy) could be massacred in this one round.

It's not a matter of which is best.

The proper question is: Why didn't they make both spells?

Haste: Increases Initiative.
Speed: Increases Speed.

Duh!

I think Elvin already anwered your question.

In Heroes 3, Slow and Haste were gamebraking spells. I am relieved they didn't introduce them again.

Well, then that raises another question: Whoever said there had to be only to spells per school per level?

Haste is no longer what it used to be... I like this new system, but it leaves slow creatures behind which is bad.. But well haste is haste, how ever it works

At first it took me some time to get used to it but I don't mind it's still a great spell. Greater in some cases as when you surround a slow tank and everybody starts hitting!

It makes more sense if it increases initiative.
Haste makes you faster so you act more often, not make it so you can move farther. But it could also possibly increase both, that would make sense too.

Well you still move further anyway because you get to act more often, and if you've already reached them then mass haste = +40% damage... So H5 haste is better imo, because in effect it still does everything H3 haste did and more.

Totally agreed with this. Increase Initiative is better than Speed.

It was good in H3 because it raises speed and in H3 speed was speed and initiative. But the bad thing is that you aren't able to act twice or more a round. It's different in H5 it doesn't increases speed which is a pity for me sometimes, but you can act multiple times a round... don't know which to choose

Bad comparison.

As explained, in H3 speed as well determined when a creature was to act, so in some sense, it as well raised initiative, even though no creature moved more than others.

That aside the difference was more clear and directly noticable in H3. In H5, whenever you use haste, it doesn't affect the creatures about to take their turn, it only affects the long run.

And I agree with Alcibiades. A more proper question would be why they didn't add both spells to H5.

Many creatures has deasent speed alright but lacks in initiative (tough i don't understand how can Vindicators have so low speed!) But thing about H3 Mass Haste spell in Rangers hand. All creatures could attack in the first turn, even the Treants could walk the whole battlefield (they have pretty good Speed of 6 but maybe thats reasonable when they are so big).

Now would you really want that kinda spell in the game? Air and Earth where superior schools in H3 and i think Light is now "balanced" atleast Destruction and Summon is very much selectable and we would not want to change that whit some lv1 spell.

H4 Haste was different, there was moment along whit speed so i doubt that are any good combarison. Mayby there could be old H3 style Hastle/Slow spells if the battle grip would be bit bigger, now it would be too much of an advantage on the first turn(s). Of course Initiative boost is better in the long run but what it mathers when the battle could be determined in the first turn if you have those old Slow/Haste spells. So i vote for H5 Haste it makes battles more fun
