Favorite AI moments

I was playing Easy difficulty trying to defeat the Cultist (Inferno) mission #4 - The Ship. I had finally taken both the first Sylvan city and the Inferno one. While building up an army and taking my main hero topside to clear resources, the green hero caught me unaware once and started for my inferno location. His large army was more than my defenders would have been able to handle. He even took my mines on his way to besiege me.

Fortunately for me, the week ended and a new one began before he could reach me. My town had been building up and immediately popped up a hireable army. I bought all the creatures and the green hero turned tail and ran away. I laughed out loud for awhile at that.

Hoorah instant-army!

Any tales to share?

I was playing Subterranean Treasures (still am.  1st time on the map) and I was not doing well, IMO.  I was watching enemy ships (saw maybe 6 go by my region) go by on the water while I was still getting all resources from the Dungeons and just THEN got powerful enough to destroy the last LARGE neutral army.  I was quite behind.  I believe I was not aggressive enough and was too caught up in flagging resources.  The resources are spread out pretty far over the land and dungeon.

SO i finally bought a boat.

I sent my hero that i found as a prisoner out (since I had no allied cities to supply him with armies) to see if there are any chests and other profitable flotsam left.  Of course there were.  Probably all free sea resources were still there for me to pick up.  I scored probably 20K gold, 90 wood and some misc crap before one of the enemy ships owned my useless ex-prisoner hero.

So, augmented by the gold i found, I loaded up my primary army, bought a new boat and went visitting a neighbor.  It was a series of  tough battles, but I flagged 1/2 to 3/4 of the resources and took one city (out of 2) of a adjacent region (FYI there are 4 regions each with 2 cities and one underground dungeon, each unapproachable to the other except by sea) taking pretty tough losses.  So I got back on my boat and with this pillage taking about 2 weeks, I was able to recruit a respectable army (but still not AS strong as a typical enemy army) of creatures sitting in 2 cities.  As I went home they took the newly conquerred city back.

So I immediately moved on to my next neighborring region unsuccessfully and retreated home to rebuild.

YAY.  Nearly all resources I flagged were still mine even tho i watched enemy heroes walking by MANY of my mines without stopping.  I think he took back a wood mill.  How clever.

Silly AI.

I am just now at this point but I have become rich as a result of those losses and I am likely going to take BOTH cities in the same region tonite or tomorrow.  This AM I sailed over and beat one quite superior army (that is a "Silly AI tale of it's own were i to remember it) and was jumped by 2 insignificant armies (Silly AI) and it looks like I should capture 2 cities in a week.

But DAMN if I play hard or heroic I am just so castrated early on that I have a real tough time accomplishing ANYthing.

AI is indeed stupid.

BUT, on heroic, it can be a nice training for inexperienced players before the multiplayer mode. If you can rape the machine early - or at least defend yourself untill you can gather the needed units - you can start the MP without worrying about being f*cked up every game in 1st month

i had played "hard" my 3rd or 4th time (had a week off where i played 4 hr / day) on the map "Warlords" and won because I had unfailing future sense.

ie.  i played the map a few times and knew where the good stuff was and where the key crossroads were.

On one of the dungeon campaign maps AI attacked one of my cities with a very respectable army (something like 35 deep hydras, 18 or so shadow witches, 50 assasins, 34 dark raiders, 50 minotaurs, and 60 blood furies....numbers not exact but close) and the defending hero in the city had only 24 minotaur guards and one assassin. I split the minotaur guards into 6 stacks of 4 and proceeded onto battle. AI instead of applying direct damage to my defending army via spells kept casting stat reducing spells on my units while my castle shooters and my hero slowly destroyed AI's entire army. Both heroes were around 20th level so my spells were very sufficient to cripple the attackers army but they could have easily destroyed me quickly. I won that battle with 1 minotaur left

7 or so AI controlled wraiths vs 20-30 low level melee (possibly blood furies or wardancers)

HARM TOUCH!

Another favorite was beating a signigiantly larger army using spamming raise dead.

I hate it if AI loses his best hero in mid-game and spends rest of weeks sitting in his castle, waiting for someone to come.. this happens alot and on hard mode.. gonna switch to heroic from this time on, hard was fun on first maps now its also stupid sometimes bc of AI..

another thing is that AI never kills big mobs guarding important resources or artifacts..my 2nd hero gets alot of stuff to kill after i conquer a new town../boggle

AI doesn't need mines, since it starts with 200 of each resource, or smth like that.

I posted this elsewhere, but I guess it fits quite well in here too.

There was one battle in which a stack of 150+ Horned Overseers decided to explode itself (while surrounded by its own units and ONLY its own units) for no apparent reason.

*lol* That's a good one!

The only really stupid thing I've experienced was in the Necromancer single scenario where one of the nasty wizard armies sailed for my Inferno castle, then got out of the boat, and the re-entered it and sat there for the next 5 rounds or so allowing me to come back and defend the castle.

That was just plain Nice.

So in answer to the thread "Are Necromancers Evil?" I would have to say no on account of the above.

yeah, I seen that in a town seige before

on a similar note, I recall one battle where I had moved some minotars right up into the face of a small stack of shadow dragons.  The enemy hero targeted my minotars with circle of winter.  Needless to say, I didn't have to deal with those dragons any more.

I was playing the last Haven map, Fall of the King, and the AI took over some of my mines.  The wierd thing was, it didn't go and take back one of its' mines.  I was thinking, "Is the AI blind?"

200 of each resource, and 100,000-300,000 gold, depending on difficulty level and map.

1. The AI has cast Armageddon with a Warlock, damaging itself severely and killing my scout hero consisting of one Hydra.

2. The AI runs into moats when the castle door is gaping wide open (has been said before).

3. The AI attacks your general with an end-game army with a half-baked hero.

4. The AI casts spells with units when shooting/attacking would do thrice as much damage (Archliches, Archmages, Elder Druids, Shadow Matriarchs, Sprites, Titans).

4. The AI (even for you) during castle seiges makes the towers shoot seemingly random targets.

5. The AI takes priority of non-lethal summoned units over real ones.

The AI is a disgrace on this game.

Here's a favorite AI moment: the AI decides that I'm getting too powerful, and sends two heroes at once!  Not good.

Ive seen this 3 or 4 times. Each time it just cracked me up

Most times I saw it was in the Dungeon campaign maps and one time the AI exploded half its stack of succubi with a stack of about 200 demons.

I had a nice one today. Using a secondary hero to intercept a hero that had landed 3 days travel from me, the AI used Instant Travel to pass a mountain barrier with another of his heroes and he attacked my secondary hero. I had like 2-3 weeks worth of Inferno troops (I recall about 140 Imps, 120 Horned Demons, 60 Cerberi, 27 Succubi, 16 Hell Chargers, 17 Pit Lords and 3 Devils ... well, everything was upgraded on my army except the Devils).

His army consisted of Master Gremlins (close to 200), Druids (about 50 or so), Marksmen (I think about 90), Conscripts (about 200), Squires (around 60) and about 150 Sprites. My Hero was only level 5 or so, his Hero was a bunch of levels higher.

His line-up was to group the three shooters next to eachother on the rear line in the corner, with the three melee types in front of them. The enemy Hero first cloned his Sprites and when they had died, his Druids ... Needless to say, my Pit Lords needed just two fireballs to slaughter just about his entire army

It was my first time playing the map, and we all had a pretty sizeable army. I was wandering around with my army when the AI shows up with his on a boat a single move from my home castle! In a panic I rush back but can't make it on time.

Okay, enemy turns around and gets back on the boat.
I chuckle and wait a turn, and the boat runs away.
I take one turn to go back to what I was doing.
The AI runs back with the boat and lands on my shores again.
I run back, the AI runs away, I walk away, the AI dashes back.
This went on for two weeks before I had a big enough army to both explore AND guard

lol that's real stupid. AI is afraid but why doesnt it just not come back to ur area? Does he think that u'll become interested in a tree on the other side of ur base? does  he think u'll suddenly find a clue to the tear of asha and want to get it? does he think an angel will suddenly come down and give u a tear?

At one point, I can't remember what map, the Enemy hero brought a big army through a garrison near my castle and I'm like "Oh ****!" because my castle was unguarded, I was 3 days away, and it was middle of the week.  Anyway, the enemy passed through the garrison, and dropped off an army of griffins to defend, then passed through.  Upon getting through, he realized that his army was now too week, so he ran back through the garrison to his castle, grabbing the griffins as he went.  This made his army strong enough, so he raced back through, leaving the griffins again.

This repeated for about three weeks unitl I had a big enough army and took pitty on the poor guy, and killed him.
