New Players

Over the last couple weeks, I have seen alot of new players coming in and out of the toh chatroom.  Most are directed to the thread here with the msn info.

However, I see alot saying things like "no game again" or "How can I play clans if I can't even get 4 games on record" or "Hello, hello, hello.. why doesn't anyone answer."

I realize that for the most part its because people are away from their comps or they are in games.  But I am sure that you and everyone else knows it is difficult to find games at times.  And I am afraid that newer players are coming in attempting to give toh and multiplayer a shot and are being turned off by the lack of a social structure and in general being ignored by many players.

1 new player today may suck.. and the game might not be very challenging but within a few matchs, if they recieve some tips and help and most importantly the opportunity to play a game, well they will come back tommorow.  And they might even be a little better tommorow, then in a few  weeks they might stomp you.

Anyway the morale of this story is that activity is not super in H5.  Sure there is a fair number of games going on, but its not like one says.. "I think I'll go play a game of H5 today" its more like "hmmmmm I wonder if I can find a game today /sigh".
Don't get so hooked up on playing a clans or being worried that this uber noob might just steal 80 points from you.. cause the extra players can only help.

So I think everyone should try and give these newer players a game or two here and there.  If your not playing someone else, why not?  We need to try a spur activity and keep the games coming.

Anyway thats all.

I agree.. and if I was playing, I'd rather play the new players who come in, try to get them to rack up a few wins/losses.  About half my games were with players who wandered in the chatroom.  Since I see the chat logs, I see about a dozen random new people log in and out as destro says.

I think there should be a guide for beginners sticked somewhere in the forum. The guide should explain all this what desto said and some other tips on how to get more games. I can give few:

1)Install msn communicator

2) Add ALL contacts from the list that is available in "meeting players" topic. Its essential to add all of them. Most of them doesn't play anymore do don't be discouraged if you add people that are not available at all, if you add all you wont miss people that still play.

3) When you add a contact , that person gets the info that you added him and most often adds you too. Therefore they will see you in their msn. You can use your info note to help you finding a game. Write in there that you are looking for a toh game.

4) Dont use random names, as a msn name use your toh nick.

5) When you see that somebody is looking for a game (because his info says so) you can ask him if you can play with him, you may try to ask people that are available even if they don't have the info but keep in mind that they may be busy and may not reply or might not have time to talk/play so don't push them.

6) its difficult to find a game via chatroom, if you are really interested in games , use msn

7) Nearly all toh players use hamachi network so make sure you have it before you start looking for a game

8)Some people want clan games only so as soon as you get 3 games and become a footman try to get into a clan, it will help you find a game (even if you are not interested in clans)

Ingame tips

1)Remember that people play better than computers so its strongly advised to learn to win vs comp before going multilayer(unless you play with people at your lvl)

2) Its good idea to learn to kill neutral monsters in single player game so if you have difficulties with this do some games vs comp. Even if you think you know that , you are wrong, i have been playing this game for a year now and i still learn how to do it.

3) Make sure you know the map you are going to play on, unless its blind map for both players , this factor makes huge difference.

I think that are most basic things that help finding a game. Basically its not that hard to get a game. Its more difficult before and early afternoon and easier in the evening. But there is almost always a game in progress so if you are searching active enough you should find one within an hour.

Being new to ToH, I can give some advice to the other new people.  Take any game you're offered.  I know I'm playing people with more experience.  I know I'm playing a tournament map that I've never played before and my opponent probably knows it well.  If you're new you can't be afraid to lose... that's how we learn.

ps.  I'm on msn almost every Friday looking for games.

Hey,

- Just got to hurl a 2 cent's into the ring here

Quote:
And I am afraid that newer players are coming in attempting to give toh and multiplayer a shot and are being turned off by the lack of a social structure and in general being ignored by many players.

- That is a very subjective statement there, Destro23. Of course I am taking this out of context but still, it's a harsh way to judge all players ( and as I read it, ppl in general ) There are several ways to reach an opponant.Hamachi,Msn,ToH Chat room..etc.( this etc. IS limited I know, but still )  Need I list the various sub-tournaments ( Dont make me with a ; Please do! Remark ). Agreed, some players only plays certain tournaments ( their loss,- So to speak ) But many ( not alot ) Do, and have always, played a variety of  games, be it tournament(s) or not takeing challenges from all over. Hence, I do think your remark ( taken out of context or not ) is a bit harsh, overall.

- When Vesuvius fired up this chatroom, I specifically remember him/her telling us to log in and stay there - To attract ppl in general I guess. With me so far ?

- Of course we all have ppl we like to play more than others..no need to go into this. So if ( taking me as an example, I log in and see that "none" is online.....I log out 10 seconds later. I dont see anything wrong in doing that...still with me ?
If xxx logs in, be it a "known name " or not ...looking for a mate or whatnot and logs out xx seconds later..thats fine with me.

And if New Players logs in to have a blast...well who are we kidding..."Hi, I am new, where do I start playing online ? "

- Well .....

1) They found ToH ( and thats a good thing )
2) They obviously know a bit about online gaming ( who said WoW and wow ? )
3) No-one can expect to have the 5 star treatment the first time they log on ( unless it's ..well you or Mr./Mrs./Miss. xx ) now can they ?
4) And if they can't , they should use their homm-cell's and think back to when they were new in an online game. I know I did...Maybe I should stop "hi" - "hi" - "hi" --should I maybe ask what to do before I can even play online ..up those lines..still with me ?
5) Probably both a sixth and a seventh in this epic crap lame post..but that, I leave to the community

- Anyhooos :

Don't get so hooked up on playing a clans or being worried that this uber noob might just steal 80 points from you.. cause the extra players can only help.

Well, actually, I disagree. I don't like to play complete newcomers because every game is a serious investment of time and I don't like the idea of playing for 5 hours (or more) only to find out that my opponent does not present any challenge to me.
Sure, I always try to help the new guys, I'm happy to give hints how to start, how to find a game etc. but I simply refuse to play complete strangers who I know nothing about.

The problem usually faced is forced into playing heroic and time limit, not to mention a blind map.
As most of us are used to hard/no time limit, time limit kind of restricts what we can do in given time. And also difference races will need different time to creep.
Maybe need to accept hard/no time limit as the usual standard, its easier to find games.

Heroic versus necro from opponent is another sick thing to see

I have no problem playing newbies if i have the time, and not afraid of losing 80 points to them, but seems some are worried about losing 0-1 point to us by trying to make strange rules which i encountered sometimes

But recently, all the new players are very good and will pose a serious challenge in no time provided they do not give up

Good example is the powerplay clan, all 3 are pretty new to toh 2-3 months ago, but in just 2-3 months time, all of them are legionaires and clan destroyers

Yes i dont like too when somebody new tries to enforce rules different we use in our toh games.

I remember myself, when i was starting, i enjoyed timed games since i like to have rather many games instead one long .. but back then it was so much different. I simply wasn't good enough to spend that much time creeping. I had 1 or at most 2 fights per day and now i can have 4-5. It was my playing skills improvement that made me to stop timed games. Of course i can play timed games now but this would require specific factions and strategies because its not the same as normal game for me anymore. Id like to notice that there are separate tournaments for players who play with time limits.

Playing heroic difficulty is another thing. It used to support necro , perhaps it still does. Anyway, it changes number of creeps and therefore creeping strategies and you have to think hard in order not to make mistake if you are not used to this difficulty. People that think that this difficulty require more skills are wrong. Its just draws out the creeping period and require some practice, which most of toh players don't have since we play hard all the time, so its not fair to ask for a game on this difficulty

I don't mind playing "heroic" for a change. Time limits are ok against new players too - so the game won't last for long. And if it's small map - just perfect. Played some games like that and in 1-2 hours the games were finished.
But that is the worst part about playing with new players - when the game is finished, all i get is a one more win for the statistics (or one more loss, eventually). Ok, 1-2 hours are not that much time. But the games were nothing special - no fun, no intrigue, just a training angainst weaker opponent (most of the time). And no reward for me at all. I'm receiving 0 points for the ratings. I had no real challenge. So what's the point for me to play games against new players ?
I mean - i'm a greedy person. When i'm helping the newbies to become footmen i want at least some small bonus for the time spent in educating them ("educating" = "butchering", you know). It would be nice if there's a minimum bonus points for a win agains opponent - even if he has far lower rating - something like 2-3-4 points, not 0, as it's now.
IMO, this will make killing newbies more interesting

Well i thought it wasn't nice to say that... When you are a newbie yourself 2-3 months ago... And if u beat some of the top players who get almost 0 points against u, how do u say that?
Its just a cycle...

Putting some standards on the main ToH page might not be a bad idea.  I was fortunate to learn about Hamachi and MSN names from the ToH chatroom.  The ToH page itself says to use Ubi's matching software (which almost no tournament players seem to actually use).  I played a couple online games in ubi before joining the tournament and the standard there seems to be setting a time limit (usually 3 minutes).  I have never imposed rules on a tournament player because I didn't know what rule the tournament typically played by but I have had another tournament player give me a long list of rules... don't use there heroes, don't take the town in the middle, heroic, 3 minute turns...  It was annoying but I just figured it was how tournament games were played.  Now I'm learning that all those rules aren't the standard.  If some general concensus of standards were posted on the ToH website, new players like myself wouldn't be so dependent other other players showing us the ropes (and sometimes very different ropes) and could fit in faster.  It would also hopefully reduce the amount of new players trying to impose silly (unnecessary) rules.

Haha i know that player also, but he is new too , don't worry about him . You're right, there were many things annoying about him but i assure you that its not "normal" behavior of toh players.

I hope this topic will be a guide to all newcomers and hopefully will be sticked on the first page so there wont be any doubt what are the habits in toh. Of course everything can be changed if both players agree but at least it would be an information what one can expect.

Ok, I have another question about what is "normal" in tournament rules.  I have only finished a couple games but have started several (often ending quickly due ot bugs).  However in the several start-ups I've had, I've noticed that my opponent often waits for me to select my faction before picking theirs.  Some faction just match up better against some than others.  This seems a little cheap to me though.  I've started just giving myself a random town (I like most of the factions anyways) but it does put me at a disadvantage not deing able to select my hero.  Anyways I was just wondering if their were any norms in the tournament culture about selecting your faction.

You may ask him before you enter the game what is he going to play. Second option is that after you choose your castle in the game then he chooses his than you can change yours again. If he doesn't like it he may change his..etc until you both agree. Ive always got a consensus.

Ive never had problems with that mostly because from some time i was playing dungeon only (which unfortunately triggered that most people i faced was taking academy)

I know jinxer solved that problem with his vista, there is a thread here somewhere where he explained it.
